Khao Kho Weekend Itinerary
Driving from Bangkok, Saturday–Sunday

Khao Kho is about a 5–6 hour drive from Bangkok, too far for a there-and-back day trip but just right for a two-day, one-night escape. Leave Saturday morning, spend a night up on the mountain, wake up to the sea of fog on Sunday, then drive home at an easy pace. This is an hour-by-hour plan built for a relaxed trip with no rushing, but you still get the views, the cafes, and the food.

Khao Kho Weekend Itinerary Driving from Bangkok, Saturday–Sunday

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Khao Kho sits in Phetchabun province, and it is an easier mountain to drive than most people expect: wide roads, clear signs, and plenty of stops along the way. The nice thing about doing it over a weekend is that you don't have to take time off work. Leave Saturday morning, head home Sunday evening, and you still get the cool air, the sea of fog, and the mountain-view cafes. This plan is built for people driving themselves for two days and one night, with a rhythm that lets you actually visit places rather than just drive past them.

Before you set off: the route and what to pack

There are a few ways up to Khao Kho from Bangkok. The most popular is Highway 21 (Saraburi–Phetchabun), passing through Si Thep and Wichian Buri districts, into Phetchabun town, then turning up the mountain at the Na Ngua junction onto Highway 2258. The total distance is roughly 440–460 km, about 5–6 hours of relaxed driving including rest stops.

  • Fuel / tolls — fill the tank before heading up. Petrol stations on Khao Kho are few and close early.
  • Brakes — the climbs and descents have steep grades and lots of curves. If you drive an automatic, use a low gear (L or 2) going downhill instead of riding the brake.
  • Warm clothes — in the late-rains-to-early-cool season (Nov–Jan), mornings and nights really do get cold, around 10–18°C.
  • Book accommodation ahead — view rooms fill up fast on weekends, especially in the cool season. Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance.

When's the best time to go

If you want a thick sea of fog, go in the late-rains-to-early-cool season (October–January) for the best odds of high fog. The rainy season (Jun–Sep) also brings fog after the rain, but you risk getting caught in rain while driving. In the hot season the views are green but the fog is thin.

About where to stay

Accommodation on Khao Kho is spread across zones. Some sit right on the main road and are easy to reach; others are tucked deep on the hills with great views but steep drives up. If you're not used to mountain driving at night, pick a place that's easy to get in and out of first, then drive out to explore during the day.

Day 2 — Sunday: morning sea of fog, then drive home

Day 2 (Sunday)

Wake early for the fog, see the remaining sights, then head back to Bangkok

05:30
Wake up for the fog viewpointThe sea of fog is at its best around 5–6 a.m. Drive to a viewpoint near your stay, or if you can manage the longer drive, head to Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaeo on the fog-facing side.
07:30
Back for breakfast at your stayThe morning air is cool and pleasant — have a hot coffee with the view, then pack up.
09:00
Wat Phra That Pha Son KaeoA hillside temple decorated with colored tiles and tiered Buddha images — one of Khao Kho's best-known spots. Go early before the crowds build.
10:30
Khao Kho Royal Palace / wind turbine fieldsThe palace sits high with 360-degree views, and nearby are the wind turbine fields and seasonal flower fields — great for photos.
12:00
Lunch + a farewell cafeStop at a restaurant or a cafe you didn't make it to yesterday, and grab your last shots before heading down.
13:30
Start the drive down and back to BangkokUse a low gear going down, retrace the same route, and aim to reach Bangkok by evening. Leaving early afternoon helps you avoid some of the Sunday-evening traffic on the way back.
19:00
Arrive in BangkokBuild in 1–2 rest stops along the way — not driving the whole way in one go is safer.

What to know before driving up Khao Kho

Driving

Use a low gear going downhill

Don't ride the brake the whole way down — it overheats and stops gripping. Use gear L/2 to slow yourself instead.

Preparation

Patchy mobile signal

Some zones on the mountain have weak phone signal. Load your map and destinations ahead of time before heading into the deeper areas.

Safety

Fog can cover the road in the morning

Thick morning fog cuts visibility short. Switch on fog lights or low beams, drive slowly, and keep your distance from the car ahead.

Want to add a day at Phu Thap Boek

If you have more than two days, you can add Phu Thap Boek (Phetchabun's highest point at 1,768 m). But the road up Phu Thap Boek is very steep and narrow, suited to people confident with mountain driving or to taking a local pickup up to the summit. Driving it yourself isn't recommended if you're not used to it.

FAQ

How many hours is it to drive from Bangkok to Khao Kho?

The distance is about 440–460 km, and relaxed driving with rest stops takes around 5–6 hours. The popular route is Highway 21 through Saraburi–Phetchabun, then turning up the mountain at the Na Ngua junction onto Highway 2258.

Is 2 days and 1 night enough for Khao Kho?

It's enough for the main highlights. Leave Bangkok Saturday morning, reach the mountain by afternoon for the views and cafes, stay one night, then on Sunday morning see the sea of fog and visit Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaeo and the royal palace before driving home. If you want to add Phu Thap Boek, make it 3 days.

When's the surest time to see the sea of fog at Khao Kho?

The late-rains-to-early-cool season, roughly October to January, gives the best odds of a thick sea of fog, especially in the early morning between 5 and 6 a.m. The air is pleasantly cool in this stretch too.

Can a sedan make it up Khao Kho?

Khao Kho itself has wide, well-paved roads, so a sedan handles it easily — just watch the curves and use a low gear on the way down. Phu Thap Boek, on the other hand, is far steeper and narrower; if you're not used to mountain driving, take a local pickup to the summit instead.

Do I need to book accommodation ahead for a weekend trip?

You should, especially in the cool season when good-view stays fill up very fast. Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance and pick a room facing the valley view — that's the best value.
