Phayao
2 Days 1 Night

Phayao is an easy town to cover in 2 days and 1 night, because the main sights all cluster around Kwan Phayao, the largest freshwater lake in northern Thailand. This plan keeps the pace slow: start along the waterfront with the town temples, take a boat out to the temple on the water, spend a night by the lake, then head up the hill to Wat Analyo Thipayaram on your second morning before you make the drive home.

Phayao 2 Days 1 Night

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

What's nice about Phayao is how compact it is — almost all the standout sights are just a few minutes' drive apart. Kwan Phayao sits at the centre of it all, ringed by the town's twin temples, a lakeside road for catching the sunset, and waterfront restaurants. Wat Analyo Thipayaram is the exception: it's up on Doi Busarakham on the far side of the lake, about a 20-minute drive from town. This 2-day, 1-night plan paces it all out so you're never running around the whole day.

The 2-day, 1-night plan at a glance

  • Day 1 — Arrive in Phayao late morning, walk through Wat Sri Khom Kham by the lake, take a boat out to Wat Tilok Aram on the water, rest in the afternoon, then catch the sunset from the King Ngam Mueang Monument plaza in the evening.
  • Day 2 — Make merit by the lake in the morning, drive up Doi Busarakham to Wat Analyo Thipayaram, come back down for lunch, then head home.
  • Good for — couples, families, anyone who likes a bit of merit-making, and travellers after a quiet trip without the crowds.

Day 1 — The waterfront, the town temples, the temple on the water

Day 1

Kwan Phayao + the town temples

10:30
Arrive in Phayao and check in to a lakeside placeMost places to stay line the lakeside road, so you can drop your bags and head straight back out. If you turn up earlier than this, just leave your luggage at the front desk first.
11:00
Pay respects to Phra Chao Ton Luang at Wat Sri Khom KhamPhayao's main temple sits right on the lake and is over 500 years old. Phra Chao Ton Luang is the largest Buddha image in the Lanna region. Inside there's a temple art hall with murals so striking that plenty of people end up lingering with their cameras.
12:00
Lunch — khanom jeen nam ngiao + northern Thai foodKhanom jeen nam ngiao and khao soi are the town's everyday dishes, easy to find at restaurants in town and at the morning market. Prices start around ฿35–50 a plate.
13:30
Take a boat to Wat Tilok Aram out on the lakeBoard at the Kwan Phayao pier. The boat starts around ฿30 per person, or about ฿150 to charter the whole boat. This temple was once submerged and later restored, so it's now a chedi standing out on the water — a sight you won't find in many other places.
15:00
Rest and grab a coffee at a lakeside cafeThe afternoon sun is harsh, so duck into a waterfront cafe. There are several with lake views where you can sit and wait out the heat until the evening light.
17:30
Catch the sunset at the King Ngam Mueang Monument plazaThis is the go-to lake-view spot. In the evening locals come out to exercise, stroll, and cycle along the water, and the light as the sun drops behind the lake is lovely.
19:00
Dinner — freshwater fish or grilled meats by the lakeKwan Phayao is known for its freshwater fish, and the waterfront restaurants serve grilled and fried fish to choose from. Or you can find a moo kratha (Thai BBQ) place in town instead.

A tip about the boat

The boats out to Wat Tilok Aram are rowboats you charter whole, so going with a group works out cheaper. On the major Buddhist holy days (Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asanha Bucha), there's a candle-lit wian thian ceremony out on the water that's become one of Phayao's defining images — if your trip lands on one of those days, don't miss it.

Day 2 — Make merit by the lake, then up to Wat Analyo

Day 2

Doi Busarakham, Wat Analyo Thipayaram

06:30
Offer alms by the lake and catch the morning airMornings by the lake are cool and pleasant, with locals coming out to make merit and exercise. This is when the lake is at its calmest and best for the day.
07:30
Breakfast, Phayao styleTry rice soup, congee, or khanom jeen nam ngiao for breakfast at one of the places in town, with a hot coffee before you set off.
09:00
Drive up Doi Busarakham to Wat Analyo ThipayaramIt's about a 20-minute drive from town, crossing over to the San Pa Muang side. A paved road runs all the way to the top and there's plenty of parking. The temple is open 08:00–18:00.
09:30
Walk among the Buddha images and the artwork on the hillThere are several Buddha images up here, with a striking golden principal image, plus sculptures and ornate pavilions spread across the grounds. From the highest point you get a wide view over Kwan Phayao and the town.
11:30
Head back down the hill into townThe way down doesn't take long. Leave a little time to stop for photos at the viewpoints along the road.
12:30
A farewell lunch + souvenir shoppingHave lunch in town, then pick up some Phayao souvenirs — crispy pork (khaep moo), sai ua, or pla som (fermented fish) — before you head home.

Before you head up to Wat Analyo

The temple is up on a hill, and the light from morning into late morning is just right — not too hot. Wear comfortable shoes, since there are stairs and several terraces to walk, dress modestly inside the temple grounds, and bring some drinking water. There are drink stalls and clean restrooms up at the temple.

Extra stops if you have time to spare

Lakeside

The Kwan Phayao lakeside road

Cycle or take a long walk along the lake, with rest spots and lake views the whole way. Best in the early morning or evening.

Photo spot

Wat Tilok Aram (lake pavilion side)

If you don't take the boat, you can still stop at a spot on the shore with a view of the chedi out on the water — it photographs beautifully in the evening light.

Food & souvenirs

Phayao morning market

Northern food, fresh produce, and souvenirs all in one place. A good stop on your second morning before you head up the hill.

Getting there, where to stay, and budget

Phayao sits between Chiang Rai and Lampang on the northern highway. From Bangkok there are direct coaches, or you can fly into Chiang Rai and drive on for about an hour and a half. Once you're here, getting around is easiest with your own car or a rental, since Wat Analyo is on the far side of the lake.

  • Where to stay — choose a lakeside spot for the view and walking access to the main sights. Prices range from guesthouses in the low hundreds of baht up to lake-view hotels in the low thousands.
  • Getting around town — your own car or a rental is easiest, as the distances between stops are short, just a few minutes each.
  • Budget per person, 2 days 1 night — around ฿1,500–3,000 (accommodation, food, boat fare, fuel), shifting up or down depending on where you stay and eat.
