Phichit 1-Day Itinerary
Bueng Si Fai–Wat Tha Luang–Old Town

Phichit is one of those drive-through towns most people blow past on the way to Nakhon Sawan or Phitsanulok — even though its main sights all sit close together and can easily be done in a single day. This plan strings three stops into one clean route: Wat Tha Luang to pay respects to Luang Pho Phet in the town center, the old-town park to follow the Krai Thong-Chalawan legend, then a sunset finish at the riverside Bueng Si Fai. Times and distances are based on how you'd actually drive it, so there's no backtracking.

Phichit 1-Day Itinerary Bueng Si Fai–Wat Tha Luang–Old Town

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The three main stops on this plan all sit within 10 kilometers of the town center. Wat Tha Luang is right on the Nan River in central Phichit, the old-town park is about 7 kilometers to the south, and Bueng Si Fai is on the west side of town. So the plan is to do the temple visit in town first thing in the morning, follow with the old town through late morning and midday, then finish at Bueng Si Fai in the evening — which happens to be exactly when the lake looks its best.

This day works best if you have your own car or a rented motorbike, since the sights are spread out and public transport around town is thin. With no vehicle you can hire a car between stops, but you'll move much more freely driving yourself. Total distance for the whole day is under 30 kilometers — an easy drive that won't wear you out.

Where you're going today, at a glance

  • Morning — Wat Tha Luang, paying respects to Luang Pho Phet on the Nan River in the town center
  • Late morning — Phichit old-town park: the city pillar shrine, Wat Mahathat, Chalawan Cave
  • Midday–afternoon — back into town for lunch, then rest out of the afternoon heat, or browse the souvenir market
  • Evening — Bueng Si Fai: cycle around the lake, photograph the Chalawan statue, eat at the riverside night market

Route-planning tip

Bueng Si Fai is at its prettiest and liveliest from evening into the night, when the food market, bike rentals, and lakeside music all come alive — so it makes sense as the last stop of the day. The temple and old town are easy to do in the morning, while the sun is still gentle and the crowds haven't shown up yet.

The full day, hour by hour

One day, done

Morning temple in town → late-morning old town → evening at Bueng Si Fai

08:00
Start at Wat Tha Luang, paying respects to Luang Pho Phet by the Nan RiverOn Bussaba Road, Nai Mueang subdistrict, in central Phichit. This is a royal temple, and Luang Pho Phet is a centuries-old bronze Buddha in the Chiang Saen-style subduing Mara posture — the city's most revered image. Come early, while the sun is soft and the riverside is quiet.
08:45
Stroll along the Nan River in front of the temple, photographing the bridge and town viewsThe Nan River is still calm at this hour and the morning light is good for photos. It won't take long before you head off to the next stop.
09:15
Grab breakfast in town — coffee, congee, or noodlesThe Phichit market area has plenty of morning spots. Duck noodles and boat noodles are local favorites — a good fuel-up before heading out to the old town.
10:00
Drive to Phichit old-town park, south of townLocated in Ban Mueang Kao, about 7 km from town — a 15-minute drive. Free entry, open daily. This is the site of old Phichit from the time of Phraya Kotrabong, and you can still see the old moat and earthen walls.
10:20
Pay respects at the Phichit city pillar shrine and the Phraya Kotrabong figureA two-story building: the city pillar shrine is upstairs, and downstairs holds the statue of Phraya Kotrabong, whom locals call Po Pu. It's a spot where Phichit folks come to make wishes.
11:00
Walk around Wat Mahathat, the ancient site at the center of the parkThere's a surviving Lanka-style stupa here, and it's where excavations turned up antiquities, pottery, and Buddha images from several eras. Shady and pleasant to walk.
11:30
Stop by Chalawan Cave, following the Krai Thong legendThere are statues of Krai Thong and Chalawan at the cave mouth, drawn from the Krai Thong epic composed by King Rama II. By legend, Phichit is Chalawan's town — this is a check-in spot to pair with nearby Si Mala Island.
12:15
Drive back into town for lunchAbout 15 minutes back into town. Pick whatever you like — noodles, made-to-order dishes, or one of the riverside river-fish restaurants the Nan River is known for in Phichit.
13:30
Rest out of the afternoon heat — hit a cafe or browse the souvenir marketThe afternoon sun is strong, so take a break in the shade first. Sit at a cafe in town, or pick up Phichit souvenirs like Tha Khoi pomelo (in season) and local sweets.
16:30
Head to Bueng Si Fai, the town's landmark, on the west sideA large freshwater lake in the middle of town, marked by a big Chalawan statue. These days it's been turned into a lively public park with bike rentals, table-and-chair rentals, and a food market.
17:00
Cycle or walk around the lake and watch the sunsetThe cycling-and-running loop around the lake runs more than 10 kilometers; you can rent a bike and ride for fun. The evening breeze is cool and the setting sun reflecting off the water is genuinely lovely.
18:00
Eat at the lakeside night market and close out the day with live musicThere's a food market along the lake, and at certain times you'll find mookata (Thai BBQ hotpot) and a band playing chill tunes by the water — an easy way to end a day in Phichit before heading home.

