Ask anyone in Kamphaeng Phet what to eat for dinner and the answer is almost always som tam and grilled chicken. It's easy to order, easy to share across the whole table, and the shops are spread out both in town and along the bypass road. Some are small mortar-and-pestle stalls that have been around long enough for the neighborhood to know them by heart; others are comfortable spots that stay open late. We've rounded up both kinds.
Isan spots locals in Kamphaeng Phet actually go to
The order below leans on which names come up most often and which are easiest to find — it's not a hard ranking of which one is tastier, since how punchy or mild you like it is personal. Use the area and signature dishes as your guide, then pick whichever is closest to your hotel or on the route you're already driving.
Som Tam Ko Phai
A som tam shop with a long menu that townsfolk bring up a lot. The grilled chicken is the dish plenty of people order again. Recently renovated, comfortable and roomy — a good pick if you're coming with a group and want to share the whole table.
Suea Rong Hai
A punchy Thai-Isan spot right on the bypass road in Sa Kaeo subdistrict, with a wider menu than your usual som tam shop. You'll find full-flavored salted-crab som tam, duck larb, dry crispy fried chicken, and a hot-and-sour tom saap. Great for groups who want to order a bit of everything.
Tam Loei Na Kamphaeng
A som tam shop with lots of unusual variations to try — corn som tam, salted egg yolk som tam, seafood som tam. The one they're known for is tam dong daeng, made by pounding fresh khanom jeen rice noodles, with a sharp flavor that's all their own. Grilled chicken wings and sun-dried pork on the side.
Tam Raet Saep Nua By Jao Tok Taek
A som tam shop reviews single out for deep, bold, rounded flavor and good service — a match for anyone who likes their tam heavy and full-on. There's a handful of Isan snacks to order alongside.
Larb Koi Soi Ju By Makoto Isan Classic
The real deal for larb and koi. If you're a duo who's into proper Isan-style raw meat, this place is on the mark — larb, koi and soi ju, eaten with sticky rice and fresh veg.
Khrua Isan
An in-town Isan spot that's easy to sit at and easy to reach — good for an ordinary meal when you just want som tam and grilled chicken without driving far. You can order Isan dishes to spec.
Pho Phet Mae Or (Jaew Hon)
A jaew hon and mu jum spot that also does pork larb, beef larb, tom saap and a thick tom yum. Good for a dinner where you want something warm by the pot with friends.
Som Tam Kamphaeng Taek
A som tam shop with an easy-to-remember name that people in town know. Good for a quick meal — order tam and grilled chicken to take away too. Friendly prices.
Kai Yang Phi Paew
A spot reviews praise for its grilled chicken and som tam in town. Good if you want the grilled chicken to be the star rather than the tam — easy to grab and bring back to your room.
How to order so it's worth it
With three or more people, order 1–2 plates of som tam, half a grilled chicken, plus one larb or tom saap, then add sticky rice per person — you'll get the full range without overloading the table. If you're not great with heat, tell the shop 'phrik noi' (less chili) when you order, because the Isan places here pound a fairly heavy hand.

Dishes you shouldn't miss
If it's your first time in Kamphaeng Phet and you're not sure where to start, these are the Isan dishes most shops do well and that rarely let you down.
- Som tam with pla ra — the shop's litmus test. If the fermented fish sauce is rounded and savory without a fishy edge, the kitchen knows what it's doing.
- Grilled chicken — order half a bird to share; the meat should be juicy, the skin fragrant from the fire, eaten with a sour-spicy jaew dip.
- Larb & koi — if you're into raw meat, try koi or soi ju at a dedicated larb shop; otherwise cooked pork or duck larb does the job.
- Tom saap — pork ribs or soft cartilage in a clear, sour-spicy broth that cuts through the richness when you're eating grilled chicken.
- Sun-dried pork / fried chicken — the snacks the kids at the table usually go for; order them for anyone who can't take the heat.
