Koh Phangan West Coast Beaches
Sunsets, Clear Water & Quiet Stays

If the east side around Haad Rin is Koh Phangan's party scene, the west coast is the side people come to and end up staying for ages — long stretches of sand, calm water, and a sunset straight ahead every single evening. It's lined with health cafes, yoga spots, and beachfront stays that are far quieter than the rest of the island. We've pulled together Haad Yao, Haad Son, Srithanu, Zen Beach and Hin Kong, with honest notes on the tides, getting around, and room rates that swing with the season.

Koh Phangan's west coast faces out over the Gulf of Thailand, which means every evening you get the sun dropping straight into the sea — no islands in the way. The water here is calmer than over at Haad Rin, clear through high season (roughly mid-December to April), and the vibe is a lot more laid-back. Most people who come this way are here to slow down, do yoga, or stay long-term on the island. The trade-off: when the tide goes out hard, the water pulls a long way from shore, and you'll be walking a fair bit before it's deep enough to swim. That's just how this side works — checking the tide table before you plan a swim helps a lot.

Haad Yao — long sweep of sand, a reef, and sunset views

Haad Yao sits on the northwest of the island — a long, gently curving stretch of fine white sand that's easy to get into the water from, and one of the most swim-friendly west coast beaches in high season. The bit a lot of people love is the fringing reef about 300–400 metres offshore: snorkel out and you'll spot parrotfish, schools of blue fish, and sometimes a blue-spotted stingray cruising the edge of the coral. The north end of the beach usually has the clearer water.

Behind Haad Yao there's a ridge that's the easiest-to-reach viewpoint on the whole west coast, looking out over the sea, the valleys, and a panoramic sunset. Stays here run from beachfront bungalows up to boutique places on the hill with the better views — good if you want a quiet beach but still want a few restaurants and convenience stores around.

  • Swimming & snorkeling — clear water in high season, reef 300–400 m offshore, north end clearer. Bringing your own mask is easier than waiting to rent one
  • Low tide — the water pulls a fair way out at strong low tide, normal for the west coast. Check the tide table first
  • Getting there — about 15–20 min from Thong Sala pier by motorbike or taxi. February–March in high season has the clearest water

Haad Son (Secret Beach) — a small, quiet cove for a private sunset

Haad Son, which a lot of people call Secret Beach, is a little cove tucked between rocks and trees. It's not actually secret anymore, but it still feels more private than the bigger beaches — soft sand, clear water, and an easy-going mood that's perfect for nursing a cold drink while you wait for the sunset. It sits right next to the Haad Yao–Srithanu zone, just a short ride further on the motorbike.

Worth knowing

The last stretch of the road into Haad Son is a steep incline, and parts of it are dirt. If you're not used to riding a motorbike on steep ground, take it slow or park and walk down — it's safer. Don't push it in the rain, because it gets slippery, and there are only a few beachfront places, so bring your own water.

Srithanu — soft sand and the island's yoga & wellness hub

Srithanu is a soft, fine-sand beach with shallow, calm water and fewer people than its neighbour Zen Beach. The feel is local and relaxed, and what really sets this area apart is the yoga and wellness community — the strongest on the island. The beach is ringed with seaside cafes serving smoothie bowls, fresh coconuts, and vegan menus. This is the area people settle into for months at a time.

One thing to know: Srithanu has a fairly strong low tide, and at the lowest point swimming gets a bit awkward — though you can still wade in the shallows or stroll the shoreline. In the evening, the curve of Srithanu beach catches the sunset over the Gulf of Thailand beautifully. It's the spot for people who want to slow right down: wake up, do yoga, eat clean, and end the day with the sunset.

Zen Beach — the most famous sunset spot on this coast

Zen Beach (also known as Ao Niad) is in the Srithanu zone, about 5.5 kilometres north of Thong Sala, and it's the west coast's best-known sunset beach. Every evening people gather to wait for the light, with acoustic musicians, yoga, and folks meditating on the sand — the spiritual vibe of the Srithanu area is on full display here.

The highlight is Friday night, when there's usually a drum circle on the beach — musicians grouping up to play drums and guitar, and some nights a fire show. People come to watch the sunset with live music in the background. The hub of the beach is Grasshopper Beach Bar, a rustic spot that doubles as the meeting point, with Thai food, fresh fruit shakes, cold beer, and cocktails that won't break the bank.

Drink with your wits about you + watch your valuables

The atmosphere is fun, but don't forget to keep it in check — keep your bag, phone, and valuables close at all times. If you're heading into the water in the evening, bring a friend and don't go far from shore; the sea is hard to read in low light. Riding back to your stay after dark, take the motorbike slow, because the roads on this side are dark and there are steep stretches.

Hin Kong and the overlooked middle stretch

Just south of Srithanu is Hin Kong, a long, quiet beach with few people — good if you want a pretty sunset without the crowds of Zen Beach. Stays and restaurants are spread out loosely around the beach, and it's closer to Thong Sala than Haad Yao, so popping into town for the evening market or to grab supplies is easy. It's a well-balanced spot for anyone who wants quiet but doesn't want to be too far from the action.

On room rates — straight up

Room rates on this side swing hard with the season. In low season (May–October, especially the rainy stretch) prices drop and you can negotiate. In high season and on full moon nights, rates climb and places fill up very fast — some set a multi-night minimum around the full moon. If you've got your eye on a full moon night, book a month or more ahead.

Getting around and staying safe on the west coast

  • From Thong Sala pier — Haad Yao is about 15–20 min, Srithanu/Zen Beach about 5.5 km to the north, Hin Kong is closer to town
  • Motorbike — the easiest way around, but some access roads (especially Haad Son) are steep and dirt. Wear a helmet and ride slow in the rain
  • Taxi/songthaew — pickup services run here, good if you don't ride a motorbike. Agree on the price before you get in
  • Tides — the west coast has a strong low tide, so check the tide table first if you're set on swimming. The water's easier at high tide

FAQ

Which west coast beach on Koh Phangan has the best sunset?

Zen Beach in the Srithanu zone is the best known for sunsets — every evening people gather to wait for the light, with acoustic music, and Friday nights usually bring a drum circle on the beach. Haad Yao also has a ridge viewpoint with a panoramic sunset. If you want it quieter, try Hin Kong.

Can you swim on the west coast, and is the low tide really that strong?

Swimming is good in high season, especially at Haad Yao, which is easy to get into the water from and has a reef for snorkeling. But the west coast does have a fairly strong low tide — at the lowest point the water pulls a long way from shore, especially at Srithanu. Check the tide table and come at high tide.

Is Secret Beach (Haad Son) hard to get to?

It's not actually secret anymore, but it's still quiet and private. The last stretch of the road in is a steep incline and partly dirt. If you're not used to riding on steep ground, go slow or park and walk down. Don't push it in the rain because it's slippery, and there are only a few beachfront places, so bring your own water.

Who is Srithanu best for?

It suits people who want to slow right down, and the wellness crowd. This area has the strongest yoga community on the island, and the beach is ringed with cafes doing smoothie bowls, fresh coconuts, and plenty of vegan menus. It's quiet — good for long-stayers or couples who want a private getaway.

Are west coast stays expensive?

There's everything from budget wooden bungalows to beachfront boutiques. Prices always swing with the season — cheaper and negotiable in low season, but in high season and on full moon nights rates go up and fill fast. Some places set a multi-night minimum around the full moon, so book ahead.
