We've paced it so you don't have to rush: drive the famous 762 curves with time to stop, stay overnight in Pai, then catch Tham Lod early on day two before the drive back. This is a plan you can follow straight away, with rough costs included.

Mae Hong Son 2 Days 1 Night Pai–Pang Mapha–Tham Lod

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

A proper Mae Hong Son trip really wants 3–4 days, but if you're short on time the Chiang Mai–Pai–Pang Mapha–Tham Lod stretch is the best value the province has. It all sits on one road, Highway 1095, so you never have to drive into Mae Hong Son town itself (another 2 hours further on). This plan suits people driving their own car or renting one in Chiang Mai. If you don't drive you can take the minivan, but you'll have less freedom to stop for photos.

Route overview and costs

Chiang Mai to Pai is about 130 km on Highway 1095, the road famous for its 762 curves. The minivan takes around 3 hours; driving yourself, allow 3–4 hours because you'll stop along the way. From Pai on to Tham Lod and Pang Mapha is another 50 km or so, nearly an hour and a half on winding road. That's why this plan has you stay one night in Pai, so you're not stuck doing the whole drive in one tiring go.

  • Chiang Mai–Pai minivan — Prempracha Transport runs roughly hourly from about 06:30–17:30, around ฿150 per trip.
  • Car rental in Chiang Mai — small cars from about ฿900–1,300/day. If you're not used to mountain curves, pick an automatic and give yourself extra time.
  • Tham Lod — the bamboo raft plus a lantern guide runs about ฿450–550 per raft (seats around 4), so splitting it beats going solo.
  • Where to stay in Pai — riverside guesthouses from about ฿500–800, rice-field-view resorts from about ฿1,200 up.
  • Total per person — budget style for 2 days 1 night is roughly ฿2,000–2,800 (not counting fuel if you drive yourself).

Pick the right season

Tham Lod is open year-round, but to see all three chambers (Pillar Cave, Doll Cave, Spirit Coffin Cave) you need the dry season, November–May. In the rainy season the water inside rises and sometimes only one chamber is accessible. The Pang Mapha sea of fog is at its best in the cool season, late in the year into early the next.

Day 1 — Chiang Mai to Pai, stopping all the way

Day 1

Chiang Mai → Pai

07:30
Leave Chiang Mai on Highway 1095Setting off a bit early gives you time to stop and dodges the busier midday minivans. By minivan, book the 07:30–08:30 departure.
09:30
Stop at the Huai Nam Dang viewpoint (a little off the main road)If you left early and it's the cool season you can catch the sea of fog. If it's late and the fog has lifted, skip it for a roadside cafe instead.
11:00
Arrive in Pai, check in, drop your bagsMany places let you leave luggage before check-in time. Just ask, so you can head out and explore light.
12:00
Yunnan lunch at Santichon villageThe Yunnan Chinese cultural centre, with mantou buns, Yunnan-style pork knuckle, flower tea, and a Chinese earth-wall corner for photos.
14:00
Wat Nam HuAn old Pai temple home to Luang Pho Un Mueang, a Buddha image said to seep water from its head. Quiet, few visitors, calm atmosphere.
15:30
Pai Canyon (Kong Lan), waiting for late lightNarrow rock ridges to walk along over a valley view, one of Pai's standout sunset spots. Watch the cliff edges; closed-toe shoes feel safer.
17:30
Stop at the Tha Pai historic bridgeAn old WWII-era steel bridge over the Pai River, lovely in late-afternoon light, just before you reach the town centre.
19:00
Pai Walking Street, dinnerFood lines the whole street from early evening: street food, desserts, and laid-back sit-down spots. Easy to just graze your way along.

About motion sickness

The 762 curves are no joke. If you get carsick easily, take a tablet half an hour before you set off, sit up front, look at the horizon, and keep a bag handy. The midday leg in strong sun feels worse than the cooler morning.

Day 2 — Pang Mapha, Tham Lod, then back

Day 2

Pai → Tham Lod → back

07:00
Morning coffee with rice-field views in PaiThe cafes set among the fields around Pai open early. In the cool season you'll see fog drifting over the paddies before the long drive.
08:30
Leave Pai for Pang Mapha on Highway 1095Check out first and pack up, because today you'll be making the long drive back to Chiang Mai in the afternoon.
09:30
Stop at the Kiu Lom viewpoint before Pang MaphaA roadside rest stop looking out over layered mountains. Early and in the cool season you'll still catch a thin sea of fog.
10:30
Reach Tham Lod, buy tickets and wait for a raftOpen roughly 08:00–16:30. Arrange a local guide at the service centre; raft plus lantern guide runs about ฿450–550 per raft.
11:00
Raft into Tham Lod, walk the 3 chambersPillar Cave has huge stalactites and stalagmites, Doll Cave has ancient rock paintings, and Spirit Coffin Cave holds traces of old wooden coffins. Allow about 1.5–2 hours.
13:00
Lunch at a community shop by Tham LodLocal shops near the entrance serve rice and curry and noodles at down-to-earth prices. Fill up before the long drive.
14:30
Head back to Chiang MaiAllow 4 hours including breaks. If you're in a hurry, skip the stops, and take extra care driving the curves after dark.
18:30
Back in Chiang MaiIf you'd rather take it easy, stay another night in Pang Mapha or Pai and drive back the next morning instead.

Ban Ja Bo, if you have time

If you leave Tham Lod early and aren't rushing back, stop at Ban Ja Bo, a Lahu hilltop village with a famous noodle shop where you dangle your legs over a mountain view. It's past Pang Mapha toward Mae Hong Son, but if you have to be back in Chiang Mai the same day, you may not have the time.

Can you do it without driving yourself?

Yes, but you'll need to plan around the transport schedule. Take the Chiang Mai–Pai minivan first, then in Pai rent a motorbike (about ฿150–250/day) or hire a local driver to Tham Lod and Pang Mapha as a day trip out and back. Some guesthouses run half-day Tham Lod tours you can book on the spot. This suits people who'd rather not drive the 762 curves themselves. If you're not a confident motorbike rider, though, we wouldn't suggest riding all the way to Tham Lod, since the road is steep with plenty of curves.

FAQ

Can you fit Pai, Pang Mapha and Tham Lod into Mae Hong Son in 2 days 1 night?

Yes, if you pace it so you stay one night in Pai. Spend the first day on Pai's sights, then on day two get up early, run out to Tham Lod and Pang Mapha, and head back. The one rule: don't try to cram in everything. Pick the spots you genuinely like and it'll be more fun.

How much does Tham Lod cost, and do you need a guide?

Tham Lod requires a bamboo raft and a guide carrying a lantern to light the way, since it's dark inside. The raft plus guide is about 450–550 THB per raft, seating around 4 people, so a group splits it more cheaply. Open roughly 08:00–16:30.

When is the best time to visit Tham Lod?

The dry season, November to May, when you can see all three cave chambers. In the rainy season the water inside rises and sometimes only one chamber is open. If you also want the Pang Mapha sea of fog, the cool season from late in the year into early the next is best.

Can you do this route without driving yourself?

Yes. Take the Chiang Mai–Pai minivan for around 150 THB, then in Pai rent a motorbike or hire a local driver to Tham Lod. Some guesthouses have half-day tours to book. You'll just have less freedom than driving yourself when it comes to stopping for photos.

How long is the drive from Chiang Mai to Pai?

About 130 km on Highway 1095 with its 762 curves. The minivan takes around 3 hours; driving yourself, allow 3–4 hours because of the stops. If you get carsick easily, take a tablet before you leave and sit up front.
