Chiang Mai is a serious mookata town, from open-air joints by the roadside to air-conditioned buffets inside malls. Most prices land at 99–249 THB per person, drinks and ice cream included. This ranking weighs freshness, value for money, cleanliness, and real reviews on Wongnai and Tripadvisor. It's not sorted by the most expensive being the best.
9 mookata and grill-it-yourself buffets worth the price
Khun Moo Mookata by Moo Song Chan (Nimman)
A well-known name in the Nimman area. The draw is the double-layer sliced pork and sliced ribeye, both served generously. Air-conditioned, no time limit, and you can add a jaew hon hotpot for 39 THB more if you're into pork-dip. The sweet-sour seafood dipping sauce hits the spot. It gets packed in the evenings, so book ahead.
Joolong Mookata Buffet (behind The Prince Hotel)
An old-timer of more than 10 years on the Wat Ket side. Easy on the wallet but genuinely loaded with food, including seafood you can pile on: white shrimp, razor clams, scallops, squid. For the meat-eaters there's black-pepper-marinated pork belly and beef. A value pick locals come back to regularly. There's another branch in San Kamphaeng.
Chang Phueak Mookata (San Sai branch)
An easy-on-the-wallet buffet that comes loaded: thick-cut pork, a well-balanced broth, and the standout is the punchy galangal dipping sauce. Even solo it's 220 THB, and it suits anyone who wants proper Thai-style BBQ rather than a seafood focus. Several branches.
Fa Ham Mookata Buffet
If you're after seafood, come here. The selling point is live shrimp and seafood folded into a single buffet, and the mookata still delivers with pork belly and sliced ribeye. Fresh, clean, and a net price with nothing added on top. It's opposite Wat Fa Ham on the north side of town.
Moo Ood Mookata (Khu Mueang)
A rising spot in the Khu Mueang (moat) area. The standout is the no-time-limit buffet, ideal if you're a slow eater who likes to sit and talk for hours. Good-quality fresh ingredients at a fair price, and it's easy to reach inside the old city, so it works well for travelers staying near the moat.
Air-Con Mookata by Seichi
If you don't want to leave smelling of smoke, this is your spot. Fully air-conditioned grilling, no time limit, and a full spread of pork, beef, seafood, and dessert. Mid-range price, but the comfort you get back makes it worth it. Good for a rainy day or when the heat is on.
Sukhontha Mookata (Huay Kaew)
A Chiang Mai institution and one of the biggest places around. A huge spread of both savory and sweet options, live music, and grills that heat up fast, so it's great for big groups. To be straight with you, the flavors are middle-of-the-road and it gets very crowded at peak times, but the capacity and atmosphere are worth the price.
Kat Jang Mookata (open at lunch)
What's hard to find in Chiang Mai is mookata open from midday. This one opens around noon, so it suits a lunchtime BBQ craving or anyone who doesn't want to wait until evening. Air-conditioned, with a low starting price. A solid option for a day when you fancy mookata but the afternoon rain rolls in.
99 THB Lunch Mookata Buffet (Mueang Mai)
For the budget-minded, there's a buffet running a lunch promo at around 99 THB. The ingredients aren't fancy but you'll leave full for the money. Good for students and workers around the Mueang Mai–Chang Phueak area. Check the restaurant's page before you go, since promo prices shift by season and some items can run out fast at peak times.
How to pick a spot
If value for money matters most, go for a 199 THB place with seafood (Joolong / Chang Phueak) · if you don't want to smell of smoke, choose an air-conditioned spot (Khun Moo / Seichi) · if you're with a big group, Sukhontha can seat plenty.

Rough prices — how much to pay for good value
Mookata buffets in Chiang Mai split roughly into three price brackets. These are approximate figures for 2026 and you should check with the restaurant's page before going, since they move up and down with ingredient costs.
- 99–179 THB — budget, mostly pork and vegetables, little or no seafood, good for a quick filling meal
- 199–229 THB — the sweet spot, usually some seafood, with drinks and ice cream included
- 249 THB and up — live shrimp/seafood or air-conditioning and no time limit, good for a long sit-down
Get the most out of Chiang Mai mookata — local tips
- Go around 17:00–18:00 before the crowds: the spread is still complete and you won't wait for a table
- For popular Nimman spots, call ahead to book, especially on Fridays and Saturdays
- Check how many hours the 'time limit' is. Many places cap it at 2 hours, so if you plan to sit a while, pick a no-time-limit spot
- Grab small amounts of fresh food and top up as you go, so nothing sits on your plate and you get to try more variety
- Many places take mainly cash, so bring some so you're not caught out
Straight talk
