Phayao in 1 Day
Lake – Temples – Lakeside Cafes

Phayao is a small town built for slow days, with Kwan Phayao lake at its centre. If you only have one day, this plan takes you to pay respects at the town's main Buddha, ride a boat out to a temple in the middle of the lake, walk the waterfront, and finish with a cafe and a sunset. Every stop sits within a few kilometres of the next, so you can do it by car or even by bike.

Phayao in 1 Day Lake – Temples – Lakeside Cafes

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Kwan Phayao is the largest freshwater lake in northern Thailand and the third largest in the country. Around its shore you'll find old temples, a morning market, a lakeside cycling path, and new cafes opening all the time. The appeal here is the slow pace — the town isn't crowded, getting around is easy, and it suits anyone who'd rather travel without rushing. The one-day plan below follows the light: an early start at the temples, working your way down to the waterfront just in time for evening.

A 1-day Phayao timeline

Getting up early pays off most here, because the air by the lake is cool and the morning light is lovely. This schedule leaves enough room to wander; speed it up or slow it down as you like.

Morning

The town's main Buddha + lakeside morning market

07:00
Start at the lakeside morning market and grab sticky rice with sai ua, khao ji, or a hot coffee to take the edge off your hungerThe morning market is busiest from 6–9 am and the good stuff sells out fast, so go early to get the full spread.
08:00
Pay respects to Phra Chao Ton Luang at Wat Sri Khom Kham, a large Chiang Saen–style stucco Buddha — the principal image and the spiritual heart of Phayao, roughly 14 m across the lap and about 16 m tallThe temple is open around 08:00–18:00, free entry, dress modestly. Behind the temple there's a cultural hall and a mural viharn to walk through.
09:30
Stroll the lakeside plaza in front of the temple and take photos of the lake against the mountains while the air is still coolThere are small coffee stands and waterfront benches where you can sit and rest before moving on.
Late morning–midday

Boat to the lake temple + a lunch of Kwan Phayao fish

10:30
Take a boat from the lakeside pier to pay respects to Luang Pho Sila at Wat Tilok Aram, a temple in the middle of the lake that's over 500 years old and once lay submerged beneath the waterThe boat starts around ฿30/person, or about ฿150 to charter the whole boat for several people. It's roughly a 15-minute trip out to the middle of the lake — bring a hat and some water.
11:15
Back on shore, walk or cycle along the lake to take in the view; there are sculptures and photo spots along the wayThere are bicycle and e-bike rental points along the waterfront, so you can pedal an easy stretch or two.
12:00
Lunch at a lakeside restaurant — order fried fish, grilled fish, or tom yum made with freshwater fish from the lake, the town's signature dishThere are several waterfront restaurants; pick a table right on the lake so you get the breeze and the view while you eat.
Afternoon–evening

Cafe break + catching the sunset over the lake

14:00
Duck out of the afternoon heat into a cafe — sip coffee, get some work done, or take photos at a spot overlooking the lakeSee our shortlist of cafes in the next section. Many stay open into the evening, so you can catch the golden hour too.
16:30
Move to a waterfront spot or a west-facing cafe and wait for the evening lightIn the evening, plenty of locals come out to walk, run, and cycle along the lake — the mood is relaxed and easy.
18:00
Catch the sunset behind the mountains from the King Ngam Mueang Monument or a lakeside plaza to end the dayThis is the highlight of the day: golden light off the water with the mountains in silhouette is the image people remember Phayao by.

Timing tip

If you want to take the boat to Wat Tilok Aram for the candle-lit wian thian ceremony, aim for a full-moon Buddhist holy day in the early evening, around 17:00–19:00, when there's a merit-making ritual out on the lake. On an ordinary day you can still take the boat out to pay respects as usual during the daytime.

Our pick of the lakeside cafes

Phayao has seen a wave of new cafes open over the past few years, most of them hugging the lakeshore or the lanes just back from the water. These are the ones people talk about most, and they genuinely have the views. Pick one or two — that's plenty for a single day.

Lakeside · serves food

A Ga Li Go Ingkwan

A white loft-style house on Phahonyothin Road, with both air-conditioned rooms and a breezy balcony looking out over the lake. There's homemade bakery and proper food, so it's a good place to settle in for a while.

Wide view · pet corner

Bunny Moon Cafe

A lakeside cafe with a rooftop that opens up a wide view of the mountains and the lake. There's a small pet corner with rabbits for the kids, and prices are easy on the wallet.

Open-air · photo-friendly

Three Two Cafe

A vintage spot with a Japanese touch, set among the trees in an open-air layout with the mountains and lake in view. Good for photos and an easy sit-down.

On the water · serves food

The Lake Cafe

A waterfront cafe near the King Ngam Mueang plaza, with a relaxed, natural feel and a choice of coffee plus Thai and Western dishes.

How to pick a cafe for the evening light

If you're set on the sunset, choose a place that faces the lake (to the west) and go grab a seat before 17:00. In high season the waterfront tables fill up fast.

Extra stops if you have time to spare

  • Wat Analyo Thipayaram (Doi Busarakham) — a temple on a hill outside town, with a view down over the whole lake and the town. Good to drop by in the morning or before you head home.
  • Wiang Phayao ancient site / Wiang Phayao Museum — for anyone who likes Lanna history, you can walk the traces of the old town.
  • Lakeside cycling path — if you're up for some exercise, rent a bike and pedal along the water in the morning or evening when the air is just right.
  • King Ngam Mueang Monument — a popular photo and lake-view spot, right on the water in the centre of town.

Getting around the lake

Phayao town is small, and the main sights — Wat Sri Khom Kham, the Wat Tilok Aram pier, the morning market, and the cafes — mostly line the lake within a few kilometres of each other. The easiest way to get around is your own car or a rented motorbike; if you don't drive, a rental bike along the lake plus a bit of walking will cover the main stops comfortably in a single day.

FAQ

Is 1 day enough for Phayao?

It's enough for the lakeside highlights: paying respects at Wat Sri Khom Kham, taking a boat out to Wat Tilok Aram in the middle of the lake, a lunch of Kwan Phayao fish, and ending at a cafe for sunset. If you want to head up to Wat Analyo on the hill or go further afield to Chiang Kham or Phu Sang, plan on two days.

How much does the boat to Wat Tilok Aram cost?

The boat starts around ฿30 per person, or about ฿150 to charter the whole boat for several people. It takes roughly 15 minutes to row out from the pier to the temple in the middle of the lake. On full-moon Buddhist holy days there's a special candle-lit wian thian ceremony out on the water in the evening.

What time does Wat Sri Khom Kham open?

It's open for worship every day, around 08:00–18:00 (some sources list an earlier opening). Entry is free, but dress modestly. Inside there's the large Phra Chao Ton Luang Buddha and a mural viharn to walk through.

When is the best time to visit Phayao?

Late rainy season into the cool season, roughly November to February, brings cool, comfortable weather, a clear lake, and lovely morning and evening light — the best time for a boat ride and waterfront photos.

What food is Phayao known for around the lake?

The star is freshwater fish from the lake — fried fish, grilled fish, and tom yum fish — alongside northern dishes like khanom jeen nam ngiao, sai ua, and crispy pork (khaep moo), all easy to find at the lakeside restaurants and the morning market.
