Chiang Rai–Phayao 3 Days
Lake + Floating Temple

Chiang Rai and Phayao sit right next to each other, and driving from downtown Chiang Rai down to Kwan Phayao lake takes only a little over an hour. Yet most people finish Chiang Rai and head straight home, when going just a bit further gets you a big freshwater lake, a temple in the middle of the water you reach by boat, and a small, quiet town that hasn't gotten crowded. Here's a 3-day, 2-night plan you can follow whether you're driving yourself or riding the bus.

Chiang Rai–Phayao 3 Days Lake + Floating Temple

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

This trip is built to start in Chiang Rai, which has an airport and far more places to stay. You knock out the Chiang Rai highlights on day one, then drop south to Phayao on day two. The Chiang Rai–Phayao stretch is about 90 km along Highway 1 (Phahonyothin) — an easy hour-plus drive. If you're not driving, Green Bus runs this route all day, with tickets in the low hundreds of baht and roughly the same travel time.

The heart of the Phayao side is Kwan Phayao, the largest freshwater lake in northern Thailand. Out in the middle of the water sits Wat Tilok Aram, an old Lanna-era temple that sank underwater and was later rediscovered — you reach it by boat. It's the thing that genuinely sets Phayao apart from other towns.

Day 1 — Cover Chiang Rai before heading south

Day 1

Chiang Rai highlights + 1 night in Chiang Rai

08:30
Start at Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple)Go early before the sun gets harsh and before the tour buses arrive — fewer people and easier photos. Free entry for Thais, with a big parking lot.
10:30
On to Wat Rong Suea Ten (the Blue Temple)It's on the other side of town, about a 20-minute drive. The indigo-blue hall photographs well all day.
12:00
Khao soi / northern Thai food for lunch in townSeveral well-known khao soi shops are clustered in the town center. Pick one that stays open into the afternoon to be safe.
14:00
Choui Fong Tea Plantation or Singha ParkIf you love tea-field views, go with Choui Fong (a longer drive out toward Mae Chan). If you'd rather take it easy closer to town, go with Singha Park.
17:30
Chiang Rai Clock Tower + Walking Street (if it's a weekend)The clock tower puts on a light show every hour in the evening, and you can eat your way through the market for a good while.
19:30
Stay in downtown Chiang RaiStay near the clock tower or the Night Bazaar — easy to walk for food. Drive down to Phayao the next morning.

Tip on where to stay

Spending the first night in Chiang Rai is the better value, since it has far more places to stay and more late-night food than Phayao. Then spend the second night lakeside in Phayao so you can wake up to the sunrise.

Day 2

Chiang Rai → Kwan Phayao (about a 1 hr 20 min drive)

09:00

10:30

12:00
Lakeside lunchPick a spot with a lake view, such as Chid Lom Chom Kwan (open for lunch). Order freshwater fish from the lake — it's the local specialty.
14:00
Boat out to Wat Tilok Aram in the middle of the lakeBoard at the lakeside pier, open roughly 07:30–17:00 daily. The boat fare is a few dozen baht per person, life vests provided, round trip about half an hour.
16:00
Stroll the Phor Khun Ngam Mueang Monument + the naga statue by the lakeThe wide lakeside promenade is where Phayao locals come out to walk in the evening — cool, breezy, and pleasant.
18:00
Dinner by the lake + overnight in PhayaoLakeside spots like Niyom Sukh open from evening into the night. Stay at a hotel near the lake so it's an easy walk back.

What to know about the boats

There are both paddle boats and motorboats, with slightly different prices. On weekdays when it's quiet, you may have to wait for the group to fill before the boat sets off. Late afternoon has lovely light, but leave enough time to get back before the boats close at 17:00.

Day 3 — Sunrise + a hilltop temple before you head back

Day 3

Catch Phayao's morning views, then return to Chiang Rai / continue on

06:00
Watch the sunrise over Kwan PhayaoGetting up early is well worth it — the morning light reflecting off the water against the mountain backdrop is the thing visitors to Phayao mention most.
08:00
Morning alms / coffee by the lakeThere are cafes and coffee shops along the lake that open early. Sip a coffee looking out over the water before you start the day.
09:30
Head up to Wat Analayo Thipayaram (Doi Busarakham)A hilltop temple on the far side of the lake with Buddha images and lots of artwork. The viewpoint looks down over the whole expanse of the lake.
12:00
Lunch in Phayao townNorthern Thai food or Phayao-style noodles, easy on the wallet, before you set off.
13:30
Head homeIt's just over an hour back up north to Chiang Rai, or you can continue south to Lampang/Chiang Mai on the same road.

If you have an extra day

Push on up to Phu Langka via Pong district for the morning sea of fog, with mountain-view cafes to sit at. The road up is fairly winding, though, so it suits confident drivers, and it's best in the cool season when the fog actually rolls in.

Making the most of Phayao — what to know before you go

  • Kwan Phayao is all about morning and evening light — midday is hot with harsh sun. The prettiest, most photogenic times are early morning and just before sunset.
  • Boats to Wat Tilok Aram stop at 17:00 — don't show up too late; leave time for the boat to set off and get you back.
  • Phayao is a quiet town — shops and lodgings close earlier than in Chiang Rai. Plan dinner ahead and don't go looking late at night.
  • Carry cash — many lakeside spots and the boat fares take cash more easily than bank transfers.

Where's better to stay each night

Night 1

Stay in Chiang Rai town

Plenty of places to stay, walkable night spots — ideal for the first night while you're still covering the Chiang Rai highlights.

Night 2

Stay lakeside in Phayao

Wake up to a lake view and walk out to watch the sunrise. Quieter and calmer than a big city.

FAQ

How far is Chiang Rai from Phayao, and how long does it take?

It's about 90 km along Highway 1. Driving yourself takes roughly 1 hour 15–20 minutes. By bus (Green Bus runs all day) it's about the same, with tickets in the low hundreds of baht.

Is the boat the only way to reach Wat Tilok Aram?

Yes — the temple sits in the middle of Kwan Phayao, so you board a boat at the lakeside pier. It runs roughly 07:30–17:00 daily, the fare is a few dozen baht per person, life vests are provided, and the round trip takes about half an hour.

When is Kwan Phayao at its prettiest?

Early morning at sunrise and the evening before sunset. The soft light reflecting off the water against the mountains looks far better than the harsh midday sun. In the cool season the weather is pleasant enough to linger along the lake for a long while.

Can I do this plan without my own car?

Yes. Take the bus from Chiang Rai down to Phayao, then get around town by taxi or rented motorbike. The key spots — Wat Sri Khom Kham, the lake pier, and the monument — are close together. For the hilltop temple, it's best to charter a vehicle.

How many nights should I stay, Chiang Rai or Phayao?

We'd suggest 1 night in Chiang Rai (more lodging and night-time food) and 1 night lakeside in Phayao so you can wake up for the sunrise — 3 days and 2 nights total is just about right.
