Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)
Quiet White Sand on Phangan's North Coast

Bottle Beach, known in Thai as Haad Khuat, is a long stretch of white sand tucked away on the far north coast of Koh Phangan. It's harder to reach than the island's other beaches because no paved road runs to it — you can only get there by longtail boat, on foot, or by 4WD. The payoff is quiet, clear water and the kind of low crowds that are rare on this party island. If you want to escape the noise and read a book on the sand all day, this is the place.

If all you've heard about Koh Phangan is Full Moon parties and Haad Rin, Bottle Beach will change your mind. This is the other side of the island — a long, curved white-sand bay on the far north coast, hemmed in by green hills on two sides. With no road running straight to it, it draws far fewer people than the famous beaches. Everyone who's been there says the same thing: the water really is clear, the sand soft, and the atmosphere genuinely calm.

The Thai name "Haad Khuat" comes from the bay's shape, which curves like the bottom of a bottle — so travellers started calling it Bottle Beach. Its big draw is that it's hard to get to, which turns out to be a good thing: the people who bother to make the trip usually come to relax in peace, not to party. The beach has a handful of bungalows and a few sand-side restaurants, enough to keep you fed all day or stay the night without relying on town.

Where Is Bottle Beach, and Why Is It So Quiet?

Bottle Beach sits on the far north coast of Koh Phangan, east of Chaloklum village and Haad Khom beach. What sets it apart is access: the paved road ends at Haad Khom, and after that it turns into a steep, rough dirt track that ordinary cars and scooters can't handle. That leaves just three ways in — by boat, on foot, or by 4WD.

It's exactly this difficulty that filters out the crowds, so the beach stays quiet. There are only a few bungalow operators, no big convenience store, and no road running along the sand. It suits people who want a genuinely empty day — not those who want ten cafes to choose from.

3 Ways to Reach Bottle Beach

1

Longtail boat from Chaloklum (easiest)

Around ฿150/person/trip · about 15 min · boats run roughly 08:00–17:00

This is what most people choose. Head to Chaloklum pier, look for the Taxi Boat sign, and buy your ticket right there at the front. The ride takes around 15 minutes, with lovely views along the coast. Boats usually leave once they have around 4 passengers or more, so you may have to wait a little in the low season.

2

4WD truck (four-wheel-drive songthaew)

Around ฿150/person/trip · ask the resort or at Chaloklum pier

The resorts on the beach run 4WD songthaews to and from Chaloklum. The track is very steep and rough, and a normal vehicle can't make it. Book ahead with your accommodation or ask at Chaloklum pier. This is the best option if you're in a group or have a lot of luggage.

Jungle hike from the north (for the adventurous)

About 2–2.5 hr (or 40 min from the viewpoint) · free · need to be fit

There are two trails from the end of the road behind Haad Khom: one that hugs the coastal hills (better views) and a shortcut through the jungle (faster). It takes around 2–2.5 hours, and it's steep and hot — wear good grippy trainers and carry plenty of water. The other option is to walk down from the Bottle Beach viewpoint, about 40 minutes, but the climb back up in the sun is exhausting.

Know your return boat

The last longtail boat leaves around 5 pm. If you're visiting on a day trip, confirm the return boat times with the driver as soon as you arrive — don't leave it until evening. If you miss the boat, getting back is difficult, and hiking the trail at night is dangerous.

Clear Water, Swimming and Snorkelling

What many people love about Bottle Beach is the water itself. The sandy bottom slopes down gradually to a comfortable depth, with fewer rocks or coral in the way than at other beaches. The sand is fairly coarse, so it doesn't kick up in the wind. The left side of the beach (looking from the sea toward shore) has fewer underwater rocks and is better for swimming than the right.

  • Snorkelling — the rocky stretches on either side of the bay hold a few fish, and visibility is good when the water is calm. Bring your own mask and snorkel to be safe; a few places on the beach rent gear, but it's not guaranteed.
  • Kayak / SUP — the beach resorts rent boards and kayaks for paddling around the bay, best in the morning while the wind is still light.
  • Sunbathing — the beach is long, with enough shade under the trees along the shore. Arrive early to grab a quiet spot before everyone else.

Sea safety

Bottle Beach faces the open sea to the north, and on some days the waves and currents are strong, especially during the monsoon. Check the water before you go in, don't swim out far on your own, and note that there's no lifeguard here — you're responsible for yourself.

Where to Stay on Bottle Beach

The beach has only a few bungalow operators, all simple and right on the sand rather than luxury resorts. If you want to stay over and catch the morning and evening atmosphere that day-trippers never see, take a look at these options. Prices are rough ranges and swing with the season, climbing sharply in high season and on nights near the Full Moon.

On the beach

Bottle Beach 1 Resort

A long-running beachfront bungalow operator with both budget fan rooms and air-conditioned ones, its own restaurant, and a central spot on the beach — just a few steps to the water.

On the beach

Bottle Beach 2 Bungalows

Also right on the sand with easy access to the water, with a simple island-bungalow feel. Good for anyone who wants to wake up to the sea straight away.

Quiet

Haad Khuad Resort

A good location with clean rooms and a beachfront restaurant. Plenty of reviews praise the quiet and the view — well suited to couples or longer stays.

Budget

Smile Bungalow

Bungalows on the forested slope behind the beach, cheaper than the places right on the water. Good for budget backpackers, and not a long walk down to the sand.

Honest note on room prices

Room prices on Bottle Beach swing hard with the season. In low season, fan rooms start at around ฿500–700, but in high season and on nights near the Full Moon, air-conditioned rooms can climb to ฿1,500 or more. The good beachfront places are few and fill up fast — if you plan to stay over around the Full Moon, book several weeks ahead.

Food and Drinks on the Beach

Bottle Beach has just a few sand-side restaurants, most of them inside the resorts, serving simple Thai and Western dishes — pad thai, fried rice, curries, burgers — plus cold drinks. There's a small minimart on the beach selling snacks and water, though it's not as well stocked as in town. Prices on the beach run a little higher than in Chaloklum, since everything has to be brought in by boat.

  • Bring enough cash — there's no ATM on the beach, and most places take cash only. Withdraw what you need in Chaloklum or in town first.
  • Order lunch with time to spare — the kitchens are small and cook one dish at a time, so it can be a long wait when it's busy. Order a bit ahead to make life easier.
  • There are a few beach bars — in the evening you'll find spots to sip a drink and watch the sunset, with a chilled-out vibe — not the loud party scene of Haad Rin.

Bottle Beach Viewpoint

Above the beach there's a viewpoint that looks down over the whole curved bay of white sand — one of the prettiest photo spots on Koh Phangan. You can ride a scooter up to the parking area at the top (the final stretch is fairly steep) and then walk a little further. If you don't want to head down to the beach but still want the view, this stop is enough on its own — or, if you're fit, carry on down to the beach in about 40 minutes.

Riding the steep roads

The climb to the viewpoint and the roads around the north of the island have steep, slippery sections, especially after rain. If you're not used to a low-powered automatic scooter, don't force it up — walking or taking a transfer is safer. Scooter accidents on the island happen often on steep slopes like these.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for Bottle Beach is the dry season, roughly January to April, when the sea is calm, the water clear, and the boats run regularly. During the late-year monsoon (around October to December), the northern sea can get rough, and on some days the boats don't run because of high waves. If you come in this season, check the weather and ask at the pier first. And if you're avoiding crowds, steer clear of Full Moon party weeks — the whole island gets packed and accommodation prices climb.
