Ask anyone in Pattani what to eat and the first answer is usually seafood — because Pattani Bay and the river mouth are small-boat fishing grounds where the little boats head out every day. The catch is genuinely fresh and it doesn't cost as much as the tourist towns over on the Andaman side. The seafood places cluster in two areas: Laem Nok (Bana subdistrict) on the city's eastern shore, and the Pak Nam–Sabarang area near the mouth of the Pattani River.
Almost every spot we've picked is halal — no pork, no alcohol — so out-of-towners can eat with peace of mind. The cooking runs southern: hotter and bolder than central Thailand. If you can't handle much heat, tell the kitchen up front.
10 Pattani Seafood Spots Locals Actually Go To
Baan Le Seafood & Café (Laem Nok, Bana)
A seaside spot at Laem Nok where Pattani locals settle in for long, lazy meals — wide-open sea views and fresh seafood every day. The usual orders are big grilled prawns, steamed blue crab, grilled squid, and a punchy southern-style sour orange curry with sea bass. There's a café corner for a cold drink to finish the meal. Halal, and a pretty place for photos.
Ruea Talay Phao (Halal Grilled Seafood)
A long-running grilled-seafood place in the Pak Nam, Sabarang area that's been part of the city for years. The draw is charcoal-grilled seafood with that smoky aroma — prawns, shellfish, squid and whole fish — plus a sharp, properly-seasoned seafood dipping sauce. Locals come here in groups for dinner.
San Kam Pu Pattani (Charoen Pradit Rd, Rusamilae)
A seafood spot in the Rusamilae area near Prince of Songkla University — fresh, good value. People come for the khanom jeen with crab gravy (packed with crab meat), crab fried rice, and a sharply sour fresh-prawn salad. A regular stop for students and working locals.
Por Pla Seafood Grill Buffet
If you eat a lot, head here. A grilled-seafood buffet with a wide spread — prawns, shellfish, squid, meat, vegetables, desserts — that you grill yourself at the table. The selling points are freshness and good value per head. Great for groups or families.
Lae Le Krua Halal Buffet & Grill
Another halal grilled-seafood buffet where Pattani locals meet up. The catch keeps coming, and there's grilled seafood, a moo kratha hot-plate setup with beef and chicken (halal), and a bold dipping sauce. A relaxed, wallet-friendly dinner.
Baan Le Kung Thang (Laem Nok, Lan Nok Krayang)
A shrimp-bucket spot out at Laem Nok — they tip fresh prawns, shellfish, corn and sausage into a bucket to your order, then douse it in a punchy sauce. Easy eating with a sea view. Good for a group of friends who want a rough-and-ready beachside vibe.
Pak Nam Tani Restaurant
A long-running Muslim Thai-seafood place in the Pak Nam area — a simple riverside setting, fresh seafood, friendly prices. The honest, well-done dishes are fried fish, fish steamed in soy sauce, and seafood tom yum. Opens from mid-morning, so it's good for a riverside lunch.
Chok Udom Rat Crab Wharf
Not just a sit-down restaurant but a crab wharf taking the catch straight off the boats — blue crab, prawns and shellfish, very fresh. If you want seafood to cook yourself or buy fresh to take home, stop here; prices beat the general market.
Taipan
A seafood and southern-food spot in town. People come for short-necked clams stir-fried with nam prik pao, garlic-fried squid, and bold southern curries. A comfortable in-town place — good if you want both seafood and southern home-style dishes in one meal.
Doll Food Garden (Halal, Puyud)
A local halal restaurant in the Puyud area with a varied menu of seafood and southern home-style dishes, set in a relaxed garden. Good for families who want home-style cooking alongside a few standout seafood plates in one place.
How to pick a place for the freshest catch
The seafood here is fresh because it comes off the small local boats. The trick is to go when the catch has just landed (late morning to afternoon). Good blue crab and prawns should have clear eyes and a clean sea smell with no sharp odor. If you're not sure, just ask the vendor straight up what came in fresh today — then order that.

Seafood Dishes to Order in Pattani
Pattani seafood is all about freshness, so it works every which way — from a plain charcoal grill to a heavily-seasoned stir-fry. These are the plates we think give you the real taste of Pattani.
- Steamed blue crab / blue crab with curry powder — Pattani Bay blue crab has firm meat and plenty of roe. Steamed and dipped in seafood sauce gives you the full crab flavor, while the curry-powder stir-fry is fragrant and rounded. A dish you shouldn't skip.
- Grilled prawns / tiger prawns — big prawns from the local boats, charcoal-grilled until the shells are fragrant and the meat is sweet and springy. Dip in a sharp southern-style seafood sauce.
- Blanched cockles / clams with nam prik pao — cockles blanched to just-done so they stay juicy, while the clams stir-fried with nam prik pao and holy basil go perfectly with hot steamed rice.
- Steamed sea bass with lime / sour orange curry with sea bass — fresh, firm-fleshed sea bass, steamed with lime for a fresh sour-spicy hit, or in a bold southern sour orange curry that runs hotter than the central-Thai version.
- Mixed seafood tom yum — prawns, shellfish, squid and fish in one pot, sharply sour and spicy. The appetizer almost every table orders.
- Grilled squid / garlic-fried squid — fresh squid charcoal-grilled until fragrant, or fried with garlic and pepper, crisp outside and tender inside. Easy snacking for the whole table.
Kuleng fish, the local specialty
Pattani Bay is one of Thailand's major sources of kuleng (threadfin) fish. The famous souvenir is salted sweet-cured kuleng fish (from community brands like Orang Pantai), with firm flesh and just the right richness — fried and eaten with rice porridge, it's excellent. It runs fairly pricey for the quality, and it's an easy thing to take home as a gift.

Laem Nok (Bana subdistrict)

Check before you travel
Pattani is in Thailand's Deep South. Before you actually go, check the news and the latest safety and situation advisories from official sources every time, and plan your route and timing with some margin. Most people here are Muslim Malay — dress modestly and respect the local culture, especially around prayer times and during Ramadan, when some places change their opening hours.
Tips for Eating Pattani Seafood Well
- Go when the catch has just landed — late morning to afternoon, the seafood is fresher and there's more to choose from than at dinner.
- Ask the price before ordering anything sold by the kilo — crab, prawns and some fish are priced by weight and season, so check to avoid confusion.
- State your spice level — southern cooking is bolder than you may be used to. If you can't handle much heat, order it mild to start.
- Most places are halal, with no alcohol — if you like a drink, brace yourself; the focus here is seafood with fresh fruit juices instead.
- Carry cash — many seaside spots and crab wharves take cash more easily than bank transfers.
