Buriram's Isan food isn't sweet-forward like in some places. Most of it leans salty and savory from pla ra (fermented fish) with a strong sour kick. If you prefer rounder, milder flavors you may need to ask them to tone it down a touch, but if you like your food straight-up spicy and bold, this is your town. We've ordered the list by how popular each spot is with locals and how consistent the cooking is — not by how fancy the place looks.
Ranking the Buriram Isan restaurants locals actually go to
Tam Kratoey
One of the most talked-about som tam spots among Buriram locals, on Chira Road in the town center. The flavors are bold and live up to the name. Standouts are the sour pla khang tom som, fresh prawn som tam, and fish-sauce fried chicken. It gets busy in the evening, so arriving early pays off.
Sida Grilled Chicken
A long-running grilled chicken spot in the town center. The birds are big, the meat juicy and never dry, and the skin is fragrant with seasoning. Pair it with crab-and-pla-ra som tam and hot sticky rice and you're set. It only opens morning to early afternoon, so late starters might miss out — on many days the chicken sells out before closing.
Pa Chu Saep Doe Grilled Chicken
Another grilled chicken spot locals argue can match Sida. The selling point is crisp skin with meat that stays tender inside and a clear herbal aroma. The som tam is pounded fresh in front of you and the jaew dipping sauce is bold. Good for taking back to your room or eating picnic-style.
Buriram Roast Duck (in front of Chang Arena)
Right across from Chang Arena, so it's a regular stop for people coming to watch football and to sightsee. There's both an air-conditioned area and outdoor seating. The standout combo is som tam with roast duck — order them together and you're done. Closed Tuesdays, and it gets packed on match days.
Mum Aroi
An Isan spot next to Buriram Ram Hospital where local workers grab lunch regularly. Standouts are the loaded som tam pa with lots of ingredients, grilled pork neck, and pork-neck nam tok — spicy and well balanced, not so intense it's hard to eat.
Khu Mueang Roast Duck (the original)
A long-established roast duck spot in town on the Buriram–Nang Rong road, open for many years. The duck has crisp skin at a reasonable price, and there's a full spread of crab-and-pla-ra som tam, grilled chicken, and grilled pork neck. Good for taking away as a big family meal.
Larb Buriram (Niwat Rd)
Larb and koi fans should head here — a spot on Niwat Road in the city center. Beef larb, duck larb, and bold koi for those who eat it raw or rare-to-cooked, plus jaew hon you can order by the pot to share in the evening. Open morning to afternoon.
Pa Somwang Grilled Chicken & Som Tam
A homely spot the locals around there genuinely eat at. Grilled chicken and som tam are the main pair, prices are easy on the wallet, and the cooking stays consistent. Not fancy but filling and good value — handy for a quick meal en route or to take away.
Chok Likhit
An Isan spot on Niwat Road with a broad menu — several styles of som tam, larb, nam tok, all the way to tom saep. Easy to come with a group and share. The flavors run fairly bold but they'll adjust to your liking. Open late into the evening.
Krua Isan Rim Mueang
An Isan place that opens evening to late, for people who like to settle in for a while. Order snacky dishes to graze on — standouts are larb, nam tok, tom saep, and som tam. Good for an easy end to the day, a laid-back vibe and easy parking.
Before you go
Many of the famous grilled chicken places only open morning to afternoon, and the chicken usually sells out before closing. If you're set on Sida or Pa Chu, going before noon is the safer bet. And the som tam spot in front of Chang Arena gets packed on match days, so allow extra time to wait.

The Isan dishes to order for a full spread
- Crab & pla-ra som tam — the savory Buriram style, salty first, sour after. If you don't eat pla ra, ask for som tam Thai instead.
- Grilled chicken — pick a place that grills to order rather than leaving it sitting out; the skin should be fragrant and crisp with the meat still juicy.
- Larb & koi — koi is eaten raw, so if you're not used to it, order cooked larb or larb khua instead.
- Tom saep / pla khang tom som — slurp it hot to cut the richness, sharply sour the way Isan locals like it.
- Grilled pork neck + nam tok — ordered with som tam and sticky rice, it's the standard set that never misses.
Where to eat by area
Chang Roundabout / Rajabhat area
The zone for som tam and student eats — easy prices, bold flavors, and shops open into the evening. Plenty to choose from on a stroll.
Niwat Road area
A cluster of larb, koi, and Isan spots that stay open late. Plenty of options for dinner within walking distance.
Around Chang Arena
Good for football fans — som tam, roast duck, and Isan spots to stop at before or after the game.
Straight talk: most Isan places in Buriram are genuine local spots, not done up for photos. Some take cash only and have no English menu. If you're going as a group, ordering several dishes to share works out better value — and don't forget to order extra sticky rice, because it runs out fast.
