Kalasin–Khon Kaen
3 Days, 2 Nights Across Central Isan

Kalasin and Khon Kaen sit only about 80 kilometres apart — just over an hour by car — so it's easy to combine both in one trip. The idea behind this plan is to start in Kalasin on the dinosaur and Lam Pao Dam side first, then drift over to bigger Khon Kaen to wrap up with temples, night markets and cafes. We've laid it out hour by hour so you can actually follow it, and driving yourself is by far the easiest option since several of the stops sit outside the city.

Kalasin–Khon Kaen 3 Days, 2 Nights Across Central Isan

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

A cross-province trip through central Isan like this suits anyone with a slightly long weekend or three days off in a row. The draw is two cities with clearly different characters: Kalasin is a quiet secondary city hiding some real treasures — a genuine dinosaur dig site and a big reservoir — while Khon Kaen is the regional hub, with more temples, markets, cafes and places to stay to choose from. Pair them up and you get a trip that never feels samey.

The road distance between Kalasin and Khon Kaen is around 80 kilometres, mainly along Highway 209, about an hour and a half of driving. If you don't have your own car, vans and buses run between the two provinces throughout the day, but honestly several of the best sights are outside the city centres, so having your own wheels is much more flexible.

The 3-day route at a glance

  • Day 1 — Kalasin's dinosaur side: Sirindhorn Museum + the Phu Kum Khao excavation site, then end the evening at Lam Pao Dam
  • Day 2 — Lam Pao to Khon Kaen: catch the dam view in the morning, drive into Khon Kaen, pay respects at Phra That Kaen Nakhon, stroll around Bueng Kaen Nakhon, finish at Ton Tann Market
  • Day 3 — Khon Kaen city and cafes: a morning coffee, a wander around town, grab some souvenirs before heading home

Plan your direction smartly

If you're coming from Bangkok or flying into Khon Kaen airport, drive out to start in Kalasin on the first day, then loop back to finish in Khon Kaen on the last day. That way you don't backtrack, and your final night is near the airport or bus station for an easy trip home.

Day 1 — Kalasin's dinosaur country

Start the trip with the thing Kalasin is proudest of: the Phu Kum Khao dinosaur site in Sahatsakhan district, about 28–29 kilometres north of Kalasin city along Highway 227. This isn't just replicas — it's a site where large numbers of real dinosaur bones were excavated.

Day 1

Kalasin — Phu Kum Khao · Sirindhorn · Lam Pao

09:30
Arrive at Sirindhorn Museum, Sahatsakhan districtThe largest and most complete dinosaur museum in Thailand, laid out in zones from the birth of the planet through to the age of the dinosaurs. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 9:00–17:00, closed Monday. Admission for Thais is just a few dozen THB.
11:30
Walk up to the Phu Kum Khao excavation site next doorAn actual dig pit where you can see dinosaur bones still embedded in the rock layers exactly where they were found. It's a short walk up from the museum, all in the same area.
12:30
Lunch break around SahatsakhanThere are made-to-order shops and Isan eateries in the district. Try local-style green papaya salad with fermented fish and grilled chicken — dishes run from around 50 to just over 100 THB.
14:00
Drive to Lam Pao DamKalasin's large earthen dam, both a fishing ground and a popular spot to relax, with waterside restaurants and viewpoints.
15:30
Cross Thep Suda BridgeA bridge over Lam Pao Dam more than 2 kilometres long, linking Laem Non Wiset with Maharat Island. It's Kalasin's go-to spot for wide open photos.
17:30
Sunset by the dam + a freshwater fish dinnerRestaurants by the dam serve grilled fish, fried fish and spicy fish tom yam straight from Lam Pao — a chilled-out dinner before checking into your room in Kalasin city.

Check the closing day

Sirindhorn Museum is closed on Mondays. If your trip lands on a Monday, flip the order and do Lam Pao Dam first, then save the museum for another day. Don't schedule the first day on a Monday without checking.

Day 2 — From Lam Pao to Khon Kaen

Today is the cross-province day: make the most of Kalasin in the morning, then drive into Khon Kaen. Once you hit the bigger city you switch modes — from nature to temples, town and night markets.

