Khao Yai
3 Days, 2 Nights for Every Traveler

Khao Yai is the kind of place where you can do completely different things in one trip. Wake up and hike to a waterfall in the national park in the morning, spend the afternoon feeding sheep and shooting photos in a European-style village, then sip wine among the vines come evening. This 3-day, 2-night plan paces things so you're not rushing, and we're upfront about entry fees, distances, and what to watch for on the forest roads.

Khao Yai 3 Days, 2 Nights for Every Traveler

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Khao Yai sits in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 2.5–3 hours' drive from Bangkok (roughly 180 km via the Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok route, Highway 305 onto Highway 33, then up Thanarat Road). The sights split clearly into two zones: inside Khao Yai National Park (waterfalls, viewpoints, hiking) and outside the park along Thanarat Road (sheep farm, European villages, wineries, Farm Chokchai). This plan keeps the first day to the sights outside the park on the way up, gives the second day fully to the park, and closes with Farm Chokchai on the last day before heading home.

Read before you go

Thanarat Road lines its attractions up by kilometre marker (km) — Sheep Land is at km 4, for example, while the park entrance is at the far end of the road. Ordering your stops by km marker means no backtracking. If you're coming on a long weekend, book accommodation ahead, because it fills up fast and traffic builds in the evenings.

Day 1 — Cruising Thanarat Road: sheep farm + European villages

There's no need to rush into the park on day one. Pick off the easy roadside stops along Thanarat Road that work for kids and adults alike — a good fit for a day when you're still tired from the drive.

Day 1

Sheep farm and European-style photos

08:00
Leave BangkokSet off early to dodge the outbound traffic; grab breakfast or coffee around Pak Chong on the way.
11:00
Check in / drop your bagsMost places only check in from the afternoon, but you can usually leave your bags early and head out hands-free.
12:00
Lunch around Pak ChongPlenty to choose from — steakhouses, made-to-order Thai spots, or cafés along Thanarat Road.
13:30
Sheep Land sheep farm (km 4)Entry around 40 THB, feed the sheep and shoot photos across the fields. Open roughly 09:00–18:00, with a café area to take a break.
15:30
Primo Piazza Tuscan-style villageEntry around 100 THB (adult), which includes one feed pack for the sheep/alpacas. There's pizza with a mountain view.
17:30
Palio Italian village (free entry)Wander, take photos, and browse the coffee shops, food and souvenir stalls. Nice in the late-afternoon light.
19:00
Dinner + back to your roomTake care driving back after dark — some stretches of road around Khao Yai are unlit and have plenty of bends.

Tip

Sheep Land, Primo Piazza and Palio are all close together on Thanarat Road, so you can do them back-to-back in an afternoon without moving zones. Entry prices can change, so check each place's official page before you go.

Day 2 — A full day in Khao Yai National Park: Haew Suwat & Haew Narok

This is the main day of the trip — give it fully to Khao Yai National Park. The park is large and the roads are winding, so slow driving is normal. Going in early means better weather and a better chance of spotting wildlife.

Day 2

Hiking and chasing waterfalls

07:00
Leave your room, enter the park checkpointEntry for Thai adults 40 THB, children 20 THB, car 30 THB (foreign adults 200 THB).
08:30
Viewpoint / visitor centreStop to check the map and trail routes, and find out which waterfalls are open. Restrooms are here.
09:30
Pha Kluai Mai trail to Haew Suwat WaterfallA nature trail of about 3 km round trip; the waterfall is roughly 20 m high. The path gets slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good grip.
12:00
Lunch break (bring your own / park eatery)Food options inside the park are limited, so it's easier to bring water and snacks in the car.
13:30
Haew Narok WaterfallA big, multi-tiered falls with a viewpoint. It's gorgeous when the water's high, but mind the railings and the path — don't cross into restricted areas.
15:30
Wildlife tower / viewpoint before eveningLate afternoon you've a chance of seeing deer, and sometimes wild elephants foraging along the road. Watch from a safe distance and never feed them.
17:00
Leave the park, back to your roomUse low gear driving downhill in the evening, watch for animals crossing, and don't honk to scare them off.

