If this is your first time in Khon Kaen, the good news is that it's an easy place to visit. The main sights in town sit close together, getting from the airport into the city is cheap and quick, and there's great food to try all day long. We've answered the questions first-timers usually get stuck on β how to get here, which area to stay in, what to eat β right through to a ready-made 1-3 day plan.
How to get to Khon Kaen, and what the trip from the airport costs
Khon Kaen is the hub of central Isan, and there are several ways in. Flights from Don Muang or Suvarnabhumi take about an hour and land at Khon Kaen Airport, which is only around 6 km from the city. The northeastern rail line passes through too, and intercity coaches pull into Bus Terminal 3 (the third bus station) daily.
- Flying β Khon Kaen Airport is right by the city. You can get into town on the Airport city bus for roughly 15-40 THB, or take a taxi/Grab for around 100-150 THB.
- Coach β You'll arrive at Bus Terminal 3, the main station these days, on the edge of town. From there, take a songthaew (shared pickup) or a Grab into the center.
- Train β Khon Kaen station sits right in the middle of town, so you can walk or hop on a songthaew from there. A good option if you enjoy the train ride.
- Driving yourself β From Bangkok it's about 6-7 hours up the Mittraphap highway, handy if you want to stop in a few provinces along the way.
First-timer tip
If you land and you're in a hurry, Grab is the easiest call. But if you've got time and want to save, the city bus from the airport into town is a steal β a few dozen baht gets you to the Bueng Kaen Nakhon area.
Book the activities in your Khon Kaen trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want β prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Which area to stay in, and how to get around town
Central Khon Kaen is easy to explore on foot. The area first-timers tend to like is around Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake and Si Chan Road, since it's close to food, markets, and the main sights. Cafe-hoppers and the student crowd usually head toward the Kangsadan district near Khon Kaen University, where there are loads of chill spots to sit.
- Songthaew β These shared pickups run several routes around town, with fares starting around 10-15 THB. Cheap, but you'll need to learn the routes a little.
- Grab/taxi β Easy to hail and good when you're rushed or out at night. Most trips around town run about 50-120 THB.
- Car/motorbike rental β Best value if you want to head out of town to Phu Wiang, Ubolratana Dam, or the king cobra village.
- Walking β The Bueng Kaen NakhonβWat Nong Waengβwalking street zone is all comfortably on foot in the evening.
What to see in Khon Kaen
Khon Kaen's sights split neatly into in-town and out-of-town. The in-town spots fit into half a day to a full day, while the out-of-town ones are worth a full day each if you have a car. Here's what first-timers shouldn't miss.
Wat Nong Waeng (Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon)
A 9-tier stupa on the edge of Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake. Climb to the top floor for a 360-degree view over the city and the lake β the check-in spot everyone in Khon Kaen ends up at.
Bueng Kaen Nakhon
A big public park right in the middle of town for strolling, cycling, or watching the sunset. In the evening locals come to exercise and there are snack stalls along the water.
Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum
Out in Wiang Kao district, about 1.5 hours from town, on a real Thai dinosaur excavation site. Great if you're traveling as a family.
Ubolratana Dam
A large dam with mountain views and a wide expanse of water β a good drive out to eat fish, sit on a raft, and catch the sunset. Half a day is about right.
Khok Sa-nga King Cobra Village
A village known for raising king cobras and for its human-and-snake shows. A quirky corner that foreign visitors tend to love.
Khon Kaen Walking Street
Wander and snack on Isan food, sweets, souvenirs, and craft goods in an easygoing town atmosphere. Only open on certain days, so check before you go.
How to pace it without wearing yourself out
If you have 2-3 days, alternate an in-town day with an out-of-town day. Don't cram two out-of-town spots into one day β they're far apart with little public transport, so you'll spend more time on the road than actually sightseeing.
What to eat in Khon Kaen β the Isan spots locals go to
If you've made it all the way to Isan, the food is the main reason. Khon Kaen is known for som tam, Khao Suan Kwang grilled chicken, punchy laab and koi, and hard-to-find Isan kitchen dishes like pak wan curry with red ant eggs. These are the places locals and reviewers mention often, ordered from the ones first-timers find easiest to try and least likely to be let down by.
