If you are wandering around Yaowarat and want a cocktail bar with both style and a story, Messenger Service Bar is the place we would drag a friend to right now. In 2025 it landed on Asia's 50 Best Bars for the first time on the extended 51-100 list, and it also walked away with the year's Best Bar Design award after relocating to Baan Trok Tua Ngork, a century-old row of shophouses in Chinatown. The whole concept plays on the idea of an old-fashioned grocery or provisions store. The bar hides behind an ordinary shophouse facade, and only when you head upstairs do you find a room dressed in cherry-wood shelves, terracotta pots, amber glass bottles, and warm rosy lighting that makes you want to settle in for the night.

The drinks menu commits fully to the grocery-store theme. Cocktails are organized like departments in a shop, and the team takes everyday kitchen ingredients and reworks them into glasses you would never expect. There is Calamansi and Jasmine, where floral jasmine meets the sharp citrus of calamansi, and Corn Salad, which blends sweet corn, sweet basil, jalapeno, and paprika into one surprising drink. If you like things creamy, order the Pink Guava and Cream Cheese, and if you are feeling brave, the Parsley and Squid from the seafood aisle is waiting. The bar team leans on fermenting and distilling local ingredients like betel leaf and fermented rice, so the flavors feel familiar and brand new at the same time.

The mood here is quiet enough for real conversation but lively enough to feel like a night out, perfect for slow sipping your way down the menu. Getting there is easier than you might think. Take the MRT to Wat Mangkon station and walk a few minutes, and you are in the same Chinatown bar cluster as Teens of Thailand, G.O.D, and Opium, so a multi-bar night in one neighborhood is very doable.

FAQ

How do I get there, and what is the nearest MRT station?

Take the MRT to Wat Mangkon station and walk a few minutes. The bar sits inside Baan Trok Tua Ngork, a heritage shophouse in Yaowarat, in the same cluster as Teens of Thailand, G.O.D, and Opium.

Do I need to book ahead?

On weekends or busy nights a reservation is a good idea, since the room is intimate and the bar is popular right now. On quieter weeknights you have a decent shot at walking in.

How much is a cocktail?

Prices sit in the good-cocktail-bar range for Bangkok, roughly 400 to 500 baht per drink. Budget for a few, since each glass plays with completely different ingredients.

What is the grocery-store concept, and is the bar hard to find?

The bar riffs on an old-style provisions shop and hides inside a heritage shophouse, with the cocktail menu sorted like grocery departments. The bar itself is upstairs in the building, so just look for the Baan Trok Tua Ngork sign and you will find it.
