Kalasin Dinosaur Trail
2 Days, 1 Night

Kalasin is Thailand's real dinosaur country. The dig site at Phu Kum Khao turned up more than 700 dinosaur bones in a single spot, and that find grew into the Sirindhorn Museum, the most complete dinosaur research center in the country. This plan fits it all neatly into 2 days and 1 night: walk through real fossils, climb the hill to pay respects at Phra Phrom Phumipalo with views over Lam Pao Dam, then close with fresh reservoir fish in Sahatsakhan district.

Kalasin Dinosaur Trail 2 Days, 1 Night

πŸ”„ Updated 21 Jun 2026

Most dinosaur fans who come to Kalasin want two things: real fossils still embedded in the rock layer, and a museum that tells the story in a fun way. The good news is that both sit side by side in Sahatsakhan district, about 28 km from Kalasin town, roughly a 35–40 minute drive. So we built the whole trip around the Sahatsakhan area, with no backtracking, which works well for families with kids and for solo travelers alike.

One key thing to remember before you plan: the Sirindhorn Museum is closed every Monday. If your trip lands on a Monday, swap that day for the temples and the dam instead, and save the museum for another day.

Trip overview: 2 days, 1 night

  • Day 1 β€” Sirindhorn Museum + the Phu Kum Khao dig site (Wat Sakkawan), morning into the afternoon, then close the evening at Lam Pao Dam
  • Day 2 β€” Climb Phu Sing hill to pay respects at Phra Phrom Phumipalo while the morning sky is clear, then stop at Wat Phutthanimit (Phu Khao) to see the thousand-year-old reclining Buddha before heading home
  • Where to stay β€” Sleep in Kalasin town or at a resort near Sahatsakhan close to the dam, whichever suits you

Before you set off

Phu Kum Khao and Sahatsakhan aren't easy to reach by public transport. We'd suggest driving your own car or renting one. If you arrive by coach into Kalasin town, hire a car or a motorbike taxi from there, because the sights are spread out beyond the town.

Day 1 β€” Real fossils at Phu Kum Khao

The first day goes all in on dinosaurs. The Sirindhorn Museum opens at 9 a.m., and arriving right at opening lets you walk through at an easy pace before the tour groups and school parties roll in mid-morning.

Day 1

Sirindhorn Museum Β· Phu Kum Khao Β· Lam Pao Dam

09:00
Arrive at Sirindhorn Museum, Sahatsakhan districtOpen Tue–Sun 9:00–17:00, closed Monday Β· adult admission around 40 THB, cheaper for kids/students. Plenty of parking.
09:15
Walk through 3 buildings and 8 zones following Earth's evolutionIt starts with the birth of the universe and runs up to the dinosaur era, with life-size dinosaur skeleton replicas and multimedia screens. Kids love the moving animatronic dinosaur zone.
10:45
Walk over to the dig site at Wat Sakkawan (Phu Kum Khao)It's right next to the museum, an easy walk Β· this is where more than 700 dinosaur bones were found, still embedded in the rock layer just as they were uncovered. It's covered by a roof, and you're looking at real bones, not replicas.
12:00
Break for lunchThere are restaurants and a coffee shop on the museum grounds, or drive into Sahatsakhan market for rice-and-curry plates, som tam, and grilled chicken, proper Isan style.
13:30
Photograph the dinosaur park and check-in spots around SahatsakhanSahatsakhan town is dinosaur-themed, with dinosaur sculptures at roundabouts and along the roadsides in several spots. Fun for photos.
15:30
Head to Lam Pao Dam for the soft late-afternoon lightIt's a long earthen dam with wide water views Β· stop at Thep Suda Bridge for photos, or find a spot by the water to sit and catch the breeze.
17:30
Dinner at a floating raft restaurant by the damThe rafts and waterside restaurants at Lam Pao Dam are known for grilled prawns, grilled fish, and fried fish. The community-enterprise spots use fish and prawns fresh from the reservoir. Around 150–300 THB per person.

Museum admission

Certain Thai visitors, such as students in uniform, the elderly, and monks, get in at a discounted rate or free under the museum's policy. It's worth bringing your ID card or student card along.

