With a nature trip in Phayao you have to accept one thing up front: the best spots are far from town. Doi Phu Langka sits in Pong district, roughly 100-plus kilometers from the city. Phu Sang Waterfall is in Phu Sang district right up against the border, and Champa Thong Waterfall is the closest of the three to town. So this trip is routed to flow in one direction rather than doubling back — start with the farthest point, then loop back toward the city.
The best window is late rainy season into early winter, roughly October through February. The sea of fog at Phu Langka shows up often and the waterfalls still have plenty of water. Come in the hot season and the fog is hard to catch, but soaking in the waterfalls is more comfortable.

About the ride up the mountain
The road up Phu Langka is steep, winding red dirt and gets very slippery in the rainy season. Unless you've got a 4WD and a driver who knows the route, taking a local vehicle is far safer — and it puts income back into the community too.
Sea of fog at Pha Chang Noi → Warm Phu Sang Waterfall
Phu Sang Waterfall — the only warm waterfall in Thailand
The real draw of Phu Sang National Park is a waterfall that's naturally warm, around 35°C, with clear water and none of the sulfur smell you get at typical hot springs — so it's comfortable to wade into, especially in winter when the air is sharp. It's not a big waterfall, about 25 meters high, but it flows steadily all year.
- Entry — 20 THB for adults, 10 THB for children; open 06:00–18:00
- Location — Phu Sang subdistrict, Phu Sang district, near the border, not far from Chiang Kham
- Things to do — soak in the warm falls, walk the nature trail, camp inside the park
- Facilities — the park entrance has made-to-order food, grilled chicken, and drinks

Book the activities in your Phayao trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Champa Thong Waterfall — the near-town falls many overlook
If you'd rather not drive far, Champa Thong Waterfall inside Doi Luang National Park is the closest option to town on this trip. It's a multi-tier falls in evergreen forest with clear, cool water; the lower tiers are an easy walk and great for a cool-off swim. The turnoff is from the Chiang Rai–Phayao road around the km 7 marker, then about 16 kilometers in.
Before entering the park
Both Phu Sang and Doi Luang are national parks, and some trails may close in parts during the rainy season for safety. Call the park office before you set out, especially if you're going during heavy rain.
What to prepare for a nature trip in Phayao
- Vehicle — self-driving is the most convenient way to do this trip, but for the road up Phu Langka switch to a local vehicle; don't force a sedan up there
- Clothing — Doi Phu Langka gets genuinely cold in winter, so pack warm layers; for the waterfalls, bring a change of clothes
- Footwear — non-slip or strapped shoes handle the falls and dirt tracks far better than flip-flops
- Cash — the mountain transfer, park entry fees, and most local shops take cash
- Check the weather — rainy season means slippery roads and fog blocking the view; late rainy season into early winter is the sweet spot
Doi Phu Langka (Pha Chang Noi)
Phayao's main sea-of-fog viewpoint, in Pong district. The road up is steep, so take a local vehicle to the top and stay overnight for a shot at the morning fog.
Warm Phu Sang Waterfall
The only warm waterfall in Thailand, around 35°C, with clear water and no sulfur smell — comfortable to soak in even in winter.
Champa Thong Waterfall
A multi-tier falls in the evergreen forest of Doi Luang, the closest to town and an easy walk — ideal for wrapping up the trip before heading back.
