The nice thing about Nan is how compact the old town is. Wat Phumin, the National Museum and Wat Phra That Chang Kham all sit inside the same small square, and you can loop around them on foot or by bicycle in just a few minutes. The cafes, meanwhile, line the streets of the Nai Wiang neighborhood all around. So this plan pairs the two: walk the old town in the morning while the sun is still gentle, duck into coffee shops in the afternoon, and head out to the walking street in the evening (Friday to Sunday only).
Before you set out
The Kad Khuang Mueang Nan walking street only runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, so if you want to catch it, build your trip around a weekend. Many cafes also close early, around 5β6 PM, so if coffee is your priority, start hopping between shops in the early afternoon.

Hugnan Baked Cafe
A spot known for its coconut cake at friendly prices β good for an afternoon dessert stop.

Tips for walking the old town
Wat Phumin, the museum and Wat Phra That Chang Kham all sit in the same small square, so it's an easy loop on foot. Many hotels in town lend out bicycles, and cycling around the old town in the cool of the morning or evening is comfortable β and easier than driving when you want to stop at cafes.
Making the plan work
- Pick your day β if you want the walking street, stay over on a Friday or Saturday night, since the market only runs Friday to Sunday evenings.
- Where to stay β choose a hotel in the Nai Wiang district and you'll be within walking distance of nearly all the temples and cafes, with no need to drive much.
- Cafe hours β many shops close around 5β6 PM, so if you want to hit several, start in the early afternoon.
- Leave room for the museum β the Nan National Museum is usually closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so check before planning Day 1.
