The nice thing about Phayao with kids is that everything sits close together. The town wraps around Kwan Phayao, and driving from one spot to the next is usually no more than 15–20 minutes. The only longer drives are the day you head out to Chiang Kham or up to the hilltop temple. In this plan we keep the first two days in town around the lake, then save the longer trips — or a quick temple stop — for the last day before you leave. Swap things around to suit your kids' ages.
Day 1 — Kwan Phayao, a boat ride and feeding the fish
The first day stays by the lake the whole time. The kids get a boat ride, get to feed the fish, and have room to run around in the park. It's a low-effort day but the most fun one for little ones.
Day 1
Phayao town · around the lake
09:00
Stroll along Kwan Phayao and feed the fishThere's a long walking path right along the water, and the lake is full of fish. Buy bread or fish food from the vendors near the pier — this is the part the kids love most.
10:30
Take a rowing boat to Wat Tilok Aram, the temple in the lakeBoats start at 30 THB per person (about 5 people per boat), or charter a whole boat for 150 THB that seats around 10–20. The round trip takes about an hour and you get to pay respects to the stone Buddha out in the lake. With small kids, put a life jacket on them and hold their hands getting on and off the boat.
12:00
Lunch at a lakeside restaurantPopular spots like Niyom Suk and Chitlom Chom Kwan have both air-conditioned rooms and waterside seating. Fried tilapia, gaeng hang lay, and nam prik num are all on the menu, and kids can eat fine if you order it without chilli.
14:30
Somdet Ya 90th Anniversary Park + playgroundA public park right on the lake, across from the King Ngam Mueang Monument, with a playground, a wide lawn, and a pond — plenty of space to let the kids run. Inside there's also TK Park Phayao, a cool air-conditioned children's library that's perfect for getting out of the afternoon sun.
17:30
Watch the sunset over the lakeThe evening light is lovely as the sky changes colour over the water. Settle into a lakeside café or restaurant and watch the sun go down at your own pace.
About the boats with small kids
The boat out to Wat Tilok Aram is an open rowing boat. If you're travelling with kids under five, ask the boatman for a child-sized life jacket first, and chartering your own boat is more comfortable than sharing. On full-moon holy days there's an evening candle-procession ceremony out on the water — it's lovely but busy, so skip that day if you'd rather avoid the crowds.
🎟️Book the activities in your Phayao trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
🎟️ See all Phayao tours & activities (Klook) Day 2 — Wat Sri Khom Kham, Wat Analayo and a café with animals
Day two is a temple-and-views day, broken up with a café where the kids can meet some animals. There isn't much walking, and there are plenty of spots to sit and rest along the way.
Day 2
Twin temples · viewpoints
09:00
Wat Sri Khom Kham, home of Phra Chao Ton LuangPhayao's main temple, right on the lake, houses Phra Chao Ton Luang — a Chiang Saen-style Buddha image with a lap 14 metres wide. The kids get to see a genuinely huge Buddha, and the temple grounds are shady and easy to walk.
10:30
Wat Analayo Thipayaram on Doi BusarakhamA temple on a hilltop you can drive all the way up to, with several Buddha images, an Indian-style chedi, and a high viewpoint that takes in the whole lake. The road up is winding, so bring medicine if your kids get carsick.
12:30
Lunch in townTry khanom jeen nam ngiao at a place in town — it's mild and easy for kids — or head back to a lakeside restaurant for round two.
14:30
Bunny Moon Café, a rabbit café by the lakeA lakeside café with a small-animal zone — rabbits, goats, and silkie chickens. The kids get to feed them and take photos while the grown-ups sip coffee with a lake view.
16:30
Cycle or stroll along the lake in the eveningThere are bikes for rent along the lake, perfect for a breezy ride beside the water. Older kids can ride their own; little ones can sit behind or ride in a samlor (pedal trishaw).
Little kidsTK Park Phayao
A learning park inside Somdet Ya Park with a cool air-conditioned children's library and an activity zone — great for getting out of the sun or for a rainy day.
With animalsBunny Moon Café
A lakeside café with rabbits, goats, and silkie chickens that kids can feed and get up close to.
Day 3 — Your choice: head out far, or keep it easy before you leave
The last day depends on how the kids are holding up. If they're still game and you want a taste of Tai Yai and Tai Lue culture, head out to Chiang Kham. If you'd rather keep things gentle before packing up, do another loop of the lake and then make your way home.
Day 3
Option A · Chiang Kham — Tai Lue
09:00
Drive out to Chiang Kham districtIt's about 75 km from Phayao town, roughly an hour and a half, with rice fields and mountains along both sides of the road.
10:30
Wat Nantaram, a Tai Yai golden-teak hallThe whole hall is built of teak and nearly a hundred years old, with finely carved detailing. There's a small antiques museum inside the temple where kids can look at old objects, and the atmosphere is quiet and easy to wander.
12:00
Lunch — Tai Lue foodTry Tai Lue dishes in Chiang Kham — grilled fish and jin sam phrik — in an old wooden house, and pick up some Tai Lue stories along with the meal.
14:00
Head backOn the way back, stop at a local market for crispy pork rinds and sai ua (northern sausage) to take home.
Day 3
Option B · an easy day around town
08:30
Morning market by the lakeWander the morning market, try hot sticky rice and local sweets, and feed the fish by the lake one more time.
10:00
A late breakfast at a lakeside caféSit at a café with a lake view and order bingsu or pastries for the kids, with one last coffee for the grown-ups.
11:30
Pack up and take one last walk around the lakeGet a family photo by the lake before you go — the King Ngam Mueang Monument is a good spot for it.
Tips for a smooth Phayao trip with kids
- Stay on or near the lake — you can wake up, feed the fish, and stroll by the water without a long drive every morning.
- Mornings and evenings have the best weather — the midday sun is strong, so plan outdoor activities for early and late, and retreat to a café or TK Park in the afternoon.
- Bring warm layers in the cool season — from November to February it gets chilly by the lake and up on the hill, and little ones will need an extra layer.
- Pack motion-sickness medicine for Wat Analayo and the Chiang Kham trip — both the road up the hill and the road to Chiang Kham are winding.
- Carry cash — boat fares, roadside snacks, and lots of small shops are easier to pay in cash.
How many days?
If you have very young kids, 2 days and 1 night is enough — focus on the lake and Wat Sri Khom Kham and skip the longer trips. But if you want the lake, the hilltop temple, and the Tai Lue culture in Chiang Kham, 3 days and 2 nights is just right and won't be rushed enough to leave the kids cranky.
