Koh Phangan's beach bars split clearly by zone, each with its own personality. Haad Rin in the south is the party and Full Moon hub — loud, dancing until dawn, fire shows. Srithanu–Srikantang on the west coast is the hippie and yoga zone, with live music and gentle sunsets. The west and north have hillside and beachfront bars that focus on quiet sunset views. This guide tells you which area each spot sits in, roughly when it opens, what the vibe is like, and whether it suits the kind of night you're after.
Pick a beach bar to match the night you want
- If you want a full-on party — head to Haad Rin. This zone packs in dance bars, fire shows and EDM DJs that go late, and it gets even busier the closer it is to the full moon — but expect big crowds and loud music all night.
- If you want to chill to live music — go to the Srithanu and Hin Kong side, the hippie zone, where bars host live sets and guitar/drum jams with a relaxed crowd of all kinds.
- If you want a quiet sunset — pick a west-coast bar facing Koh Tao, either on the hillside or right on the sand. Get there before 5:30 PM to grab a seat with a good view.
- Check opening hours before you go — many small bars only open on certain days or seasonally. During low season (roughly Oct–Dec) some close for a long stretch, so check their page or ask your accommodation first.
- Bring a torch / fully charged phone — the roads up to hillside or remote-beach bars are dark and rough, and some require a walk or a boat. If you're heading back late, have a light to find your way.

Ranking the 12 best Koh Phangan beach bars
Amsterdam Bar — hillside above Wok Tum / Hin Kong (west)
The legendary Phangan sunset bar, set on a rocky hill on the west coast facing the sea and Koh Tao. A wide terrace gives you a 180-degree view, with colourful hippie-style cushions and mellow tunes. People gather here in the late afternoon to wait for the sun to drop — arrive around 5:00–5:30 PM to get a seat right on the edge with the best view. Drinks are mid-priced. The road up is a steep hill, so ride your scooter carefully.
Zen Beach — Srithanu (west)
A small beach in the Srithanu hippie zone that's become the island's go-to sunset gathering spot. In the evening people play drums, perform live music, spin fire and do yoga on the sand. The vibe is free and laid-back, drawing a real mix of long-stay travellers, yogis and musicians. There's a small bar selling drinks and fresh coconuts, so you can sit on the sand and listen to the waves for hours. Good for anyone who wants an easy atmosphere over loud music.
The Jam Bar — Hin Kong (west)
A thatched bamboo bar on Hin Kong beach where the island's musicians come together. There are instruments you can pick up and jam on live — guitar, drums, bass — turning into an unscripted, genuinely fun night of live music. It's a good sunset spot with food and drinks that won't break the bank. It only opens on certain days (usually Thursday and Sunday evenings), so check the day before you go. Great for music lovers who want a friendly, casual vibe.
Seaside Sunset Bar — west side of Haad Rin Nok
A beach bar on the western side of Haad Rin that gives you both the sunset view and an easy, mellow tempo — far less manic than the party side. DJs take turns playing every evening, roughly 5:00–8:00 PM, with cocktails, Thai food and a happy hour early on. Good for anyone staying around Haad Rin who wants to sit with a drink and watch the sunset before heading out to the late-night party on the main Haad Rin strip.
Three Sixty Bar — north of the island, near Mae Haad
A hilltop bar in the north of the island looking down over Koh Ma and the Mae Haad sandbar from above. The daytime view of clear turquoise water is gorgeous, and at night it's peaceful — perfect for a cold drink or a fresh coconut (around ฿100) while you take in the easy view. It's not a party bar but one of the island's best-view rest stops for a drink. Come in the late afternoon through sunset for the best of it.
Secret Beach Bar — Haad Son / west coast
A quiet beach bar on the west coast with white sand and clear water, wooden swings in the sea and canvas day beds to lie back on. It plays soft music and serves cold drinks, and it's a popular sunset spot without the chaos. Good for couples or anyone wanting to escape the Haad Rin crowds — come in the afternoon for a swim and stay right through sunset. The entrance is fairly narrow, so drive in carefully.
Drop-In Bar — Haad Rin (party zone)
One of the main bars on Haad Rin beach, buzzing almost every night. It plays pop, EDM and dance, with fire shows and the mixed-spirit buckets that are the signature image of the Full Moon. The dance floor on the sand fills up, and on full-moon nights you can barely move. Good for anyone who wants to party flat out. Drinks lean toward buckets and beer, and prices jump hard on full-moon nights — keep an eye on your glass and your valuables.
Cactus Bar — Haad Rin (party zone)
A long-running Haad Rin beach bar and a meeting point for the Full Moon crowd. The music ranges across hip-hop and house, with a dance floor right on the sand, fire shows and a skipping fire rope. It buzzes from early evening until morning, and it's one of the bars people often meet at before scattering to others. Good for anyone who loves dancing and a packed party atmosphere — there's a crowd on normal nights too, no need to wait for the full moon.
