Phayao–Lampang Road Trip
3 Days, 2 Nights

Phayao and Lampang sit only about a two-hour drive apart, so it's easy to roll them into one trip. Spend the first day soaking up the lake-town mood in Phayao, then drop south to Lampang — the horse-carriage town with old Lanna temples, a riverside heritage market and hot springs out in the forest. We've laid the whole thing out as a day-by-day timeline you can just follow on a self-drive, no rushing required.

Phayao–Lampang Road Trip 3 Days, 2 Nights

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The upper North has a real charm in how its small towns sit close enough to string into a single route. Phayao and Lampang make a good pair — one is a quiet lake town along the kwan (lagoon), the other an old city where horse carriages still run and a century-old market lines the river. This trip suits anyone driving themselves over 3 days and 2 nights: one night in Phayao, one in Lampang, so you never have to rush and actually get to enjoy both towns.

The Phayao–Lampang route and distances

From central Phayao to central Lampang is roughly 130–145 km, a drive of a little over two hours. There are two routes to choose from. The main one is Highway 1 (Phahonyothin) via Ngao — shorter, but with more climbing and winding mountain stretches. The other runs along Route 1091 via Wang Nuea, a bit longer but with fewer curves and easier on the eyes. If mountain bends aren't your thing, take the Wang Nuea route.

  • Phahonyothin route (Hwy 1 via Ngao) — about 30 km shorter, but with more mountain climbs and curves. Best if you're comfortable on hill roads.
  • Wang Nuea route (Hwy 1091) — slightly longer, fewer curves, a more relaxed drive. Passes through Wang Nuea district where you can stop for a break.
  • Public transport — vans and intercity buses on the northern lines do pass through, but a trip like this is far more flexible by car, since several stops are outside the towns.

A tip on driving

If you're coming from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, fill the tank before leaving the bigger cities — gas stations are spaced fairly far apart on the mountain stretches. Check your tyres and brakes too, since there are several long downhill sections along the way.

Where you should stay

Phayao

By Kwan Phayao (first night)

Pick a place near the kwan and you'll wake up to the lake view, with cafés and waterside restaurants in walking distance.

Lampang

In Lampang city (second night)

Stay in the old-town quarter near Kad Kong Ta and Khuang Nakhon, handy for the market and hopping on a horse carriage.

Splitting your nights between the two towns means no doubling back. On day 2 you drive straight from Phayao to Lampang and carry on exploring Lampang from there, saving a lot of time on the road.

FAQ

How long does Phayao to Lampang take, and can I drive it myself?

It's roughly 130–145 km and a little over two hours by car. The route is clear: there's the Phahonyothin road via Ngao, which is shorter but has more curves, and the Wang Nuea road, which is slightly longer but an easier drive. It's very well suited to self-driving.

Should I stay in Phayao or Lampang?

For a 3-day, 2-night trip we'd suggest one night in Phayao, then moving to Lampang for one night. That way you avoid driving back and forth and have time to enjoy both towns without rushing.

What days is Kad Kong Ta in Lampang open?

Kad Kong Ta is a walking market that runs on Saturdays and Sundays only, in the evening from around 16:00 to 22:00. If you want to walk this market, line up your Lampang night with a Saturday or Sunday; if you come on a weekday, look for an evening market in town instead.

When is the best time to visit Phayao and Lampang?

Late rainy season into the cool season (roughly October to February), when the weather is pleasant and cool, Kwan Phayao and the mountain views look their best, and it's a good time for a soak at the Chae Son hot springs. The hot season works too, but the days are warmer.

Are there hot springs you can actually soak in around Lampang?

Yes — at Chae Son National Park in Mueang Pan district, there's hot mineral water you can boil eggs in, foot-soaking pools, and private mineral-bath rooms. Entry and soaking fees are cheap, making it a great stop to rest your legs on the last day before heading home.
