This trip suits anyone who wants both merit-making and nature in one go. Driving yourself is easiest since the stops are spread out, but if you don't have a car there are vans and trains to connect the dots. The main decision is whether to sleep in Nakhon Pathom and do Kanchanaburi as a day trip, or move over and stay riverside in Kanchanaburi instead. We went with the latter so we could be at the falls early, before the crowds.
Trip overview and distances
- Bangkok → Nakhon Pathom — about 60 km, 1–1.5 hr depending on traffic
- Nakhon Pathom → Kanchanaburi (town) — about 65 km, around 1 hr; the open sections of the M81 motorway cut the time down
- Kanchanaburi town → Erawan Falls — about 65 km, 1–1.5 hr into Si Sawat district
- Overnight — 1 night by the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi town, roughly halfway
Before you set off
Erawan Falls is inside a national park, so there's an entry fee, and weekend mornings get very busy. If you want it quiet and open, aim to be at the gate before 9am, and check whether it's a high-water or low-water period. The rainy season has fuller, prettier water but the paths get slippery.
Book the activities in your Nakhon Pathom trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 — Temple-hopping in Nakhon Pathom
Temples, good food, sleep in Kanchanaburi
Day 2 — Erawan Falls and the Death Railway
Swim at the falls, ride the cliffside railway
About Hellfire Pass
The Hellfire Pass Memorial is free to enter, open 09:00–16:00, with a walking trail along the old railway cutting. In 2026 there's an annual maintenance closure from 4–24 May, so if you plan to stop, check the date first. And if day two is running tight, it's fine to skip it and save it for next time.
Rough budget (2 people)
- Fuel/transport — about ฿1,000–1,500 round trip from Bangkok if you drive, depending on the car
- 1 night riverside — from about ฿800–2,500 per night depending on the standard and the view
- Erawan Falls entry — there's a park fee for people and the car, so allow a few hundred per group
- Death Railway — tickets run from tens to a few hundred baht per person depending on the stretch and seat class
- Food — about ฿150–400 per person per meal, including souvenirs from Nakhon Pathom and Kanchanaburi
- Rough total — a 2-day, 1-night trip for 2 people comes to about ฿3,500–6,000 depending on your style
Can you do it without your own car?
You can, but you'll need to plan around the schedules more. From Bangkok there are vans and trains to Nakhon Pathom and on to Kanchanaburi. Within Kanchanaburi town there are songthaews and motorbike taxis. Erawan Falls is far from town, though, so people without a car usually book a half-day tour or hire a car with a driver for the day. It works out cheaper and you won't be sweating the timing of the last ride back.
Sleep in Nakhon Pathom, day-trip Kanchanaburi
Good if you're on a budget. You catch only the Kanchanaburi highlights in a single day, but it's more tiring and more rushed.
Move over and stay riverside in Kanchanaburi
The plan we recommend. Wake up early to swim before the crowds, and the riverside setting makes the overnight worth it.
