🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The charm of Lopburi Old Town is that everything is clustered in one area. Get off the train at Lopburi Station, walk out, and Phra Prang Sam Yot is right in front of you, with King Narai's Palace and Vichayen House just a short stroll beyond — only a few minutes' walk. When you tire of the ruins, there are cafes tucked along the way the whole time, from house-roastery coffee shops around Tha Hin to vintage cafes ringing Sa Kaeo Circle. So this trip suits anyone who wants both the history and a chilled-out spot to sit, all in one day.

Before you set off

Lopburi has a lot of monkeys around Phra Prang Sam Yot and San Phra Kan. Take off your glasses, keep plastic bags and food well out of sight, and don't walk around holding a bag on display — the monkeys grab faster than you'd think. Several of the historic sites also close Monday–Tuesday, so check the days carefully before you plan your trip.

Day 1 — Walking the Old Town with Tha Hin cafe stops

Day one focuses on the Old Town zone around the train station, the heart of Lopburi in King Narai's era. Get up a little early so you can walk before the sun gets harsh, then work in the cafe stops through late morning into the afternoon.

How to walk it without wearing out

The whole area is walkable within a few minutes, but Lopburi gets hot in the middle of the day. Bring a hat and water, walk in the morning and late afternoon, and use the cafes as your midday shade break — you'll last longer without getting worn out.

How to get to Lopburi Old Town

The easiest way is the train from Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) to Lopburi Station, which takes about 2–3 hours. Walk out of the station and you're right at Phra Prang Sam Yot — no transfers needed. If you drive yourself, you can park in the Old Town, but parking gets pretty tight on holidays. Best to park once and walk, since the sights are all close together.

FAQ

How many days do you need for Lopburi Old Town?

If you focus on the main ruins — Phra Prang Sam Yot, King Narai's Palace and Vichayen House — you can do it on foot in a single day. But if you want to stop at several cafes and sit around without rushing, 2 days is just right: ruins on day one, cafes and the remaining spots on day two.

What are the opening hours and ticket prices for Lopburi's ruins?

Phra Prang Sam Yot is open daily 08:30–17:00, 10 THB for Thai nationals. Vichayen House is open Wed–Sun 08:30–17:00, also 10 THB. King Narai's Palace is a national museum, so check its closing days first, as several sites close Monday–Tuesday.

Where are the cafes in Lopburi Old Town?

They cluster in two main zones: the Tha Hin area next to King Narai's Palace, with Mikka Coffee Roasters doing its own roasting, and around Sa Kaeo Circle, with Balance Brew Coffee, Lunar Fuchsia, Jungle Cafe and Chao Doi Coffee — all within easy walking distance.

Do you need a car to visit Lopburi Old Town?

Not really. The sights in the Old Town are all within walking distance of each other. Take the train from Bangkok to Lopburi Station and you can walk straight into sightseeing. If you drive yourself, it's best to park once and walk rather than hunting for parking over and over.

Lopburi has lots of monkeys — is the Old Town dangerous?

There really are a lot of monkeys, especially around Phra Prang Sam Yot and San Phra Kan. But as long as you don't walk around showing off food or plastic bags, take off your glasses and keep valuables well out of sight, you can sightsee as normal. The monkeys are more interested in food than in people.
