This plan works best if you have your own car or a rental, because Erawan Falls sits about 65 km northwest of town. You can still do it without a car, but you'll need to rely on a minivan or a half-day tour. The key to doing Kanchanaburi in one day is leaving early: cover the history and the train in the morning, then give the whole afternoon to the falls, since the climb up takes a while.
The full-day route in order
Day 1
Morning — town, history, and the Death Railway
07:30
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (Don Rak)Right in the centre of town, near the train station. Open roughly 08:00–17:00, free entry. A clean, well-kept cemetery — 20–30 minutes is enough to understand the story behind the railway.
08:15
Thailand–Burma Railway CentreAcross from the cemetery. It's a privately run museum that tells the story of how the railway was built in real detail. Entry is around 160 THB. Skip it if you're short on time, but don't miss it if you care about the history.
09:00
Bridge on the River KwaiYou can walk across the actual steel bridge for free. Crowds are still thin in the morning, the light is nice, and photos are easy. Leave time to walk back and catch the train at River Kwai Bridge Station.
10:00
Death Railway ride, Bridge–Tham Krasae sectionThe tourist train leaves River Kwai Bridge Station around 10:00. Tickets are in the tens of THB for Thais, 100 THB for foreigners. The tensest stretch is when the train runs along the curved wooden trestle against the cliff face just before Tham Krasae — sit on the river side for the better view.
Day 1
Midday — Tham Krasae and lunch by the water
11:00
Tham Krasae (Tham Krasae Station)Hop off the train to visit the small cave shrine and walk the track along the cliff face — the well-known photo spot. Watch the train schedule and don't stand on the rails when a train is due.
12:30
Lunch by the River KwaiDrive back toward town or stop at one of the floating riverside restaurants around Tha Makham, like Keeree Tara or one of the floating spots with a bridge view. River fish and tom yum are the local specialties. Budget around 150–300 THB per person.
Tip along the way
The Death Railway runs only a few trains a day and the schedule can change. Check the latest times at the station or ask your hotel before you set out. If you miss the train, you can still drive along the route and photograph Tham Krasae on your own.
Day 1
Afternoon — Erawan Falls, the seven tiers
14:00
Arrive at Erawan National ParkAbout an hour and a half drive from town. Entry is 60 THB for Thai adults, 30 THB for children, 300 THB for foreigners, plus 30 THB for the car. The park opens around 07:30–16:00, but they close the upper tiers before closing time.
14:30
Hike up tiers 1–4 and swimTiers 2 and 3 have those emerald-green pools and you can swim — there are little fish that nibble your feet. The full climb is around 1,500 metres. Wear shoes with good grip and bring drinking water.
15:30
Start heading downRangers start clearing people off the upper tiers before 4 PM. Leave time to walk down, rinse off, and change clothes at the restrooms near the bottom.
16:30
Drive back to town / catch the riverside sunsetOn the way back you can stop at a café or a River Kwai riverside spot for the sunset. If you've still got energy, find somewhere in town for dinner.
🎟️Book the activities in your Kanchanaburi trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
🎟️ See all Kanchanaburi tours & activities (Klook) If you have even less time, what can you cut?
- No car — book a half-day tour combining Erawan and the Death Railway; it's a better use of time than waiting on public transport.
- Arriving late — drop the museum and just do the bridge, the train, and the falls. Those three are the core.
- Want a full swim — cut your time in town and head to Erawan by midday so you have time to walk all seven tiers.
- More into history than waterfalls — swap the afternoon for Hellfire Pass Memorial (free, open 09:00–16:00) instead of Erawan, but it's in a different direction and further out.
Straight talk
You really can hit all three highlights in one day, but the pace is tight. If you want to walk all seven tiers of the falls without rushing, or add Hellfire Pass and Sai Yok, staying one night is far more comfortable.
