Hat Yai With Kids
An Easy 2-Day, 1-Night Family Trip

Hat Yai is an easier city to visit with kids than you'd expect — the main sights sit close together, just a few minutes' drive apart, and there's enough variety to keep children entertained. There's a cable car up the mountain that kids get a kick out of, a 3D art museum that's fun for photos, Khlong Hae Floating Market packed with good food, and Ton Nga Chang Waterfall where kids can splash around and cool off. We've laid this out as a 2-day, 1-night plan with short travel times, a midday break for naps, and real opening hours and entry fees so you're ready to head out.

Hat Yai With Kids An Easy 2-Day, 1-Night Family Trip

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The trick to visiting Hat Yai with kids is to not cram in too much — children tire out and get cranky fast. In this plan we leave a midday gap to head back to the hotel or find a cool spot to sit before carrying on, and we save the energy-heavy stuff, like swimming at the waterfall, for the last day so fatigue doesn't pile up. We checked that every spot in this plan is still open, but opening hours and fees can change, so call ahead or check each place's page one more time before you set off.

The 2-day, 1-night plan at a glance

  • Day 1 (morning–evening) — Cable car up Khao Kho Hong, pay respects, take in the view → lunch break → Magic Eye 3D Museum → evening street-food market in town
  • Day 2 (morning–afternoon) — Ton Nga Chang Waterfall for a swim → back to town for lunch → finish at Khlong Hae Floating Market (if it's Friday–Sunday)
  • Key tip — Khlong Hae Floating Market only opens Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If your trip doesn't fall on those days, swap in Kim Yong Market or the ASEAN Night Bazaar for the evening instead.
  • Best for — families with young kids through to older children, with a private car or a rental/Grab, who want an easy, unhurried trip

Pick your travel days carefully

If you want to fit in Khlong Hae Floating Market and the full experience, plan your trip across a Friday–Sunday, since the market only opens those three days. The waterfall and museum are open daily, so you can shuffle those around freely.

Day 1 — Cable car, temples, views + the 3D museum

Day 1

Up Khao Kho Hong, then fun photos indoors

08:30
Leave your hotel in town and head to Hat Yai Municipal Park on Kanjanavanich RoadIt's only about 6 km from the city center — under 15 minutes by car or Grab. Go early while it's still cool and quiet.
09:00
Ride the cable car up Khao Kho Hong, from the lower station near the white jade Guan Yin to the upper station by the Phra Phuttha Mongkhon Maharat BuddhaIt's about 525 meters and takes roughly 5 minutes, with cabins seating about 6–8 people. Kids love it, and the city view opens up wide. Fares for Thais are around 100 THB for adults and around 50 THB for kids under 150 cm, round trip.
09:30
Pay respects at the Phra Phuttha Mongkhon Maharat Buddha on the summit (about 19.9 m tall), then take in the 360-degree view of Hat Yai from the upper plazaThe plaza is open and exposed — great for photos with the kids and the city behind them. Bring a shoulder wrap and a sun hat.
10:30
On the way down, stop at the Brahma shrine midway and the white jade Guan Yin below (the jade figure stands 9.9 m, the largest in Thailand)If you'd rather not take the cable car down, you can drive down and stop at each shrine yourself — the road is paved the whole way.
12:00
Head back into town for lunch, then let the kids nap a bit at the hotelThe midday sun is harsh — rest in an air-conditioned room before tackling the afternoon, and the kids won't get cranky.
14:30
Go to the Magic Eye 3D Museum on Kanjanavanich Road for photos with the various trompe-l'oeil themed scenesOpen daily roughly 08:30–17:30. Entry is around 300 THB for adults and around 200 THB for kids; children under 80 cm get in free. There are several zones — underwater world, zoo, ice world — and it's indoors with air-con, so it's great on a hot day.
16:30
Take a drink break at the museum café or somewhere nearby before heading back into townKids get hungry and tired after all those photos — top them up before dinner.
18:00
Dinner: graze through a market in town like Kim Yong Market or the ASEAN Night BazaarPlenty of southern Thai dishes and street food, so kids can find something easy to eat. A relaxed wander before heading to bed.

