Two branches of the River Kwai run through Kanchanaburi, so most restaurants cling to the bank or are built as rafts that stick out over the water. The two things people hunt for are raft spots where you can sit with your feet in the river, and places that look out on the Bridge on the River Kwai once the lights come on. We've split them into clear groups so you can pick based on what your day looks like.
Floating rafts where you can dangle your feet in the water
These are the places where the raft actually juts out into the river. Some have seating where you can soak your feet, or hammocks to lie back in. Good for a day when you want to settle in for the long haul, late afternoon into the evening.
Phae Hoi Kha Pa Chill (Det Thosaphak Restaurant)
A legendary raft restaurant in Kanchanaburi town. The raft floats out over the river, with a zone where you can dangle your feet in the water and hammocks for lounging and photos. The food is seasonal Thai — wild curry, green curry with mushrooms — and you can sit for hours. Locals like to come around dusk once the sun has softened.
Coco River Kwae
A riverside spot in the Tha Makham area that goes all in on atmosphere. You can see the railway bridge over the river at sunset, there's live music, and the menu runs to Thai dishes like crab fried rice and seafood glass-noodle salad. It's an evening-only place, so it suits a special dinner rather than lunch.
Khrua Ton Mae Klong
A riverside Thai restaurant in the Ban Tai area. The draw is the raft seating that floats right at water level. The mood is easygoing and it's open from late morning through the evening, so it works for an unhurried lunch.
When to go
Feet-in-the-water raft spots tend to get hot in the afternoon because the sun reflects off the river. If you want to sit comfortably, aim for around 4:30–5:00 pm — you'll catch the cooler light and the sunset. In the rainy season the water can run muddy and fast, and some places close their feet-in-the-water zones temporarily, so it's safer to call ahead.

Riverside spots with a view of the Bridge on the River Kwai
If you want to eat with the Bridge on the River Kwai as your backdrop, this group sits in the Tha Makham and Ban Tai areas near the bridge — ideal for a dinner where you're after a good photo.
Keerithara Riverside
Bali-style decor on the banks of the Khwae Yai river, just about 50 metres from the Bridge on the River Kwai, with a clear view of the river's bend at sunset. The food is Thai and the mood is romantic; it's open all day into the night, so it suits a special meal or an occasion.
The Floating Restaurant
A food raft near the bridge in the Tha Makham area. The cooking is homestyle Thai — tom yum, salads, fish curry — at friendly prices, and it's open from morning to evening, so you can come for either lunch or dinner. Good for anyone who wants to sit on the water without paying a lot.
Bai De River
A riverside spot in the Tha Makham area, open evenings into the night only. The Thai food is boldly seasoned, so it suits people who want to settle in for a long evening of eating and drinking. The vibe is laid-back and the prices aren't steep.
Riverside spots where the food is the point
Some people come to the river to eat well rather than to take photos. This group is the one locals rate for the cooking, with everything from wild-style dishes to fresh seafood.
Krua Chuk Donn
A riverside Thai restaurant in the Ban Tai area known for its seafood. The dishes people order most often are grouper fried with fish sauce, sizzling-pan clams, and tom yum goong — full-flavoured cooking in the local style. Open from late morning to evening, and a bit later on weekends.
Taraburee
A traditional Thai restaurant in the Ban Nuea area on Song Khwae road. The standouts are the spicy salads, wild chicken curry, and river-fish dishes — proper old-school Thai flavours. Open from late morning until midnight, so it works for a long, slow dinner.
Rice Barge
A riverside spot in the Tha Makham area known for its tamarind dishes, like grouper fried with tamarind sauce and tamarind chilli dip. Evening only, with a quiet, calm setting that suits a dinner where you're there to eat seriously.
Pla Kanchan Lock Home
A wild-food and river-fish restaurant in the Pak Phraek area, set beside a canal with a shady, natural feel. Open from morning to evening, it's good for anyone who wants to try wild-style dishes and fresh freshwater fish at a table right by the water.
Straight talk before you go
A lot of riverside spots only open in the evening (from 17:00 onwards), so if you're planning lunch, aim for places that open earlier, like The Floating Restaurant or Khrua Ton Mae Klong. Opening hours and which riverside seating is available can shift with the season and the water level. During festivals it gets busy and the riverside tables fill up fast, so call ahead to book if you want a good view.
How to pick the right spot for your day
- Want to dangle your feet in the water — Phae Hoi Kha Pa Chill or Khrua Ton Mae Klong, go from late afternoon into the evening.
- Want a photo of the River Kwai bridge — Coco River Kwae or Keerithara, go at sunset.
- Big group, here for the food — Krua Chuk Donn, Taraburee, or Pla Kanchan Lock Home; order seafood and wild dishes to share.
- On a budget — The Floating Restaurant or Bai De River are easier on the wallet.
