The Lake in the Middle of Khon Kaen

Bueng Kaen Nakhon is a 603-rai lake that sits right in the center of Khon Kaen. It's the city's green lung, the running track for early risers, the park people unwind in at dusk, and a strip of waterfront restaurants that have been going for decades. Khon Kaen is a fast-growing city — new towers, malls, a light-rail line on the way — but right at its center there's still one big lake that hasn't gone anywhere: Bueng Kaen Nakhon, 603 rai of open water with a road wrapping the whole way around. Locals use it at every hour. In the morning they come to run, in the evening they bring the kids to play, walk the dog, or sit down for a meal by the water and watch the sun go down. It's a place that's genuinely woven into the city's daily life.

What Bueng Kaen Nakhon is like

It used to be called Bueng Bon, an old natural body of water that was part of the city long before it became the park it is today. Now the lake is ringed with walking paths, a running track, exercise areas, playgrounds, and stucco sculptures telling Isan stories scattered along the way. From the east side, looking across the water, you can see the Phra That Kaen Nakhon pagoda in the distance — the prettiest view of all once the sun has softened.

  • Size — the lake and park together cover roughly 603 rai in central Khon Kaen, maintained by the city municipality
  • Hours — the park is open from before dawn until around 9 PM. People tend to come mornings 05:30–08:00 and evenings 16:00–19:00
  • Entry — free, no admission fee. Free roadside parking at several spots around the lake
  • Where it is — Thanon Rop Bueng (Lakeside Road), Nai Mueang sub-district, just a few minutes from the main town and shopping areas

Best time to go

If you have the choice, come in the evening after about 3 PM, when the sun starts to ease off and the breeze coming off the water turns cool, and stay until sunset. That's when you'll see Bueng Kaen Nakhon in the version locals love most.

Running and cycling around the lake

If you like to run, this is Khon Kaen's home track. One lap around the lake is about 3.5 kilometers on flat ground, with big trees giving shade in stretches and good paving underfoot — easy on the feet. Mornings and evenings fill up with runners, power walkers, aerobics groups, and cyclists all out at once.

  • One lap ≈ 3.5 km — works for both first-time runners and people training distance; do as many laps as you like
  • Scenic cycling route ≈ 7.4 km — the outer loop that takes in the points of interest around the lake in a single ride
  • Exercise areas — outdoor gym equipment and aerobics spaces at several points along the lake edge
  • Mornings are better — cooler air, sun not yet harsh, plenty of people about — safe and lively

Straight talk

The Isan midday sun is no joke, and some stretches of the path have no shade. If you can't avoid running in the daytime, bring water and a hat, and watch out for spots near the water that can get slippery after rain.

The waterfront park — what you can do

Bueng Kaen Nakhon isn't only for running — it's a full-on public park where the whole family can spend a whole afternoon together.

Family

Pedal boats on the lake

One side of the lake rents out swan-shaped pedal boats to take out on the water. Kids love it — it's a classic thing to do here.

Kids

Playground and open lawns

There's a playground and grassy fields for kids to run, kick a ball, or fly a kite. It gets busy in the evening.

Chill

Sitting by the water

Benches and pavilions along the lake to catch the breeze — good for reading a book or just chatting at an easy pace.

Strolling

Isan sculptures

Stucco works depicting Isan life and beliefs line the walking paths — a pleasant stroll with a bit of story to it.

Sunset spots

The highlight of Bueng Kaen Nakhon is the evening. The east side of the lake faces straight out over the water, and as the sun drops the sky turns orange-pink and lays a long reflection across the surface. Look across the lake and you'll catch the silhouette of the Phra That Kaen Nakhon pagoda far off — a scene plenty of people come to photograph. Show up at this hour and you'll understand why locals are so attached to this lake.
