What makes Koh Phangan special is how flexible it is. You can come to party all night, or come to find a quiet corner and fall asleep to the waves — all on the same island. This plan is built for travelers who want a taste of everything, and 4 days 3 nights is just about the right amount: not so rushed that you burn out, but enough to see the lively south, the calm north, and the wellness zone on the west coast.
Most trips start at Thong Sala pier, which is the main port, the market, and the hub of the island all in one. From there you fan out to each zone. Distances on the island aren't long, but some stretches of road are steep and full of sharp bends — and that really matters when you're planning how to get around.
Before you go — getting there and where to stay
Koh Phangan still has no airport, so you'll need to take a boat from Surat Thani or Koh Samui. The Lomprayah high-speed catamaran from Surat Thani runs around 350–450 THB per leg (transfers included in the package), while the Raja Ferry from Don Sak is cheaper at around 200 THB but takes longer, roughly 3 hours. If you're coming from Samui, the crossing is only 30–45 minutes.
- Pick your base by style — party people go for Haad Rin (Haad Rin), chill travelers pick the west coast around Ban Tai and Sri Thanu, and those after real quiet head north to Thong Nai Pan and Chaloklum.
- Rent a motorbike — from around 200 THB/day, available near the pier. It's the most flexible way to get around the island.
- Songthaew (shared pickup truck) — runs the main routes between Thong Sala, Haad Rin, Chaloklum, and Thong Nai Pan. Good if you'd rather not drive yourself.
- Taxis on the island have fairly fixed, high fares and are hard to haggle down — always write down the price before you get in.
On road safety
The roads toward Thong Nai Pan and some spots in the north are steep and get very slippery in the rain. If you've never ridden a motorbike on steep roads before, don't push it — take a songthaew or taxi, it's safer. Motorbike accidents are common on this island. Wear a helmet every time.
Book the activities in your Koh Phangan trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 — Arrival, Thong Sala, and the party south
Arrival · Thong Sala · Haad Rin
Party smart
The Full Moon Party is genuinely fun, but the "buckets" (mixed spirits in a small pail) hit harder than you'd think. Alternate with plain water, never leave your drink and come back to it, always wear shoes because there's broken glass in the sand, lock your passport in the hotel safe, carry only the cash you need, and arrange your ride back in advance. Don't ride a motorbike drunk.
Day 2 — Snorkeling Koh Ma, Mae Haad, and the west coast
Koh Ma snorkeling · Mae Haad · west coast
If you want deeper diving or to go further afield, there are boat tours from Koh Phangan out to Sail Rock (Sail Rock), one of the Gulf of Thailand's famous dive sites, plus tours to Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Tao. Full-day tours start around 1,800–2,200 THB per person (roughly USD 58–66) and usually include hotel transfers, lunch, gear, and a guide.
Sea safety
Always check the surf and currents before you get in, especially if you're not a strong swimmer. Wear a life jacket on boat tours, don't touch or step on the coral, and use reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the reefs.
Day 3 — Quiet north, waterfalls, and viewpoints
The north · waterfalls · viewpoints
Beyond Phaeng Waterfall, Koh Phangan has other falls worth a stop along the way, like Than Sadet Waterfall in the national park (with an easy enough trail to reach it) and Paradise Waterfall, if you have time to spare and love nature.
Day 4 — A wellness day in Sri Thanu before heading home
Yoga · healthy food · journey home
If you want to get serious about wellness, many centers in Sri Thanu run 3–14 day detox and yoga programs, starting around 13,000–14,000 THB per week (roughly USD 400–420) for a shared room, including yoga and meditation classes plus three plant-based meals a day. Private sea-view bungalows cost more. If this is your thing, you might extend the trip beyond 4 days.
Rough budget per person
- Round-trip boat — around 700–900 THB (from Surat Thani, return)
- 3 nights' accommodation — guesthouse/bungalow around 1,500–4,500 THB (swings with the season and Full Moon nights — to be honest, Full Moon nights are much more expensive)
- Motorbike rental for 3 days — around 600 THB plus fuel
- 1-day diving tour — around 1,800–2,200 THB (if you choose a boat tour)
- Food/drinks — around 1,500–3,000 THB for the whole trip, depending on how you eat
- Full Moon Party entry — 200 THB (Full Moon nights only)
All in, a budget version of this trip runs around 6,000–8,000 THB per person, and goes up depending on the accommodation and tours you pick. Room rates on the island swing a lot with the season — high season (December to April) and Full Moon nights are the priciest.
Food you shouldn't miss on the island
Phantip Night Market, Thong Sala
A night market in the heart of Thong Sala with dozens of local food stalls — grilled fish, southern curries, meatballs, fruit, sweets. The best place to start eating cheap and well on the island.
Beachlounge Thong Sala
A beachfront bar-restaurant in Thong Sala looking out at Koh Samui across the water, with fresh seafood, Asian fusion, and a solid cocktail and wine list. Great for a sunset dinner.
Seafood spots at Chaloklum Bay
Chaloklum is a fishing village in the north, and the seafood here is fresher and better-priced than in the tourist zones. A good lunch stop on the day you head north.
Health cafés in Sri Thanu
Sri Thanu has the island's densest cluster of vegetarian cafés, raw food, smoothie bowls, and herbal juices. Perfect for breakfast on your wellness day.
Ando Loco
A budget-friendly Mexican spot with burritos, tacos, and vegetarian options. Laid-back vibe — good for a casual dinner with a group of friends.
The Masons Arms
A proper English pub about 2.5 km north of Thong Sala pier, with a full pub menu, English beers on tap, an upstairs balcony, and a beer garden. Good for a chill night out without the heavy party scene.
