Bangkok to Pattaya
Day Trip or Overnight

Pattaya is the closest beach to Bangkok — an hour and a half by car and you're there — which makes it the go-to escape from the city for both single days and overnight stays. We've split the planning so it's clear what a day trip can realistically fit in, and what an overnight 2-day, 1-night stay lets you add, with every way to get there and real budgets to match.

The appeal of Pattaya for Bangkok folks is that you can leave home late in the morning and still hit the beach before noon — the distance from Bangkok to Pattaya is only about 150 kilometres on Motorway 7, an hour and a half to two hours by car if traffic is light. The question to settle first is whether a day trip is enough, or whether you'd rather stay a night and see Pattaya after dark too.

How to get to Pattaya — van, bus or your own car

Three main options from Bangkok, each suited to a different style. Without your own car, the van is the most nimble; if you're travelling in a group or want to stop at several spots, driving yourself works out better.

  • Van — board at Ekkamai or Mo Chit bus terminal. Fares run around 130–170 THB, the run is direct and takes about 2 hours, with frequent departures all day. Good for solo travellers or couples.
  • Bus — tickets start around 130–160 THB. More comfortable seating but it stops at several points, so figure on about 2.5–3 hours.
  • Driving yourself — Motorway 7, around 150 km. Tolls for a sedan total somewhere from tens to just over a hundred THB depending on the gates, and it's 1.5–2 hours behind the wheel. This is the most flexible option if you want to stop at Khao Chi Chan or Nong Nooch along the way.

Beat the traffic

On the way out, try to leave before 8 a.m. On the way back, Motorway 7 heading into Bangkok gets packed on Sunday evenings. If you've stayed overnight, heading home Monday morning or late Sunday afternoon is far easier.

Plan A — Day trip (done in a day)

To make a single day in Pattaya worthwhile you have to pick a focus. Two ways work: head straight out to swim at Koh Larn, or stay on the mainland side and tick off photo spots and seafood. The plan below is the Koh Larn beach route, which Bangkok folks like best.

Day Trip

Koh Larn Beach Route

06:30
Leave Bangkok — drive Motorway 7 or catch an early vanLeaving early helps you dodge traffic and catch an earlier boat
08:30
Arrive in Pattaya, head straight to Bali Hai PierPaid parking is available around the pier
09:00
Take the boat to Koh Larn — the big ferry is ~30 THB and about 45 minutes, or a speedboat is around 150–300 THB and 15–20 minutesCheck the weather first; small boats don't run when the swell is strong
10:00
Swim at Tawaen Beach or Samae Beach — the water is much clearer than on the city sideRent a deck chair with an umbrella; the price is negotiable
12:30
Beachfront seafood lunch on the islandAsk the price per kilo before ordering, especially for prawns and crab
15:30
Take the boat back to the Pattaya sideDon't wait for the last boat — leave yourself a buffer
16:30
Stop at the Pratamnak Hill viewpoint for photos before heading homeThe view over Pattaya Bay is lovely in the softer light
17:30
Set off back to BangkokTraffic builds in the evening on weekends — allow extra time

If you'd rather skip the boat

A day without going to the island is fun too: swim at Jomtien Beach in the morning, have seafood at lunch, drop by the Sanctuary of Truth or Khao Chi Chan in the afternoon, then head home — a full day without gambling on the swell.

Plan B — Overnight, 2 days 1 night (more relaxed)

Staying overnight is the answer if you want to see Pattaya by both day and night — the Koh Larn beach, the mainland sights, and the beachfront atmosphere after dark. Make the first day a culture-and-photo-spots day and save the beach for the second morning, when it's still fresh.

Day 1

Arrive in Pattaya, explore the mainland

08:00
Leave Bangkok
10:00
Stop at Khao Chi Chan to see the Buddha image carved into a cliff over 100 metres highIt's on the Sattahip side, a convenient stop just before town
11:30
On to Nong Nooch Garden for the landscaped grounds and cultural showIt's a big area with a lot of walking — wear comfortable shoes
13:00
Lunch around Jomtien
14:30
Check in, rest and take a dip in the poolPick the central Pattaya or Jomtien area depending on your style
16:30
Sanctuary of Truth — a seaside wooden temple with a spire around 105 metres tallLate-afternoon light is great for photos
18:30
Seafood dinner, then a stroll along Pattaya BeachKeep your bag and valuables secure in crowded spots
Day 2

Koh Larn beach, then home

07:30
Breakfast, then check outYou can leave your bags at the hotel before heading to the island
08:30
Go to Bali Hai Pier and take the boat to Koh LarnCheck the weather and boat schedule first
09:30
Swim at Tawaen Beach, clear blue water
12:00
Seafood lunch on the islandAlways ask the price per kilo before ordering
14:00
Boat back to the mainland, pick up your bags at the hotel
15:30
Set off back to BangkokAvoid leaving on Sunday evening if you can

Rough budget per person

The figures below assume a comfortable trip, nothing extravagant. Hotel rates and boat fares swing with the season and holidays — over high season and long weekends rooms cost more and are harder to book, so be straight with yourself and pad the budget.

  • Day trip — transport/fuel 150–400 THB + return boat 60–600 THB + meals 300–600 THB + chair and umbrella 100–200 THB, roughly 700–1,500 THB per person.
  • Overnight 2 days 1 night — add roughly 500–1,500 THB per person per night for accommodation (split between you) + attraction admissions 200–700 THB, for a whole-trip total of about 1,800–4,000 THB per person.
  • Admission to the Sanctuary of Truth and Nong Nooch runs from a hundred to several hundred THB per ticket. Check the latest price on site, or buy tickets ahead online, which is usually cheaper.

Things worth knowing before you go

  • Check the weather before heading to the island — during the monsoon the swell is strong and small boats may stop running. Don't push it onto a boat if staff have called it off.
  • Ask the per-kilo price for seafood before ordering — especially prawns, crab and shellfish, so the bill doesn't surprise you.
  • Pattaya has a nightlife district — if you go out at night, do it with your wits about you and keep a close eye on your valuables, bag and phone in busy spots.
  • Book accommodation ahead over long weekends — prices rise and rooms fill up fast.

FAQ

How long does Bangkok to Pattaya take?

Driving yourself on Motorway 7, the distance is around 150 kilometres and it takes about 1.5–2 hours if traffic is light. A direct van runs about 2 hours, while a bus takes around 2.5–3 hours because it stops at several points.

Is a single day trip from Bangkok to Pattaya enough?

It's enough for either a Koh Larn beach day or exploring the city side — not both. If you leave Bangkok before 8 a.m. you'll get plenty of swimming time. But if you want the beach plus the mainland sights and the nighttime atmosphere, an overnight stay is far more satisfying.

How do you get to Koh Larn from Pattaya, and what does it cost?

Take the boat from Bali Hai Pier. The big ferry costs around 30 THB and takes about 45 minutes, or a speedboat is around 150–300 THB and 15–20 minutes. Always check the boat schedule and the weather before you go.

Which area should I stay in Pattaya?

If you're after walking around and food, pick central Pattaya. If you want a quieter beach and you're with family, pick Jomtien. Both areas have easy access to the Koh Larn pier.

When is the best time to visit Pattaya?

November to February has good weather and comfortable swimming, but room rates and crowds run higher than the rest of the year. During the monsoon, brace for swell and rain — boats to the island may not run on some days.
