The nice thing about Hua Hin is that it's close enough to Bangkok to do as a day trip if you really wanted to. But if you want the stay to feel worth it, one night over Saturday-Sunday is just right. Drive down early on day one, soak up the beach and seafood, then hit the market in the evening. On day two, wake up to the sea breeze, grab your photo spots, and start driving back in the afternoon to beat the return traffic.
Before You Go: Routes and Timing Worth Knowing
The main route is Rama 2 β Phetkasem (Highway 35 onto Highway 4), passing Samut Sakhon, Phetchaburi, and Cha-am before reaching Hua Hin. It's normally a 3-hour drive, but right now Rama 2 still has elevated-expressway construction in stretches, and traffic builds up easily, especially Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings. On long-weekend holidays, give yourself an extra 1-1.5 hours to be safe.
- Leave before 7 a.m. β Rama 2 is still clear at that hour, and you'll reach Hua Hin before noon, in time for a beachfront lunch.
- You can bypass Rama 2 β if traffic is really bad, you can cut through Bang Khae, Ekkachai, and Setthakit 1 Road to come out at Samut Sakhon, though there are more traffic lights. Only worth it when Rama 2 is genuinely jammed.
- Fill up the tank before Phetchaburi β there are stations along Phetkasem, but queues get long on holidays, so it's easier to fill up while you're still in town.
- Have Easy Pass / M-Flow ready β if you use the expressway at the start in Bangkok, it's smoother than paying cash.
The honest truth, between friends
The 3-hour drive assumes clear roads. On long holidays (New Year, Songkran, consecutive holidays), Rama 2 has taken 5-6 hours. If your trip lands on a real long weekend, leave by 5 a.m. or take the train/van instead for peace of mind.
Book the activities in your Hua Hin trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want β prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 (Saturday): Beach, Seafood, and the Night Market
Drive down to Hua Hin + seafood + Cicada Market
Hua Hin Seafood: Where People Actually Eat
Hua Hin is a seafood town, with everything from scenic beachfront restaurants to humble, budget-friendly spots. We picked these from reviews by people who've actually eaten there, and from places that are still open. Prices are rough ranges and depend on weight and the season of the catch.
Aroy @ Hua Hin
A big restaurant in the center of town with a long menu of seafood and Thai dishes, quick service, and plenty of room for a group. Popular orders are tom yum goong and steamed blue crab.
Krua Nong New
A well-known seafood spot near the road up to Khao Takiab. Homey atmosphere, fresh ingredients, with live crab and prawns to choose from, and friendly prices.
Mong Doo Lay 77
A beachfront seafood restaurant with open views. The standouts are deep-fried sea bass with fish sauce, fried prawns with tamarind sauce, and steamed blue crab.
Laciana by the Sea
An Italian-seafood spot right by the sea with a relaxed feel, good for couples or a special meal. It does seafood, Isaan food, and has a cafe all in one place.
Seafood stalls around Chatchai Market / Night Market
If you want cheap, street-style eats, the night market in the center of town has plenty of grilled and steamed seafood stalls you can order from on the spot.
Ordering seafood without overpaying
Blue crab and prawns are priced by weight. Before you order, ask the price per kilo and have them weigh it in front of you so the bill doesn't catch you off guard. Beachfront restaurants with nice views tend to cost a bit more than the ones tucked down a soi, the trade-off for the setting.
Day 2 (Sunday): Khao Takiab, Photo Spots, Then Drive Home
Khao Takiab + the train station + drive back
Which Area Should You Stay In?
Hua Hin has several areas to stay, so pick based on your trip style. Room rates swing with the season and holidays: weekdays are cheaper than weekends, and long weekends are the priciest. Booking ahead usually gets you a better rate.
Central Hua Hin
Walking distance to the night market, walking street, and Hua Hin Beach, with little driving needed. Good for those who want convenience.
Khao Takiab area
Quieter, close to Cicada Market and the seafood restaurants, with a long beach for swimming. Good for a proper rest.
Cha-am - Pranburi area
Just before or after Hua Hin, with plenty of beachfront resorts. Good for getting away from the bustle, though you'll need to drive into town.

- Check the car β tire pressure, fuel, and coolant before a long drive.
- Book your stay ahead β weekends and long holidays fill up fast and prices jump.
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses β the Hua Hin sun is strong, especially midday to afternoon.
- Cash on hand β some street stalls and market vendors still take only cash / PromptPay.