Rasta Baby — central island / Haad Rin
A reggae-style bar with weekly live music, leaning into live rock and reggae. The vibe is more chilled than the EDM bars of Haad Rin — people sit, listen, sip a beer and sway to the beat. Good for anyone who prefers live music over DJs and wants a relaxed but still lively night. Check that week's live schedule before you go, since the playing days aren't fixed.
Eden Garden — Haad Yuan (reached by boat)
A garden party on Haad Yuan that you reach by longtail boat from Haad Rin. It runs a weekly party (usually Saturday nights) focused on psychedelic, trance and electronic music, set in a garden right by the sea with a niche crowd. People who want a genuine electronic-music party love it here. The key thing is the boat — check the return boat times carefully and don't miss the last one.
Thong Sala beachfront bars (in town)
In Thong Sala town near the pier there are several small seaside bars and easy-going drinking spots that aren't about partying. Good for anyone who's just arrived on the island in the evening, or who wants to sit with a cold beer and listen to the waves close to their room without driving far. Many have gentle live music in the evening and prices that are friendlier than the bars on the tourist beaches. You can walk from the Thong Sala night market.
West-coast resort beach bars (Ban Tai–Srithanu)
Many resorts along the west-coast beaches from Ban Tai to Srithanu have their own bars on the sand, open to non-guests. The atmosphere is calm, with canvas day beds, soft music and cocktails paired with the sunset. Good for anyone who wants to drink and chill without squeezing into Haad Rin — settle in for hours with the cool sea breeze. Drink prices vary with the resort's level, so it's fine to ask before you order.
How to time your night
Start the evening at a west-coast sunset bar (Amsterdam, Zen Beach, Secret Beach) around 5:00–7:00 PM, then move over to Haad Rin later if you want to party — that way you get both the view and the fun in one night. · If you'd rather not drive at night, stay near the area you plan to go out in, or use the island's taxis / motorbike taxis — safer than riding yourself after drinking.
The Full Moon Party and Haad Rin nights — know before you go
The Full Moon Party is held at Haad Rin every month on the night of the full moon (some months it shifts to dodge a Buddhist holy day or festival, so confirm the exact date before booking tickets). On that night Haad Rin fills with tens of thousands of people, every bar cranks the volume, and multiple DJ stages play EDM, techno, reggae and hip-hop, with fire shows, skipping fire ropes and mixed-spirit buckets sold all along the beach. If you're set on coming for the full moon, book your accommodation several weeks ahead — rooms fill fast and prices swing up hard, and some places require a multi-night minimum stay. On normal non-full-moon nights the Haad Rin bars are still open with smaller crowds, which makes for an easier and cheaper night out.
- Haad Rin entry fee on full-moon night — there's a beach entry fee of around ฿100–200 per person on party night, so carry some cash.
- Clothes and shoes — wear shoes you can slip off easily or sandals with a heel strap; there can be broken glass on the beach, so watch your feet. Body paint is fun, but pick the kind that washes off easily.
- Valuables — bring only what you need, use a crossbody bag or leave things in your accommodation's locker. It's very crowded and things go missing easily.
- Plan your way back — agree on a meeting point with friends, save your accommodation's number, and know the route home before you start drinking.
Drink responsibly and get everyone home safe
A night out on the island can be a great time if you look after yourself. We'll be blunt about safety because it genuinely matters — party hard, but make sure everyone makes it back.
- Drink responsibly and know your limit — mixed-spirit buckets are stronger than you'd think because they combine several spirits. Pace yourself, alternate with water, never accept a drink from a stranger, and don't leave your glass unattended.
- Don't go swimming drunk — currents and waves are invisible and genuinely dangerous at night. Drowning accidents do happen during parties — save your swimming for daytime when you're sober.
- Look after your valuables — keep your phone, passport and money safe and use your accommodation's locker if there is one. Crowded nights are when things go missing most easily.
- Ride your scooter carefully — many stretches of road on the island are steep with hairpin bends, especially the routes to Haad Rin and the hillside bars. Always wear a helmet, never ride after drinking, and remember it's riskier in the dark. Take an island taxi or motorbike taxi instead.
- Go in a group and watch out for each other — agree on a meeting point, save each other's numbers, and if someone's had too much, take them home. Don't leave anyone on their own.
- Budget extra for accommodation on full-moon nights — room prices swing up hard and some places enforce a multi-night minimum. Honestly, your budget for that period will be very different from a normal night, so planning ahead helps you keep it under control.
Honest note on seasons and prices
During high season (roughly Dec–Apr) and every night near the full moon, the bars are buzzing, the crowds are big, and room and drink prices go up. · During the low monsoon season (roughly Oct–Dec) some small bars close for a long stretch and the sea is rough on some days, but it's quieter and cheaper. · Many small bars only open on certain days or change their schedule often, so always check their page or ask your accommodation before heading out, and don't count on exact times.
