Getting Around Thailand

🔄 Updated 20 Jun 2026

Short answer: For long distances (e.g. Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Phuket) domestic flights are usually fastest and best value. For medium hops, take a train or minivan/bus. For islands, take a ferry or speedboat from the pier. In Bangkok use the BTS/MRT and Grab; in small towns use songthaews, taxis or a rented motorbike. You can book intercity and ferry tickets online ahead.

In town: BTS, Grab, songthaews, motorbikes

  • Bangkok: the BTS/MRT is fastest and beats traffic; top up a card or buy single-trip tickets
  • Grab: hail a car via the app and see the price first — handy when you do not want to haggle
  • Songthaews/tuk-tuks: common in small towns and islands; always agree the price before getting in
  • Motorbike rental: convenient on islands, but carry an International Driving Permit, wear a helmet and check insurance

Motorbikes: convenient but risky

Motorbike crashes are a leading cause of tourist injury. Only ride if you genuinely know how, wear a helmet every time, and make sure your travel insurance covers riding.

FAQ

How should I get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Phuket?

For long distances like these, domestic flights are usually best value and fastest, especially booked ahead. Bangkok to Chiang Mai is also popular by overnight train for those who enjoy the experience and save a night of accommodation.

How do ferries to the islands work?

Usually you reach a coastal town first by road or air (e.g. Surat Thani, Phuket, Krabi, Trat), then take a ferry or speedboat from the pier. In high season it is best to book combined bus-and-boat tickets ahead.

Can I use Grab in Thailand?

Yes. Grab works in Bangkok and many tourist cities, shows the price upfront and lets you pay by card or cash — handy when you would rather not haggle over a taxi fare.

Do I need a license to rent a motorbike in Thailand?

Legally you need an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. Many rental shops do not ask, but if you are stopped or have an accident without a valid license, insurance usually will not pay. Always wear a helmet.
