The Phetchabun–Loei route is a great fit for a winter road trip, because the signature peaks of both provinces line up along the same north–south corridor — no long detours. Most people start at Khao Kho (about 580–590 km from Bangkok, a 6–7 hour drive), then work their way north into Loei. The distances between towns aren't long, but it's winding mountain road, so build in extra time and drive during daylight.
Best time to go
November to January is peak season for the sea of mist and cool-weather flowers. Morning temperatures on Phu Ruea can drop close to 0°C. Late rainy/early cool season (October) brings thick mist but still some rain. If you're going in high winter, book your Khao Kho and Chiang Khan stays several weeks ahead — they fill up fast.
Route overview and distances
Before the day-by-day plan, here's the core distance framework to help you time your driving. These are approximate distances along the actual roads, not straight lines.
- Bangkok → Khao Kho — about 580–590 km via Highway 21 (Saraburi–Lom Sak), a 6–7 hour drive.
- Khao Kho → Phu Thap Boek — about 40–50 km via Lom Sak–Lom Kao, a 1–1.5 hour drive, steep near the top.
- Khao Kho/Lom Sak → Phu Ruea (Loei) — about 110–130 km, a 2–2.5 hour drive through Dan Sai.
- Phu Ruea → Chiang Khan — about 90–100 km, a 1.5–2 hour drive through Loei town.
- Chiang Khan → Bangkok — about 560 km, a 7–8 hour drive via Highway 201/21.
About the car
The final climb up Phu Thap Boek is very steep. A sedan can make it, but you'll need low gear and good brakes. If you're not confident, local songthaews/trucks will take you up from the parking area below. Fill the tank before heading into the mountains — gas stations are fairly spread out.
Book the activities in your Phetchabun trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 — Khao Kho, sea of mist and a temple on the hill
Khao Kho, Phetchabun
Morning sea of mist
The prime window for Khao Kho's sea of mist is around 5–6 a.m., when low mist blankets the valley. Set an alarm. The favorite spots are the wind turbine field and the roadside viewpoints along the Khao Kho road. On a clear morning you'll see it well, but some mornings you'll miss it — it comes down to luck and the weather.
Day 2 — Phu Thap Boek, then crossing to Phu Ruea
Phu Thap Boek → Phu Ruea (crossing into Loei)
Up to Phu Ruea's summit
Phu Ruea National Park is open roughly 05:00–20:00. Entry is 200 THB for Thai adults, 100 THB for children, and 30 THB per car. The main sunrise spots are Pha Lon Noi and Decho viewpoint. To catch the sunrise, leave your accommodation before dawn, drive up, then walk a short way.
Day 3 — Phu Ruea's summit, then down to Chiang Khan
Phu Ruea → Chiang Khan → home
Where else to stop if you have extra time
If you stretch the trip to 4 days or want to tweak the route, these are stops not far off the main line. Add them depending on your energy and time.
Phu Pa Po (the Fuji of Loei), Nong Hin district
A viewpoint over Phu Hor, a flat-topped peak that resembles Mount Fuji. Ride a community farm tractor up for a 360-degree view; winter brings a sea of mist.
Suan Hin Pha Ngam (the Kunming of Loei), Nong Hin district
Pointed limestone hills arranged like Kunming, with walking trails and short boat rides. A good stop if you're driving the Loei–Khon Kaen route.
Phu Hin Rong Kla (Phetchabun–Phitsanulok border)
Cracked-stone fields, Pha Chu Thong cliff, and mountain history. Winter brings wild Himalayan cherry blossoms. It's on the Phu Thap Boek side, so you can add it to Day 2.
Loei town–Phra That Si Song Rak, Dan Sai
An old stupa symbolizing friendship, sitting between Phu Ruea and Chiang Khan. Stop to pay respects as you drive through Dan Sai.
Food along the way you shouldn't miss
This trip involves long drives, so the food along the way is the reward. Here are the standouts you can actually find at each stop.
Lom Sak noodles
The bold, brothy noodles of Lom Sak district — a classic refueling meal before climbing Phu Thap Boek or crossing into Loei.
Lom Kao khanom chin
Fresh rice noodles from Lom Kao, served with a choice of curries. A local specialty in the foothills before the climb up Phu Thap Boek.
Hmong food on Phu Thap Boek
Several restaurants atop Phu Thap Boek serve Hmong dishes and highland food, with cabbage-field views to go with it.
Phetchabun sweet tamarind
The province's standout souvenir — sweet and meaty. You can find it from Phetchabun town all the way to roadside shops on Highway 21.
Phu Ruea wine and grapes
Phu Ruea grows grapes for wine. You can walk the vineyards and take home fresh grapes, grape juice, and local wine.
Loei pork crackling and moo yor
Isan/Loei-style souvenirs, easy to find in Loei town and along the road before Chiang Khan.
Chiang Khan coconut candy
Chiang Khan's signature souvenir — coconut flesh coated in colored sugar. Find it around Kaeng Khut Khu and the walking street.
Khao piak sen and riverside coffee in Chiang Khan
Chiang Khan's light breakfast is khao piak sen (rice noodle soup), followed by coffee in an old wooden-house café with the Mekong breeze.
Sticky-rice alms-giving in Chiang Khan
If you stay the night in Chiang Khan, there's a pre-dawn tradition of offering sticky rice to monks along Chai Khong Road. Many guesthouses prepare a sticky-rice set for you. Follow the local rhythm, stay respectful, and don't block the line of monks.
Before you go
- Serious warm clothing — mornings on Phu Ruea and Phu Thap Boek get very cold. Pack a hat, gloves, and thick socks.
- Check the car — brakes and tires — the mountain roads are winding and steep, especially the climb up Phu Thap Boek.
- Fill the tank before the mountains — gas stations are spread out. Plan to refuel in Lom Sak and Loei town.
- Book accommodation ahead — Khao Kho, Phu Ruea, and Chiang Khan fill up fast in winter. Book several weeks before you go.
- Carry cash — small shops, markets, and some park entrance fees are easier to handle with cash.
