A proper Mae Hong Son trip really wants 3–4 days, but if you're short on time the Chiang Mai–Pai–Pang Mapha–Tham Lod stretch is the best value the province has. It all sits on one road, Highway 1095, so you never have to drive into Mae Hong Son town itself (another 2 hours further on). This plan suits people driving their own car or renting one in Chiang Mai. If you don't drive you can take the minivan, but you'll have less freedom to stop for photos.
Route overview and costs
Chiang Mai to Pai is about 130 km on Highway 1095, the road famous for its 762 curves. The minivan takes around 3 hours; driving yourself, allow 3–4 hours because you'll stop along the way. From Pai on to Tham Lod and Pang Mapha is another 50 km or so, nearly an hour and a half on winding road. That's why this plan has you stay one night in Pai, so you're not stuck doing the whole drive in one tiring go.
- Chiang Mai–Pai minivan — Prempracha Transport runs roughly hourly from about 06:30–17:30, around ฿150 per trip.
- Car rental in Chiang Mai — small cars from about ฿900–1,300/day. If you're not used to mountain curves, pick an automatic and give yourself extra time.
- Tham Lod — the bamboo raft plus a lantern guide runs about ฿450–550 per raft (seats around 4), so splitting it beats going solo.
- Where to stay in Pai — riverside guesthouses from about ฿500–800, rice-field-view resorts from about ฿1,200 up.
- Total per person — budget style for 2 days 1 night is roughly ฿2,000–2,800 (not counting fuel if you drive yourself).
Pick the right season
Tham Lod is open year-round, but to see all three chambers (Pillar Cave, Doll Cave, Spirit Coffin Cave) you need the dry season, November–May. In the rainy season the water inside rises and sometimes only one chamber is accessible. The Pang Mapha sea of fog is at its best in the cool season, late in the year into early the next.

Day 1 — Chiang Mai to Pai, stopping all the way
Chiang Mai → Pai
About motion sickness
The 762 curves are no joke. If you get carsick easily, take a tablet half an hour before you set off, sit up front, look at the horizon, and keep a bag handy. The midday leg in strong sun feels worse than the cooler morning.
Day 2 — Pang Mapha, Tham Lod, then back
Pai → Tham Lod → back
Ban Ja Bo, if you have time
If you leave Tham Lod early and aren't rushing back, stop at Ban Ja Bo, a Lahu hilltop village with a famous noodle shop where you dangle your legs over a mountain view. It's past Pang Mapha toward Mae Hong Son, but if you have to be back in Chiang Mai the same day, you may not have the time.
Can you do it without driving yourself?
Yes, but you'll need to plan around the transport schedule. Take the Chiang Mai–Pai minivan first, then in Pai rent a motorbike (about ฿150–250/day) or hire a local driver to Tham Lod and Pang Mapha as a day trip out and back. Some guesthouses run half-day Tham Lod tours you can book on the spot. This suits people who'd rather not drive the 762 curves themselves. If you're not a confident motorbike rider, though, we wouldn't suggest riding all the way to Tham Lod, since the road is steep with plenty of curves.
Stay by the Pai riverside
Guesthouses on the Pai River, walking distance to the Walking Street, good for budget travellers who want to be central.
Stay among the rice fields, out of town
Resorts set in the fields around Pai. Wake up to drifting fog and quiet, but you'll need a vehicle to get into town.