How to take kids on the cable car without the tears

If a young child is scared of heights, seat them in the middle of the cabin and chat about the city view below. At just 5 minutes, most kids handle it fine. If you're a bigger group with a car, driving up yourself and taking the cable car one way as a highlight is cheaper.

Day 2 — A waterfall swim + Khlong Hae Floating Market

Day 2

Cool off in the water, then finish at the floating market

08:30
Leave town for Ton Nga Chang Waterfall on the old Hat Yai–Rattaphum Road, about 26 km from the cityIt's roughly a 30–40 minute drive. Go early while the water is still cool and the crowds are thin. Bring swimwear, towels, and non-slip shoes.
09:30
Enter Ton Nga Chang Waterfall (7 tiers) and let the kids play in the shallow pools on the lower tiersEntry is around 20 THB for adults and around 10 THB for kids, with parking around 30 THB. Open roughly 08:00–17:00. Tier 2 (Ton Pliw) and Tier 3 (Ton Nga Chang) have pools that are good for a swim.
11:30
Change clothes and grab a snack at a restaurant near the waterfallThere are restaurants not far from the falls — order something hot for the kids once they're done swimming.
12:30
Head back into town for a proper lunch, then let the kids napThe afternoon sun is harsh — rest up before heading out to the floating market in the evening.
15:30
Go to Khlong Hae Floating Market (open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only, roughly 13:00–21:00)It was the South's first floating market, with southern Thai food sold from boats and on land at gentle prices. Kids love watching the paddle boats and the Nora dance performances. If your trip doesn't land on a market day, swap in a walk through a city market instead.
18:30
Have dinner at the floating market — try the southern sweets and local dishes before heading home or to the airportThe market is along the route out of town, so it's convenient if you're continuing to the airport or heading home.

Keeping kids safe at the waterfall

Stick to the shallow pools on the lower tiers only — don't let kids climb the higher tiers or stand on mossy rocks, which are very slippery. Keep a close eye on them at all times and check whether it's been raining heavily, since flash floods can come fast. If the water suddenly runs strong, get out immediately.

Backup spots for kids, in case it rains or you want more

If it rains and the kids can't swim at the waterfall, or you want to add another half-day, Hat Yai has plenty more indoor kid-friendly spots and fun activities to slot into the plan.

Indoor

Hatyai Ice Dome

An indoor ice world with ice-sculpture rooms and an ice slide. It's below freezing inside and kids get a thrill out of it — good for a rainy or scorching day. Bring warm jackets.

Water play

Hat Yai Water Park

A water park near Hat Yai airport with inflatable rides and slides for all ages. Kids can play all day — a convenient alternative to the waterfall if you just want an easy splash.

Nature

Bird Garden at Hat Yai Municipal Park

The bird garden and nature trail inside the municipal park — an easy stroll to show kids birds and trees. Free entry, and a nice add-on for the morning.

Tips for a smooth Hat Yai trip with kids

  • Rent a car or use Grab — the sights are spread outside the city, so a private car is the most flexible and the easiest way to move kids and luggage without waiting around
  • Pack the kids' kit — swimwear, towels, a change of clothes, hats, sunscreen, water, and snacks to keep them from getting hungry en route
  • Leave time for naps — young kids need a midday break; don't schedule activities back to back all day
  • Check days and hours before you go — Khlong Hae Floating Market opens Friday–Sunday only, and the cable car is sometimes closed on Mondays with variable closing times, so a quick call ahead is safest
  • Stay in the city center — base yourself around Kim Yong Market or near the train station so eating out is easy and you can pop back for a midday rest

Rough budget per family

Entry fees on this plan are inexpensive: the cable car is around 100 THB for adults / 50 THB for kids, the 3D museum around 300 THB for adults / 200 THB for kids, and the waterfall 20 THB for adults / 10 THB for kids. Total entry fees for the whole trip for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) come to roughly 1,300–1,400 THB — not counting food, lodging, and transport.