Seri Kai Yang Khao Suan Kwang
A well-known Isan kitchen that celebrities check in at often, famous for hard-to-find dishes like pak wan curry with earthball mushrooms and red ant eggs, and red-ant-egg omelette, alongside som tam and grilled chicken that hold their own.
Por Sanan Laab Koi
A punchy laab-and-koi spot that does much more than laab β Lao-style som tam, grilled pork neck, beef ohm, tom saap, bamboo-shoot soup, and Khao Suan Kwang grilled chicken. One for the real Isan crowd.
Yai Phaeng Kai Yang Khao Suan Kwang
Right on the Mittraphap highway at a traffic-light junction. Fragrant grilled chicken, nicely tender, with full-flavored som tam β an easy stop to grab a bite as you drive past.
Kai Yang Khao Suan Kwang Ton Tamrap
Khao Suan Kwang-style grilled chicken, the signature dish of Khon Kaen β crispy skin, juicy meat, eaten with som tam and hot sticky rice.
A famous in-town som tam shop
A som tam spot that Khon Kaen locals queue for β tam thai, tam pla ra (fermented fish), tam sua β seriously spicy. Good for trying real Isan-style pla ra.
Moo kratha & jim jum near the university
A popular dinner for Khon Kaen students β student prices, a steaming hotpot, killer jaew dipping sauce, and you can sit and chat for hours.
Kuay jap & khao piak sen in the morning
An Isan-style breakfast β clear offal broth, or soft Vietnamese kuay jap noodles, eaten warm before you head out. Easy to find at the morning markets.
Mum & Isan sausage to take home
Mum and Isan sausage, fermented to a nicely sour tang, are a Khon Kaen signature. Buy some to snack on or carry home as a gift.
Straight up
Khon Kaen's Isan food is genuinely punchy, especially the pla ra. If you're not great with spice, tell the shop to ease up on the chili when you order, and taste the pla ra slowly first β no need to force it. Sticking to grilled and boiled dishes to start is totally fine.
Where the cafe crowd goes in Khon Kaen
Khon Kaen is a university town, so there are plenty of cafes and the scene moves fast. The area with the densest cluster of shops is Kangsadan, near Khon Kaen University β everything from quiet places to work to photogenic spots β plus Ton Tan Market, which has become a hub for a new generation of coffee shops.
Kangsadan district
The densest cafe cluster in the city β a few steps and you'll hit several shops, both serious-coffee places and chill hangouts. Good for working.
Ton Tan Market
Beyond the food, new-generation cafes keep opening here β a good spot to keep sipping coffee after a wander through the market.
Cafes by Bueng Kaen Nakhon
Lakeside spots for catching the breeze in the evening β a good way to wrap up the day after a walk around the lake.
A 3-day Khon Kaen itinerary you can actually follow
If it's your first visit and you have around 3 days, here's a plan that balances in-town, out-of-town, food, and cafes. Trim it down to 1-2 days to fit the time you have.
Cover the city
Head out of town to Phu Wiang
The dam, the views, and souvenirs
Adjust the plan to your time
Only here a day? Do all of Day 1. Got 2 days? Use Day 1 and Day 2. If you don't have your own car, on the out-of-town days it's easier to charter a Grab or rent a car with a driver than to wait on songthaews.
Mistakes first-timers tend to make
- Out-of-town distances are longer than you'd think β Phu Wiang and Ubolratana Dam are in different directions, so don't combine them in one day.
- Public transport out of town is scarce β if you're heading to an out-of-town spot, plan your transport ahead. Renting a car or chartering a Grab is the safer bet.
- The walking street isn't open every day β check the day before you go so you don't show up to nothing.
- Isan weather is hot and dry from March to May β pack water and a hat. The cool season at year's end is the most comfortable time to visit.
- Brace for the spice β real Isan spots go heavy on pla ra and chili, but you can always order it with less chili.
