Ask anyone in Lopburi where to go for a spicy meal and you rarely get a single answer, because each neighborhood has its own regular. Some swear by the cockle som tam in town, others will happily drive out to Khok Samrong for the old-school grilled chicken. So we've ordered this list by popularity and convenience: starting with the easy-to-reach places in town, then working out to the spots beyond the city that are worth the drive.
Isan restaurants in Lopburi town
Som Tam Tha Sala (Thai E-Saan Able)
An in-town Isan spot people talk about a lot, in the lane in front of Phra Narai School near Big C. The dishes regulars keep ordering are cockle som tam, tom super, and herbal grilled chicken — properly bold, real Isan flavors. Roomy and good for groups.
Pong Larb Yasothon
An air-conditioned Isan restaurant in the Khao Sam Yot area on Phraya Phichai Dap Hak Road. The standout is Yasothon-style larb, koi and nam tok with a well-balanced, savory kick. Tam pu pla ra is 50 THB a plate, tam pa 72 THB, fried pork 80 THB — under 100 THB a head, good value, and a cool place to sit.
Larb Yaso Krua Klang Thung
A roadside spot on the bypass, just before Robinson Lopburi. It's an open-air place with a field-side feel and a full Isan menu — som tam, larb, tom saap. Plates start at 50 THB and come in generous portions. Meat lovers go for the larb and nam tok, which hit hard.
Tam Steak Lopburi
A hybrid spot serving both Isan food and steak under one roof, near the gate arch of Wat Thanon Khae beside the transport office. It's perfect for a group that mixes som tam-and-larb people with steak people. Som tam, larb and nam tok are cheap, and steaks start at 39 THB a plate — so nobody has to argue about where to eat.
Saap Loei Lopburi
A long-running Isan spot in the town center with all the basics — som tam, larb, koi — and a consistent hand. Good for a simple lunch or dinner without driving far. Open from late morning through the evening.
How to order it just spicy enough
Isan places in Lopburi go fairly heavy on pla ra (fermented fish sauce), the traditional way. If you want it milder, say "just a little chili, just a touch of pla ra" when you order, because the standard at many spots really is intense. And order the grilled chicken together with your som tam so they come out at the same time — they're best eaten together while still hot.

Half a day with a local who knows the lanes — or cooking a dish yourself — teaches you more than just eating. Book ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide.
Out-of-town spots worth the drive
If you have the time and don't mind the distance, several old-school Isan places outside town taste better and feel more relaxed — especially around Khok Samrong, right on Phahonyothin Road, which you'll pass anyway on the way to Wat Khao Wong Phrachan.
Som Tam Sor Mueang Phon (Khok Samrong)
A long-established spot on Phahonyothin Road in Khok Samrong district, about 29 km from town. It's known for grilled chicken with a killer dipping sauce, and it holds a provincial Q mark. The standouts are the grilled chicken, soft-bone tom saap, and Isan sausage. Reviews run as high as 4.8 out of 5, and you pass right by on the way to Wat Khao Wong Phrachan.
Roadside Isan stalls around Khok Samrong
Besides Sor Mueang Phon, the Phahonyothin stretch through Khok Samrong has several other roadside som tam stalls — small shacks where drivers passing through stop in regularly. Som tam, grilled chicken and sticky rice make a full meal on the cheap. Better as a stop along the way than a destination in itself.
Neighborhood som tam regulars
Every community around Lopburi tends to have its own go-to som tam stall — one that isn't on any map but that the locals eat at every day. The tell is a place that's packed in the early evening with grilled chicken laid out at the front. If you see that, just stop in. Home-style flavors and the lightest prices on this list.
Isan dishes to order in Lopburi
- Cockle som tam / tam pu pla ra — bold and traditional, found at nearly every spot, and the dish you order first to open the table.
- Grilled chicken — many places in Lopburi grill it themselves out front; Sor Mueang Phon holds a Q mark. Ordered with som tam and sticky rice, it's the standard meal.
- Larb · koi · nam tok — meat lovers shouldn't skip these; the Yasothon larb spots get the seasoning right. Ask for it cooked if you're not used to raw koi.
- Tom saap / tom super — slurped hot to cut the richness; Sor Mueang Phon's soft-bone tom saap is one regulars order again and again.
- Isan sausage — a tangy house-fermented snack eaten with fresh ginger and bird's-eye chilies, perfect to take the edge off while you wait for the mains.
Good to know before you go
Many Isan places in Lopburi take cash mainly, or transfers via PromptPay, so keep some cash on you. Out-of-town spots like Sor Mueang Phon close on Mondays, so check the day before you drive out — and the well-known grilled-chicken places often sell out in batches, so if you arrive in the late afternoon you may have to wait for the next round.
