Lamphun is only about 30 minutes from Chiang Mai, so plenty of people drive over for a morning-to-evening cafe day trip. The charm here is the slower pace: cafes aren't packed the way Nimman gets, and you get both old-town spots in buildings with a bit of history and rice-field cafes where you can sit watching the green for an hour. We ranked these on atmosphere, coffee quality and real reviews — not just on which place happens to be more famous.
How to read this ranking
The order reflects the overall mix (atmosphere + coffee + quiet), not a fixed verdict on which cafe is objectively best. Each one has a different strength, so pick based on whether you want old town, rice fields, or serious coffee.
10 Lamphun cafes worth your time
Temple House Lamphun
A cafe right in the old town on Inthayongyot Road, a few minutes' walk from Wat Phra That Hariphunchai. It's an old house given a warm, low-key makeover, with seating both indoors and in a small garden — perfect for a stop after morning prayers. The coffee is made with care and the bakery is homemade.
SIP WHISPER
A newer cafe out by the rice fields, homey and surrounded by greenery and paddy. It's quiet and easy to settle into for a long morning or evening, and it's the spot people looking for a rice-field cafe in Lamphun mention most often.
Yann
A vintage rooftop cafe in central Lamphun with a view over the old town. The look is relaxed and retro, there are plenty of photo corners, and it suits younger crowds and remote workers wanting a chill spot. Closed Wednesdays.
Black to Basic
A black, bare-concrete cafe on Chaimongkol Road near Wat Phra That Hariphunchai — coolly understated, with its own bakery recipes and a wide drinks menu. It opens early, so it's good for a stop before you head out to explore the town.
View Doi
A garden-house cafe set in a date-palm grove around the edge of Ban Hong and Wiang Nong Long districts — fresh, shady and relaxing. The standouts are the date-palm coffee and date-palm smoothie, which are hard to find elsewhere. Good for a quieter drive a little farther out.
SUKSUD
A homey Japanese-style wooden-house cafe in Ban Don Luang, Mae Raeng subdistrict, Pa Sang. The draw is the homemade gelato and ice cream, starting at ฿40 a scoop. It sits in the Don Luang handwoven-cotton area, so you can pair it with a village visit.
Lapuné Cafe
A rustic Japanese-style cafe with a shady garden and lots of seating options, from cool air-conditioned rooms to camp chairs under the trees. Great if you want to sit for a long stretch with no rush.
Malila Cafe & Restaurant
A clean, white-toned spot on the ring road in the moat area, no more than a 10-minute walk from Wat Phra That. It does desserts, drinks and full meals, so it's good for lingering across mealtimes. Closed Wednesdays.
Hom Cafe
A simple, minimalist cafe not far from Wat Phra That, with a small garden corner to catch the breeze. It focuses on drinks and desserts and works well for a short break while you explore the town. Closed Mondays.
Aq Bur Old Town
A cafe in the old-town heart of Lamphun, just past the governor's residence on the right before the post office. Its standout is staying open until 9pm — handy if you want a late-evening cafe, which is rare in a town this small.

Half a day with a local who knows the lanes — or cooking a dish yourself — teaches you more than just eating. Book ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide.
Old-town cafes within walking distance of the temple
If you park near Wat Phra That Hariphunchai and go on foot, the old town around it has several cafes within walking distance. The charm is that you get to see the old buildings, the city wall, and Lamphun's slow rhythm of life along the way.
- Temple House Lamphun — a renovated old house on Inthayongyot Road, the closest to the temple, ideal for a sit-down after visiting.
- Black to Basic — black, bare-concrete on Chaimongkol Road, opens early for a coffee before you explore.
- Aq Bur Old Town — open until 9pm, your go-to for an evening cafe in town.
- Malila / Hom Cafe — in the moat area, under a 10-minute walk from the temple, good for lingering.
Old-town tip
Several old-town cafes have a weekly day off (for example closed Wednesdays or Mondays). Check the hours on the cafe's page before you set out, especially if you're coming mid-week, so you don't make the trip for nothing.
Rice-field cafes: quiet spots out of town
One thing Lamphun still has that's getting harder to find in Chiang Mai is cafes in the middle of the rice fields that are genuinely quiet. Drive just over ten minutes out toward Pa Sang or Ban Hong and you'll find spots where you can sit looking at green paddy without the crowds. The fields are at their greenest from the rainy season into early cool season (June–November).
SIP WHISPER
A homey rice-field cafe surrounded by trees and paddy — quiet and easy, ideal for a long morning or evening.
View Doi (Ban Hong)
A garden house in a date-palm grove with a hard-to-find date-palm coffee, good for a peaceful drive farther out.
Lapuné Cafe
A rustic Japanese-style garden with camp chairs under the trees, where you can catch the breeze all day.
On hill coffee and the quiet
Lamphun doesn't grow as much of its own coffee as the hills around Chiang Mai, but plenty of cafes here use northern hill beans (Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai) that they roast and brew themselves. If you take your coffee seriously, try a pour-over or espresso to taste the bean. And if you're after quiet, the out-of-town spots — rice-field or garden cafes — deliver it better than in-town places on weekends.
- Want serious coffee — pick in-town cafes that focus on coffee, like Temple House and Black to Basic.
- Want quiet — head out of town to the rice fields or garden cafes, like SIP WHISPER, View Doi and Lapuné.
- Want dessert / ice cream — SUKSUD (homemade gelato) or Malila, which has a big sweets menu.
When the fields are green
If you want photos of bright-green paddy, come from the rainy season into early cool season (around June–November). After the harvest the fields are left as stubble and the scene looks different, so it's worth checking the timing with the cafe's page first.
