Kanchanaburi–Ratchaburi
3-Day Road Trip

Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi sit right next to each other — about an hour apart by car — yet plenty of people visit just one and head home, when pairing the two in a single trip is easy. This plan walks you through old riverside markets, takes you down into a stalactite cave, and wraps up at a river cafe, all timed so you can drive it yourself without rushing.

🚗 Self-drive, 3 days🛶 Floating + old markets🦅 Khao Bin Cave
Kanchanaburi–Ratchaburi 3-Day Road Trip

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

This trip starts in Kanchanaburi and then drifts south to Ratchaburi. The two town centers are about 80–90 km apart, roughly an hour and a half of driving. It suits anyone with their own car, since many of the stops are outside town and hard to reach by public transport. If you don't have a car, you can rent one in Kanchanaburi town and return it at the same spot at the end of the trip.

Day 1 — Kanchanaburi: the bridge, the railway, and the riverside

Day 1

Start in Kanchanaburi town

08:30
Arrive at the Bridge on the River Kwai and walk across the real steel bridgeGo early — fewer people, softer sun, and easier photos than mid-morning.
10:00
Stop at the Hellfire Pass Memorial or the Allied War Cemetery — pick oneIf you want to understand the story behind the Death Railway, Hellfire Pass tells it best.
12:00
Lunch at a riverside restaurant along the River Kwai in townThere are several floating riverside restaurants — settle in, catch the breeze, and take your time.
14:30
Relax at a River Kwai cafe to escape the afternoon heatThe River Kwai road area has plenty of river-view cafes — grab a seat facing the water.
17:30
Check in to a riverside stay and catch the sunsetA riverside room on the first night is worth it for the atmosphere — you'll wake up to a light mist over the water.

Day 1 tip

If you're coming by train, try the Kanchanaburi–Nam Tok stretch. It runs along a wooden trestle hugging the cliff face at Tham Krasae — the prettiest part of the whole line. There are only a few trains a day, so check the schedule before you go.

Set off from Kanchanaburi toward Damnoen SaduakThe floating market is liveliest in the early morning — go late and the boat vendors start packing up.
08:30
Walk the Damnoen Saduak floating market and take a paddle-boat tour of the canalsThe market trades from about 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Take a boat in the morning for the full floating-market atmosphere, and always agree the boat price before you get on.

What to know about the floating market

Damnoen Saduak has been a tourist spot for a long time and draws plenty of international visitors, so prices here run higher than at an ordinary market. If you want better deals, walk into the back lanes or buy from vendors away from the main photo spots.

Day 3 — Into Khao Bin Cave, then head home

Day 3

Wrap up with a stalactite cave

08:30
Drive from Ratchaburi town to Khao Bin Cave on the Ratchaburi–Chom Bueng roadThe cave is about 20 km from town — go early while the air inside is still cool.
09:00
Head into Khao Bin Cave and walk its 8 chambers of stalactites and stalagmitesEntry is around 20 THB and a local guide walks you through. Wear shoes you can climb stone steps in — some sections get slippery.
11:00
Stop at Khao Ngu Stone Park to see the hermit cave and the cliff-carved BuddhaIt's a fairly steep stair climb. If you're up for it, you'll get a view over the town from the hilltop; if not, skip it for a coffee instead.
12:30
A final lunch in Ratchaburi townStock up on souvenirs — mini earthenware jars, woven textiles, or local snacks — before you leave.
14:00
Drive back to Bangkok, about 100 km from Ratchaburi, roughly an hour and a halfLeaving in the afternoon helps you dodge some of the evening holiday traffic on the way back.

FAQ

Is it worth visiting Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi in one trip?

Yes. The two town centers are only about 80–90 km apart — an hour and a half of driving — so it's easy to combine them into a 2–3 day self-drive trip. You get the River Kwai riverside, a floating market, an old market, and a cave all in one go.

Can I do this trip without my own car?

You can, but it's a hassle. Stops like Khao Bin Cave and the field-side cafes are outside town and out of reach by public transport. The easiest option is to rent a car in Kanchanaburi town and return it there, or hire a car with a driver by the day.

What time should I go to Damnoen Saduak floating market?

Early morning, around 8:00–10:00 a.m., is best. The market trades from about 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and in the morning there are still plenty of vendor boats around for the full floating-market atmosphere. Go later and the boats start heading back.

Is Khao Bin Cave hard to walk? Is it suitable for older visitors?

The cave has stone steps and ramps, and some sections get slippery. The full walk covers about 8 chambers. Older visitors who can manage stairs should be fine, but take care and have someone to lean on. Khao Ngu Stone Park has steeper stairs, so it's easy to skip that part if it's too much.

What time of year is best for this route?

November to February is cool and comfortable — walking the markets and going into the cave won't be too hot. In the rainy season the cave can get slippery and the rice fields turn lush and green, but watch the forecast. In the hot season, start early and save the cafes for the afternoon.
