Chiang Rai Nature Trip
Phu Chi Fa–Doi Tung–Mae Fah Luang in 3 Days

Chiang Rai has plenty for people who love mountains, but get the route wrong and you'll just wear yourself out — because Phu Chi Fa and Doi Tung sit on opposite sides of the province. We've planned this one as 3 days, 2 nights, starting with a night near Phu Chi Fa so you wake up for the sea of mist at dawn, then loop back toward Doi Tung the next day. The driving stays easy, there's no rushing, and you still get the whole set: the mist, the flowers and the forest canopy walk.

Chiang Rai Nature Trip Phu Chi Fa–Doi Tung–Mae Fah Luang in 3 Days

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

First, an honest word: a Chiang Rai nature trip works best with your own car. Phu Chi Fa is in Thoeng district, to the east of the province, while Doi Tung is up in Mae Fah Luang district to the north near the border — the two are about 3 hours apart by road. Sleeping near Phu Chi Fa on the first night lets you get up early enough for the sea of mist, then you can take your time driving back toward Doi Tung on the second day.

The 3-day plan at a glance

  • Day 1 — leave town in the afternoon, drive up to Phu Chi Fa, check in on the mountain, and stroll around in the cool evening air.
  • Day 2 — wake at 4am, hike up to the viewpoint for sunrise and the sea of mist, then make the long drive back toward Doi Tung.
  • Day 3 — visit Doi Tung Royal Villa, Mae Fah Luang Garden and the Tree Top Walk before heading home.
Day 1

City → Phu Chi Fa

13:00
Have a proper lunch in town before you set off. There are few restaurants up at Phu Chi Fa and they close early, so pack some snacks for the car.
14:00
Drive from Chiang Rai town to Phu Chi Fa, about 100 km, roughly 2.5–3 hours. The last 20 km is a winding, steep mountain road. A regular sedan can make it, but drive carefully — if you're not used to mountain roads, leave yourself extra time.
17:00
Check in around Ban Rom Fa Thong / Ban Rom Fa Thai at the foot of Phu Chi Fa.Mountain stays range from homestays and tents to resorts with mountain views. They fill up fast in the cool season, so book ahead.
18:00
Wander the small market in front of your stay and grab a hot chrysanthemum tea in the cold air.On cool-season nights the temperature can drop into the single digits — bring a heavy jacket.

About the weather

The Phu Chi Fa sea of mist is at its best from November to February, especially the cold snap in December–January. In the rainy season (May–September) you can still see mist if the sky clears, but the trails are more slippery. To be honest, some mornings the sky is closed in and you see no mist at all — it comes down to luck and the weather that day.

Day 2

Phu Chi Fa sea of mist → drive back toward Doi Tung

04:30
Get up and ready, put on a warm layer, and drive or walk to the parking area at the base of the hill. The forest park opens at 04:30; the area entry fee is a few tens of baht. From there it's about a 700 m hike up to the viewpoint on a steep trail.
05:30
Reach the Phu Chi Fa cliff and wait for first light and the sea of mist over the Laos side.Bring a flashlight or use your phone — the path is dark and narrow. In high season it gets crowded, so going early gets you a better spot.
07:30
Head down, have breakfast near your stay, pack up and check out.If you're still up for it, you can stop at nearby Phu Chi Dao or Phu Chi Duean. Local trucks can be hired for around 500 THB each, seating 5 people.
09:30
Make the long drive from Phu Chi Fa toward Doi Tung, roughly 4–5 hours. It's a long way and mostly mountain road. Stop for restrooms and to fill up in one of the towns along the way.
15:00
Check in around Mae Sai / Mae Chan at the foot of Doi Tung and rest up.Staying here means an easy morning up to Doi Tung the next day, with no long drive.

Day 3 — Doi Tung at an unhurried pace

Doi Tung is a royal development project initiated by the Princess Mother. Several sights up here flow into one another on foot: the Doi Tung Royal Villa, Mae Fah Luang Garden, the Hall of Inspiration and the Mae Fah Luang Arboretum (Doi Chang Mub), plus the DoiTung Tree Top Walk canopy bridge. Plan on giving this place a full day.

