Doi Tung
Royal Villa + Mae Fah Luang Garden

Doi Tung is a mountain in Thailand's far north that was once covered in opium fields, then reforested and replanted with cool-climate flower gardens under a royal initiative led by the Princess Mother. These days people come up for the cool air year-round, the flowers, and the chance to walk through the Doi Tung Royal Villa and Mae Fah Luang Garden in a single day. Here's everything you need on fees, hours, and how to get up there.

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Doi Tung sits in Mae Fah Luang district, about an hour's drive from Chiang Rai city. The two most visited spots sit right next to each other: the Doi Tung Royal Villa (the Princess Mother's former residence) and Mae Fah Luang Garden (the cool-climate flower garden). It's an easy walk from one to the other, so most people do both in one go.

Doi Tung Royal Villa

The villa is a two-storey wooden house in a Lanna-meets-Swiss style, built from pine and recycled crate wood. Inside you can see the Princess Mother's study, bedroom, and personal belongings, and the rooms give a clear sense of how simply she lived. The grounds around the villa are shaded by big trees with flowers lining the paths.

  • Opening hours — daily 07:00–17:30
  • Entry fee — adults 90 THB · students/seniors/people with disabilities/clergy 45 THB
  • Dress code — no shorts or spaghetti-strap tops inside the villa; if you're not dressed for it, wraps are available to borrow at the entrance
  • Photos — no photography inside the villa; you can only shoot the exterior

Honest note

Inside the villa you can't take photos and you have to take your shoes off. If you came purely to shoot photos you might feel like you're walking through this part quickly, but if you're interested in the Princess Mother's story you'll get a lot more out of it.

Mae Fah Luang Garden — cool-climate flowers

Mae Fah Luang Garden sits right in front of the villa, a cool-climate flower garden laid out across a sloping hillside with beds that change throughout the year. You'll find salvia, petunias, begonias, roses, and more than 70 kinds of flowering and ornamental plants along with climbing-vine arbours. The centrepiece is the 'Continuity' sculpture in the middle of the garden, where people love to pose with the flower beds behind them.

  • Opening hours — daily 06:30–18:00 (opens earlier than the villa, good for morning light)
  • Entry fee — adults 90 THB · students/seniors/people with disabilities 45 THB · children up to 120 cm tall free
  • Best time for flowers — November to February, when the cool-climate blooms peak together and the weather is pleasantly cool
  • Colours of Doi Tung festival — runs from late in the year into the new year, with extra special flower displays across the whole garden

Weather by season — when to go

Doi Tung sits at around 900–1,200 metres above sea level, so it stays cooler than the lowlands all year. Daytime up top is pleasant even in hot season, while in cool season mornings and evenings can drop into the single digits. Bring a warm layer if you're coming late in the year.

Recommended

Cool season (Nov–Feb)

The most popular window: cool air, gardens in full bloom, morning mist. But it gets crowded and rooms fill up fast, so book ahead.

Fewer crowds

Rainy season (Jun–Oct)

Lush and green with lots of mist and fewer people, and rooms are cheaper. The downside: rain makes photos harder and the mountain road gets slippery in spots.

Clear skies

Hot season (Mar–May)

Still cooler up top than down below, with fewer flowers than cool season but clearer skies. Good for avoiding the crowds; watch for haze early in the year.

Entry fees and the 4-site combo ticket

Doi Tung sells tickets two ways: pay per site, or buy one combo ticket covering 4 sites. If you plan to walk the whole area, the combo works out cheaper and saves you queuing to buy tickets over and over.

  • 4-site combo ticket — Doi Tung Royal Villa + Mae Fah Luang Garden + Hall of Inspiration + Mae Fah Luang Arboretum (Doi Chang Mub). Adults 220 THB · students/seniors/people with disabilities 110 THB
  • Buying separately — each site is 90 THB for adults · 45 THB for students/seniors/people with disabilities
  • Tree Top Walk — an extra 150 THB for the canopy walkway (you still need the separate 90 THB Mae Fah Luang Garden ticket). Open 08:30–16:30, the walkway sits about 40 m up
  • Hall of Inspiration — an exhibition on the history of the Mahidol royal family. Open 08:00–17:00

Tip

If you're coming as a family and plan to walk every site, the 220 THB combo is clearly better value than buying separately. But if you only have half a day, just the villa plus Mae Fah Luang Garden covers the highlights.

Getting up to Doi Tung

There's no public transport that runs straight to the top of Doi Tung. The easiest way is to drive yourself or rent a car/motorbike. The road up is a winding paved climb, so drive during daylight and check your brakes before you start.

  • Driving from Chiang Rai city — take Phahonyothin Road (Highway 1) toward Mae Sai, then turn onto Highway 1149 to climb the mountain. It's about 60 km total and takes roughly an hour
  • From Mae Sai — closer; drive down to the Doi Tung junction in about 30–40 min, handy if you're also doing the Mae Sai border
  • No private car — rent a car with a driver or join a half-day tour from town; ask your hotel or a local tour operator. Public songthaews don't run reliably to the top, so check before your travel day
  • Carry on to Doi Chang Mub — from the villa it's about another 15 min up to the arboretum and border viewpoint, which is cooler and quieter
