Nakhon Sawan — or Pak Nam Pho as old-timers call it — has been a Chinese trading hub since the days junks sailed up the Chao Phraya River. Descendants of Hainanese, Teochew, and Cantonese families have lived along the water here for generations, and one of the clearest legacies is the food. Two one-plate dishes stand out in particular: chicken rice cooked in chicken fat and ginger until fragrant, and braised duck simmered slowly in Chinese spices until the meat turns tender and soaks up the flavor.
What makes this town interesting is that most shops are family-run, open for decades, focused on doing one thing well. They open early and sell until they close in the afternoon, though a few stay open late into the night. We walked the in-town neighborhoods and pulled together 8 shops still open today from real reviews, ordered by how easy they are to reach and how often people mention them. We're not crowning anyone the best, because every household here has its own regular spot.
What is Hainanese chicken rice, and why is Pak Nam Pho known for it
Hainanese chicken rice differs from the everyday version because the rice is cooked in chicken stock with chicken fat and crushed ginger, which leaves it glossy and fragrant. The chicken is poached just until the meat stays juicy and the skin turns clear. The dipping sauce is the other star — fermented soybean or soy sauce mixed with ginger, garlic, and chili. Each shop has its own sauce recipe that regulars remember by taste. Pak Nam Pho has so many of these shops because of its Hainanese-Chinese roots, where families have sold chicken rice since the grandfather's generation.
Order like a regular
If you want a bit of everything on one plate, ask for the "mixed plate" (khao man ruam) — poached chicken, braised duck, and crispy pork all together. Plenty of shops do it but never put it on the sign, so just ask.

8 braised duck + chicken rice shops in Nakhon Sawan town
Ordered by how easy they are to find in town and how often people talk about them. Prices are rough ranges from recent reviews — expect them to creep up a little with ingredient costs.
Ko Tee Hainanese Chicken Rice (Matuli Road)
The first name Pak Nam Pho locals think of for Hainanese chicken rice. Fragrant rice, firm poached chicken, and a punchy ginger-soybean dipping sauce. You can get poached chicken, fried chicken, red pork, or crispy pork, and order them all on one mixed plate. The original came over from Uthai Thani before opening in Nakhon Sawan town, and there are now several branches, including Dreamland and V-Square mall.
Je Tai Chicken Rice, the old shop (Kat Aphai)
A longtime shop in the Kat Aphai market area, selling chicken rice and poached chicken for years. This is where people in town stop for breakfast before work — tender chicken, rice that isn't greasy, and easy prices. Good if you want a genuine local shop rather than a mall one.
Midnight Chicken Rice (capon)
A spot for the late-night crowd, serving chicken rice through the night with tender capon and a thicker skin — exactly what hits when you're hungry late. Easy to find in the Sawan Withi area, and a lifeline for anyone heading home late or arriving in town after dark.
Rane Chicken Rice (Na Pha)
A shop in the Na Pha area whose regulars come back for the dipping sauce and juicy poached chicken. Walkable from the central shopping streets, so it's an easy lunch stop while you're wandering around town.
Chao Phraya Phochana (riverside)
A shop along the Chao Phraya River, close to the headwaters that the town is known for. It serves chicken rice and Chinese-style one-plate dishes, and pairs well with a stroll along the Pak Nam Pho riverfront.
Je Or Chicken Rice (Nong Somboon)
A shop in the Nong Somboon area that locals eat at regularly. Poached chicken with mild, not-too-strong chicken rice, good for anyone who likes things easy and gentle. Friendly prices.
Thep Chicken Rice (Dreamland)
A shop in the Dreamland area, a go-to dining spot for the town's younger crowd. Solid, standard chicken rice with comfortable seating — good for meeting up with friends or family.
Nam Khaen Chicken Rice (across from Rajabhat)
A shop in the Rajabhat University area with student prices and generous portions. Students and nearby workers eat here regularly, so it's handy if you're staying around there and want a cheap, easy meal.
Straight talk
A lot of these are morning shops — they sell out and close before the afternoon. If there's one you really want to try, get there before noon. Some close on holidays, so it's worth checking the shop's page or calling ahead if you're driving in from far away.
How to eat Pak Nam Pho braised duck and enjoy it
The braised duck here uses a dark Chinese-spiced broth, simmered with herbs and spices like cinnamon, star anise, and soy sauce until the duck is tender and the flavor soaks all the way in. Many Hainanese chicken rice shops in town keep a braising pot going, so you can order it spooned over rice alongside the poached chicken. The crowd favorites are the braised egg and the slow-cooked offal, which come together nicely over hot, fatty rice.
- Over rice — chopped braised duck over chicken rice with an added braised egg makes a filling, good-value one-plate meal.
- As a shared dish — a full plate of braised duck with steamed rice and three-flavor dipping sauce, great when there's a group of you.
- Offal and egg — for anyone who likes a strong Chinese-spice flavor, try the liver, gizzard, and braised egg that has soaked up the broth all the way through.
Want to eat it all in one day? How to plan by neighborhood
If you've got half a day and want to try several shops, plan it by area. Start with the morning shops around the market and Matuli Road first, then move to the riverside or Dreamland later in the day, since the morning shops close earlier.
Morning — market / Matuli area
Start at Ko Tee or Je Tai in the morning for fresh Hainanese chicken rice before it sells out.
Midday — Chao Phraya riverside
Move over to the riverside for a one-plate meal by the headwaters, then carry on with a walk.
Late night — Sawan Withi
If you reach town in the evening, finish at Midnight Chicken Rice for tender late-night capon.
