Phetchaburi Nature Trip
Kaeng Krachan–Phanoen Thung–Laem Phak Bia

Phetchaburi packs Thailand's largest rainforest, a mountaintop sea of mist, and mangrove forest on the Gulf coast into one province. This 3-day, 2-night plan ties all three together: start at Kaeng Krachan Dam, climb Phanoen Thung for the early-morning mist, then close out with birdwatching at Laem Phak Bia. We've added the opening hours, entry fees, and the advance-booking details you actually need to know before you go.

Phetchaburi Nature Trip Kaeng Krachan–Phanoen Thung–Laem Phak Bia

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

This plan is for travelers who want real nature, not just a photo stop. The main draw is Kaeng Krachan National Park, the largest tract of forest in Thailand, paired with the Phanoen Thung summit that's known for its sea of mist. Then you come back down and wrap up with mangrove forest and the birdwatching spot at Laem Phak Bia on the Gulf of Thailand. It's all in Phetchaburi, and you can drive between them in a single day.

One thing to know before you plan: Kaeng Krachan closes the Ban Krang and Phanoen Thung areas every year from 1 August to 31 October to let the forest recover and for safety reasons. So the best season to visit is November through February, when the air is cool and your odds of catching the mist are highest. If you go then, book ahead, because it gets busy and space is limited.

The 3-day, 2-night plan at a glance

  • Day 1 — From Phetchaburi town into Kaeng Krachan district. Visit the dam, check into a riverside resort, swim, and raft.
  • Day 2 — Wake before dawn to climb Phanoen Thung for the sea of mist, stop at Ban Krang for birds and butterflies, hit Tho Thip Waterfall, then back to the river.
  • Day 3 — Leave Kaeng Krachan, head for the Gulf, and do the birdwatching and mangrove walk at Laem Phak Bia before heading home.

What to know about the drive

The final stretch up Phanoen Thung is about 20 km of unpaved dirt road. Sedans can't make it; you need a high-clearance 4WD with a strong engine. If you're not confident, use the park's shuttle service or a local tour vehicle instead, it's safer and you won't be left guessing.

The last day swaps mountains for the sea. The Laem Phak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project under the Royal Initiative sits in Ban Laem district. It's a natural wastewater treatment project, and as the ecosystem recovered, the mangrove forest became home to many kinds of water birds. There's a mangrove nature trail about 850 metres long, shaded by mangrove and samet trees, easy walking with nothing strenuous.

Entry fees and a rough budget

  • Kaeng Krachan park entry — Thai adults 60 THB, children 30 THB, seniors free; foreign adults 300 THB, children 150 THB.
  • Camping fee — around 150 THB/night (if you camp in the park instead of a resort).
  • Riverside stays — from around 890–1,800 THB/night, many including meals and water activities.
  • Laem Phak Bia — open for visits and the nature walk; ask at the service point before entering the area.
  • Fuel / tour vehicle up Phanoen Thung — budget extra; the park vehicle carries a separate service charge.

Before you go

  • Check the season — avoid the forest closure from 1 Aug to 31 Oct every year. The best window is Nov–Feb.
  • Book ahead through the park website or the QueQ app, especially for the Phanoen Thung slots in high season.
  • Call the park to confirm every time, 032-772-311-2, since slots and rules can change with the weather.
  • Pack warm layers, a flashlight, hiking shoes, and enough drinking water; there are no convenience stores up the mountain.
  • Carry out all your trash, every piece. This is a conservation area, so help keep it for future generations.

Short on time or not up for the hike

If your group has kids or older travelers, drop Tho Thip Waterfall entirely. Just climbing Phanoen Thung for the morning mist and walking Ban Krang is plenty on its own. Spend the leftover time relaxing by the river, it's more comfortable that way.

FAQ

Do I need to book ahead to climb Phanoen Thung?

You should book ahead through the national park website or the QueQ app, especially in the Nov–Feb high season when it's busy and space is limited. If you want to go up at 5 a.m., you need to request permission at least a day in advance, and you should call the park at 032-772-311-2 before every trip.

When is Kaeng Krachan closed during the year?

The Ban Krang and Phanoen Thung areas close every year from 1 August to 31 October to let the forest recover and for visitor safety. The best window to visit is November through February, when the air is cool and your odds of catching the sea of mist are highest.

Can a sedan make it up Phanoen Thung?

No. The final stretch of about 20 km is an unpaved dirt road, so you need a high-clearance 4WD with a strong engine. If you don't have one, use the park's shuttle service or a local tour vehicle instead, it's safer.

When is the best time for birdwatching at Laem Phak Bia?

Birding is best in two windows: before 10 a.m. and from 3–5 p.m., when the birds are out feeding. There's a mangrove nature trail about 850 metres long, shaded by mangrove and samet trees, easy walking with nothing strenuous, so it's good to bring the family.

How many days does this plan take?

Three days and two nights is just right. Day one heads into Kaeng Krachan to swim and stay by the river, day two climbs Phanoen Thung for the sea of mist and walks Ban Krang, and day three comes down to watch birds at Laem Phak Bia before heading home. If you only have 2 days, drop Tho Thip Waterfall.