Day 2

Kalasin → Khon Kaen — temple · lake · market

08:30
Catch the morning view at Lam Pao Dam or walk Kalasin's morning marketThe morning market has local bites like sticky rice, grilled pork skewers and khao jee (grilled sticky rice). Grab some for the car to eat along the way.
10:00
Set off for Khon KaenTake Highway 209, about 80 km, roughly an hour and a half of driving. If you want to keep the dinosaur theme going, you could detour to the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum in Wiang Kao district, though it's a longer loop. Choose based on your time.
12:00
Arrive in Khon Kaen, have lunch in townTry an Isan eatery or a noodle shop in the city. Khon Kaen is a student town, so there are plenty of places and prices are friendly.
13:30
Pay respects at Phra That Kaen Nakhon, Wat Nong WaengA beautiful 9-storey pagoda. Climb to the top floor for a 360-degree view over Khon Kaen city and Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake.
15:30
Stroll along Bueng Kaen NakhonA large lake in the middle of the city, ringed by a public park where locals come to run and unwind. The breeze is cool and you can see the pagoda reflected in the water.
18:00
Ton Tann MarketKhon Kaen's biggest night market, open roughly 16:00–23:00, with hundreds of food stalls — local dishes, Lao-style papaya salad, khanom jeen — and plenty of parking.
20:30
On to Khao Niao Road (Si Chan Road) if you've still got it in youA roughly 1.5 km strip of eating and drinking in the city centre, Khon Kaen's main hangout, lively in the evening.

Day 3 — Cafes, souvenirs, then home

No need to rush on the last day. Khon Kaen is a genuine cafe town, with coffee and dessert shops spread all over the city. Sip a relaxed morning coffee, then pick up some souvenirs before heading home.

Day 3

Khon Kaen — morning cafe · souvenirs · heading home

09:00
Morning cafe in Khon Kaen cityPick a shop around the Kangsadan area near Khon Kaen University or in the old town — good atmosphere, good design, coffee around 100-something THB a cup. A nice spot to plan your route home.
10:30
Buy Khon Kaen–Kalasin souvenirsPounded dried pork, pork floss, Isan sausage, naem (fermented pork) and silk are the popular gifts. Kalasin's Praewa silk is also worth tracking down if you want a famous local product.
12:00
Farewell lunchTry grilled chicken with sticky rice or boat noodles before you go — there are several long-running shops in the city.
13:30
Head homeKhon Kaen has an airport, a train station and a large bus terminal, so there are several ways back to Bangkok. Leave time to return your rental car if you've got one.

Tweak the plan to your style

Kids love it

Full-on dinosaur fans

Add the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum in Wiang Kao district, Khon Kaen — Thailand's first dinosaur museum. Pair it with Sirindhorn for a full two-province dinosaur trip.

Chill

Nature and dam

Stay longer at Lam Pao — camp by the dam, go fishing, take a boat out, then ease into Khon Kaen with a lighter single day.

Young crowd

City and cafes

Cut Kalasin down to half a day for just Sirindhorn, then pour the time into Khon Kaen's cafes, markets and nightlife instead.

On where to stay

For the first night, sleep in Kalasin city or at a resort by Lam Pao Dam — either works. For the second night, staying in central Khon Kaen is the most convenient, close to the markets, temples and food. Pick a place near Bueng Kaen Nakhon or Si Chan Road and you can wander out for the night easily.

FAQ

How far apart are Kalasin and Khon Kaen, and is the drive long?

The road distance is around 80 kilometres, mainly along Highway 209, about an hour and a half of driving. If you'd rather not drive, vans and buses run between the two provinces all day, but many of the sights are outside the city centres, so having your own car is more flexible.

Do I need my own car for this trip?

You don't strictly need one, but it makes things much easier, since Phu Kum Khao, Lam Pao Dam and Thep Suda Bridge are all outside the city and public transport doesn't reach everywhere. Without a car, the best bet is to rent one in Khon Kaen, where there are plenty of services, or hire a local driver for the day.

Can you visit Sirindhorn Museum and Phu Kum Khao year-round, and what are the hours?

Sirindhorn Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 9:00–17:00, closed Monday, with admission for Thais at just a few dozen THB. The Phu Kum Khao excavation site is in the same area and you can walk up to it. Avoid Mondays and check public holidays before you go.

Which city should you start in, Kalasin or Khon Kaen?

If you're coming from Bangkok or flying into Khon Kaen, drive out to start in Kalasin on the first day, then loop back to finish in Khon Kaen on the last day. That way you avoid backtracking, and your final night is near the airport or bus station for an easy trip home.

Is this trip fun with kids?

Very much so for families with children, because the dinosaur trail — both Sirindhorn and Phu Wiang — is the kind of museum kids get excited about, with replicas and activities. Lam Pao Dam and Bueng Kaen Nakhon are open spaces where kids can run around freely too.
