Isan food in Kanchanaburi splits roughly into two lanes. The first is the spots in town and on the Tha Muang side, where working locals stop in for lunch or dinner — easy on the wallet, big bold flavors. The second is the riverside spots along the Kwai Yai River on the way up to Srinakarin Dam and Erawan Falls, where the draw is the water view and the cool breeze, charcoal-grilled chicken with hot sticky rice. Prices climb a little there depending on the location. We've ordered the list starting with the easy-to-reach spots in town, then worked our way out toward the falls.
Isan spots in town and on the Tha Muang side
Khun Jim Som Tam Kai Yang
A spot in central Kanchanaburi that locals are hooked on for its fragrant charcoal-grilled chicken and punchy som tam, all at friendly prices. The thing to know: it sells fast and closes early, so by mid-afternoon a lot of it is gone. If you want a table during the peak, call to reserve or get there before noon.
Je Tun Som Tam (Nong Suea, Tha Muang)
An old-school spot on the Tha Muang side that spread by word of mouth for grilled chicken with a clear charcoal scent and fragrant meat, plus som tam pounded fresh one mortar at a time — spicy and sharp but still balanced. Good for a stop on the way in or out of Tha Muang.
Tam Jeeb Rim Khlong (near Wat Tham Suea)
A canalside som tam spot on the Tha Muang side, near Wat Tham Suea, known for grilled chicken that moves several hundred skewers a day. The riverside seating is easygoing — a good place to pull over and eat after paying respects up at Wat Tham Suea.
Saep Saep Kanchanaburi
An Isan spot in town with a full menu — som tam, larb, tom saep and crispy pork belly — and flavors as bold as the name suggests. Good for a group of friends who want to order a bunch of things to share. Mid-range prices.
Yum Kamram (YUMKAMRAM)
A yum-and-som-tam spot in the market area, leaning into bold yum dishes and a wide range of tam. Good for anyone who likes sour-and-spicy up front — order it as a snack to drink with or as a meal with rice, either works.
What to know about grilled chicken
The best charcoal-grilled chicken spots grill in batches, so if you go in the late afternoon the chicken that's been grilled may be sold out and you'll wait around 20–30 minutes for the next batch. Calling ahead or ordering in advance is the safer bet, especially on long weekends.

Riverside spots on the Kwai Yai, on the road to the dam and Erawan Falls
The route from town up toward Si Sawat district, Srinakarin Dam and Erawan Falls has Isan spots strung along the Kwai Yai River in clusters. The draw is sitting down to som tam and grilled chicken with a view of the water and the mountains. Prices nudge up a bit from in-town spots depending on the location and the setting, but if you plan to stop on the way to the falls it's a worthwhile meal.
Phi Joh Tam Lan Khuean
An Isan spot on the Kwai Yai River around Si Sawat, near Srinakarin Dam and the road to Erawan Falls. The water view is lovely, and the standouts are som tam, grilled chicken, grilled pork neck and sun-dried pork that go down easy with sticky rice. Reviews mention it often for anyone stopping to eat along the way.
Dan Kak Lao Branch 9
An Isan spot around the River Kwai Bridge, leaning into grilled dishes and a wide range of Isan plates with bold, fiery flavors. Good for a dinner after strolling the River Kwai Bridge area, before moving on or heading back to your hotel.
Som Tam Lan Khwam Suk (Hua Na Bon)
A spicy-style som tam spot around Hua Na Bon, where locals drop in for bold tam and grilled chicken. The vibe is homey and laid-back, prices are easy on the wallet — a good pick for a simple meal as you drive through.
Baan Kong Krua Rim Nam
A riverside spot serving both Thai and Isan dishes, good for families who want to sit comfortably with a view. Order som tam, larb and river-fish dishes to share around. Prices run higher than your typical roadside stall since it's leaning on the setting.
TaTuan garden
A garden-style som tam spot outside town, open and shady, with some unusual tam on the menu like lotus-flower tam and salted-egg corn tam. Good for anyone who wants to try a new style of tam in a relaxed setting. Easygoing prices.
Planning meals around a waterfall trip
If you're set on going to Erawan Falls, eat your main meal before heading up to the falls or once you've come back down — the spots inside the park are limited and it gets crowded around midday. The riverside spots along the Kwai Yai on the way are better suited to a dinner on the way back.
How to order for a full Isan spread
- Som tam — if you can take the heat, say how spicy when you order. Pla ra fans should try the fermented-fish version; if pla ra isn't your thing, order tam Thai or the blue-crab version instead.
- Grilled chicken — a half or whole bird is better value than ordering by the piece. Eat it with sticky rice and the spot's jaew dipping sauce.
- Larb, nam tok, tom saep — pork or beef larb and tom saep help cut the richness. Order them to share around the group and you'll be set.
- Snacks to nibble — sun-dried pork, grilled pork neck and crispy pork rinds are the drinking snacks most Isan spots in Kanchanaburi have.
A lot of roadside Isan spots take mostly cash and may not hold tables in advance. If you're going as a group or heading out on a long weekend, call to check the spot is open and still has grilled chicken — it'll save you a wasted trip.