Day 3

Doi Tung Royal Villa → Mae Fah Luang Garden → Tree Top Walk

08:00
Drive up Doi Tung and buy the combined ticket at the ticket office. The combined ticket for 4 sites (Hall of Inspiration + Royal Villa + Mae Fah Luang Garden + Doi Chang Mub) is 220 THB/adult, 110 THB for students/seniors/people with disabilities — cheaper than buying each site separately at 90 THB.
09:00
Tour the Doi Tung Royal Villa, a wooden building blending Lanna and Swiss architecture. The villa is open 07:00–17:30 (closed for lunch 11:30–12:30). Dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering the building.
10:30
Walk through Mae Fah Luang Garden, a cool-climate flower garden in a mountain valley. The garden is open 06:30–18:00. Flowers bloom in turn all year, with the brightest colors in the cool season. Children up to 120 cm tall enter free.
12:00
Have lunch at one of the Doi Tung project restaurants and try the freshly roasted Doi Tung coffee. There's a Café DoiTung and a Doi Tung brand shop with clothing and hill-tribe handicrafts for souvenirs.
13:30
Do the DoiTung Tree Top Walk, a canopy bridge inside Mae Fah Luang Garden. The entry fee is separate, around 150 THB. Entry is in timed slots roughly every 30 minutes. Children under 12 or shorter than 120 cm can't go in.
15:00
Drive on up to the Mae Fah Luang Arboretum (Doi Chang Mub), the highest point in this area. It's about 8 km from Doi Tung, with a free shuttle from Doi Tung. The air is cool and the views are wide open — a good last stop before driving back to town or the airport.

Before you go

  • Car — self-driving is by far the easiest. Both Phu Chi Fa and Doi Tung are mountain roads, so check your brakes and tires before you set off.
  • Warm clothes — cool-season mornings on Phu Chi Fa are genuinely cold. Pack a heavy jacket, a hat and gloves.
  • Cash — entry fees and shops on the mountains mostly take cash, and phone signal is weak in spots.
  • Book your stay — Phu Chi Fa accommodation fills up very fast in the cool season, so reserve weeks ahead.

Shortening the plan

If you only have 2 days, pick one or the other. Phu Chi Fa and Doi Tung are in opposite directions, so cramming both into 2 days means more time on the road than actually sightseeing. If you really want both, 3 days is the sweet spot.

FAQ

Can you visit Phu Chi Fa and Doi Tung in one day?

Not recommended. The two are on opposite sides of the province, about 4–5 hours apart by road, so cramming them into one day burns the whole day on driving. The 3-day plan — a first night near Phu Chi Fa, then looping back to Doi Tung — is far more comfortable.

When is the Phu Chi Fa sea of mist at its best?

November to February, especially the cold December–January stretch when chances of seeing the mist are highest. In the rainy season you can still catch it if the sky clears, but the trails are more slippery, and on some mornings the sky stays closed in and you may see no mist at all.

How much is Doi Tung entry?

The combined ticket for 4 sites (Hall of Inspiration, Royal Villa, Mae Fah Luang Garden and Doi Chang Mub) is 220 THB for adults. The DoiTung Tree Top Walk costs an extra 150 THB or so on its own. Prices can change, so check at the ticket office on the day.

What time do you need to wake up for sunrise at Phu Chi Fa?

Aim to be up around 4:30am, since the forest park opens at 04:30 and you still have to hike about 700 meters up a steep trail to the viewpoint. Arriving before first light, around 05:30–06:00, gets you a good spot before the crowds.

Can you drive up Phu Chi Fa in a regular sedan?

Yes, but the last 20 kilometers is a winding, steep mountain road. Drive carefully and check your brakes before setting off. If you're not used to mountain roads, leave extra time and take it slow.