An honest note about the park

Phone signal drops out in patches inside the park, the roads twist up and down the mountain, and wildlife really does cross the road. Drive slowly and switch your lights on where the signs warn you to. Wild elephants are the locals here — if you meet one on the road, stop and wait at a distance, cut the engine if you need to, and never approach or feed them. After rain the waterfalls are beautiful but the rocks are slick, so step carefully.

Day 3 — Winery in the morning, finishing at Farm Chokchai

On the last day, pick off the two sights that are signature Khao Yai — the vineyard winery and Farm Chokchai — then drive back in the afternoon to avoid the evening crawl back into Bangkok.

Day 3

Wine tasting and a cattle-farm tour

08:30
Check out, hit the roadGet everything packed into the car — you're not coming back to the room today.
09:15
Winery tour: PB Valley or GranMontePB Valley runs a tour of about 75 min with a tasting of 3 wines, from around 450 THB/person, with a morning slot at 09:15. GranMonte is the vineyard of Thailand's first female winemaker. Book both ahead.
11:30
Lunch at the vineyard restaurantBoth vineyards have restaurants with vine views — a good spot to linger before moving on.
13:00
Farm Chokchai (tour slot)The farm tour runs around 120 THB for adults, 70 THB for kids. Open roughly 09:30–16:30, with timed milking and cowboy shows. Book ahead on weekends.
15:30
Souvenirs + drive homePick up fresh milk, steaks and souvenirs around Pak Chong, then drive back — you'll reach Bangkok in the evening.

Tip for the last day

Farm Chokchai's interior is visited on a guided tour, not a free walk-in, so check the tour times and book online ahead — especially on weekends and long holidays. As for the winery tours, if you're planning to actually taste the wine, have a driver who isn't drinking.

Rough budget per person

  • Khao Yai National Park entry — Thai adult 40 THB + car 30 THB/vehicle (foreigners 200 THB)
  • Sheep farm + European villages — around 140–200 THB total (Sheep Land ~40, Primo Piazza ~100, Palio free)
  • Winery tour — from around 450 THB/person (includes a tasting of 3 wines at PB Valley)
  • Farm Chokchai — farm tour around 120 THB for adults, 70 THB for kids
  • 2 nights' accommodation + food + fuel — varies by how nice your room is; budget some extra and book ahead in high season

All prices are approximate, based on the latest information, and can move up or down with the season and any promotions. Check each place's official page again before you set off.

Tweak this plan to suit you

Family

Travelling with family / young kids

Add more time at the sheep farm and Farm Chokchai, cut the long hikes, and pick waterfalls with short walks so the kids don't burn out.

Hiking

Serious nature lovers

Give two full days to the park, add the Kong Kaew trail or a night wildlife drive, and trim the sights outside the park.

Relaxed

Couples / café crowd

Lean into the wineries, mountain-view cafés and European villages, and pop into the park for just a half day to catch the standout waterfalls.

FAQ

Is 3 days and 2 nights enough for Khao Yai?

It's comfortably enough to cover both the national park and the sights outside it. This plan gives the first day to the sheep farm and European villages, a full second day to the park and its waterfalls, and the last day to a winery and Farm Chokchai before heading home. If you want to hike several trails, just add a day.

How much is entry to Khao Yai National Park?

Thai adults 40 THB, children 20 THB, and 30 THB per car. For foreigners it's 200 THB for adults and 100 THB for children. The entry fee covers you for the whole day inside the park.

What should I watch for driving inside Khao Yai National Park?

The roads twist up and down the mountain and wildlife genuinely crosses them — especially wild elephants from late afternoon into the evening. Drive slowly, use low gear on the descents, and if you meet an elephant on the road, stop and wait at a distance: never approach or feed it, and don't honk to scare it off. Phone signal drops out in patches.

Do I need to book Farm Chokchai and the wineries ahead?

You should. Farm Chokchai's interior is visited on a guided tour rather than a free walk-in, and it fills up fast on weekends and long holidays. Winery tours like PB Valley run on fixed time slots, so booking ahead is the safer bet.

Are the waterfalls nice in the rainy season at Khao Yai?

In the rainy season the water's high and falls like Haew Suwat and Haew Narok are at their best — but the paths and boulders get very slippery, so wear shoes with good grip and step carefully. Don't cross into restricted areas or swim where officials have closed it off.