Day 2 β€” Big Buddha on Phu Sing hill + the thousand-year reclining Buddha

The second day is for merit-making and views. Climb Phu Sing hill to pay respects at Phra Phrom Phumipalo early, while the sky is still clear and the air is cool, then stop at Wat Phutthanimit on Phu Khao to see the thousand-year-old reclining Buddha before heading home.

Day 2

Phra Phrom Phumipalo Β· Wat Phutthanimit, Phu Khao

07:30
Set off for Phu Sing hill, Wat PhutthawatGo a bit early to dodge the harsh mid-morning sun, because the viewpoint on the summit has almost no shade.
08:00
Reach the summit of Phu SingThere are 2 ways up Β· climb the roughly 654-step 'Stairway to Heaven' if you're up for it, or drive about 2 km up a paved road if you'd rather not walk.
08:30
Pay respects at Phra Phrom Phumipalo and take in the 360-degree viewThe standing Buddha is around 17.80 m tall on the summit. Looking down, you see Kalasin town and the wide expanse of Lam Pao Dam stretching to the horizon, the best photo spot of the whole trip.
10:00
Head down the hill and stop for coffee or a snackThere are small cafes and local coffee shops in Sahatsakhan to rest at before moving on.
11:00
Go to Wat Phutthanimit (Phu Khao)About 7 km from Sahatsakhan district town Β· the highlight is a reclining Buddha lying on its left side, carved into a rock shelf and over a thousand years old. It was the first ancient artifact in the province to be officially registered.
12:30
Have one last lunch, then head homePick an Isan restaurant in Sahatsakhan, or head back into Kalasin town to shop for local souvenirs before you leave.

Where's the best area to stay

This trip gives you two ways to sleep. You can stay in Kalasin town, which has more hotels and restaurants to choose from, then drive out to Sahatsakhan the next morning. Or you can stay at a resort by Lam Pao Dam or in Sahatsakhan, where you wake up to water views and sit close to all the sights, which is ideal if you want to enjoy the dam in the late afternoon and early morning.

Rough budget per person

  • Sirindhorn Museum admission β€” around 40 THB for adults (cheaper for kids/students)
  • Food for 2 days β€” roughly 500–800 THB, including the dam raft fish meal
  • 1 night's accommodation β€” a double room in town starts around 500–900 THB; dam-side resorts run higher depending on the view
  • Fuel / local transport β€” set aside around 300–500 THB if you're driving yourself

Best time to go

The cool season (November–February) is the most comfortable: clear skies, cool air, and walking Phu Kum Khao and climbing Phu Sing without the heat. In the rainy season the views over Lam Pao Dam turn lush and green, but the path up the hill can get slippery, so take a little care.

FAQ

What days is the Sirindhorn Museum open, and how much is admission?

It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00, closed every Monday. Adult admission is around 40 THB, and kids and students in uniform pay less or get in free under the museum's policy. It's worth bringing your ID card or student card along.

Are Phu Kum Khao and the Sirindhorn Museum the same place?

They're right next to each other and within walking distance. The Sirindhorn Museum sits at the foot of Phu Kum Khao, while the real dinosaur-bone dig site is at Wat Sakkawan on Phu Kum Khao, the spot where more than 700 dinosaur bones were found in a single pit.

Is it hard to get up to Phra Phrom Phumipalo?

There are 2 ways up: climb the roughly 654-step 'Stairway to Heaven' if you want the exercise, or drive about 2 km up a paved road straight to the summit. If you're bringing elderly travelers or small children, we'd suggest driving up.

How many days does the Kalasin dinosaur trail really need?

2 days and 1 night is just right. The first day covers the Sirindhorn Museum, Phu Kum Khao, and Lam Pao Dam; the second day climbs Phu Sing and stops at Wat Phutthanimit. If you only have one day, do the museum and Phu Kum Khao in the morning, then head up to Phra Phrom Phumipalo in the afternoon.

Do you need your own car to visit Kalasin?

It's much easier with your own car or a rental, because the dinosaur-trail sights are spread out in Sahatsakhan district beyond the town, with no public transport reaching them directly. If you arrive by coach into town, you'll need to hire a car or a motorbike taxi from there.