Why the route runs in this order

The reason for doing Luang Pho Phet at Wat Tha Luang first thing is that it's central, easy to set off from, and the sun isn't hot yet. From there you head south to the old-town park, an open area that's still bearable to walk in the late morning. By noon you're back in town right on time for lunch, you spend the afternoon resting in the shade, and you save Bueng Si Fai for the evening — when the lake is at its prettiest and busiest, with the soft light, the night market, and the breeze off the water. The whole thing wraps up in one loop with no doubling back.

Adjusting the plan for who you're with

Easygoing

With family / older travelers

Lean on Wat Tha Luang and Bueng Si Fai, both easy to walk. Cut down the walking at the old-town park — just stop by the city pillar shrine and Wat Mahathat — and take a longer, relaxed lunch.

Chill

Photo and cafe people

Give Bueng Si Fai more evening time to catch the sunset and the Chalawan statue, and slot in a cafe in town during the afternoon before heading out to the lake.

Drive-through

A stop en route to Phitsanulok / Nakhon Sawan

If you only have half a day, just pick Wat Tha Luang + Bueng Si Fai and you'll have seen Phichit's highlights, then drive on.

Things to know before you go

  • Getting around — your own vehicle is by far the easiest; the sights sit within a 10 km radius, only a few minutes apart by car
  • Free entry — Phichit old-town park is open daily with no admission fee; it's an open public area
  • Temple dress — Wat Tha Luang is a royal temple, so dress modestly; covering shoulders and knees is more appropriate
  • Timing for Bueng Si Fai — busiest from evening into the night, when the market and bike rentals are open; come in the morning and it's much quieter

Straight talk

Phichit is a small town and its sights aren't flashy the way a big city's are. The appeal is in the quiet, the Krai Thong-Chalawan legend woven into the town, and Bueng Si Fai reworked into a riverside park where people come to sit out in the evening. Come expecting that and you'll have a better time than if you're expecting grand spectacle.

FAQ

What can you do in Phichit in one day?

Three main stops fit comfortably into a single day: Wat Tha Luang to pay respects to Luang Pho Phet in the town center; the Phichit old-town park, with its city pillar shrine, Wat Mahathat, and Chalawan Cave following the Krai Thong legend; and a finish at Bueng Si Fai in the evening. They all sit within a 10-kilometer radius, only a few minutes apart by car.

Is the Phichit old-town park far from the town center, and is there an entry fee?

Not far — it's in Ban Mueang Kao, about 7 kilometers from central Phichit, roughly a 15-minute drive. Entry is free with no admission fee, and it's open every day.

What time of day should you go to Bueng Si Fai?

Evening into the night is best, since that's when the lake is liveliest — there's a food market, bike rentals for a loop around the lake, live music by the water, and you get the sunset reflecting off the surface. Midday is hot and fairly quiet.

Can you visit Phichit without your own car?

Yes, but it's harder, since the sights are spread out and public transport around town is thin. Renting a motorbike or hiring a car between stops works. If you can drive yourself, that's the most flexible, since the total distance for the whole day is under 30 kilometers.

Why is Phichit called Chalawan's town?

Because Phichit is the setting of the Krai Thong epic, composed by King Rama II, which tells the story of the crocodile Chalawan. Today there's Chalawan Cave and statues of Krai Thong and Chalawan at the old-town park, plus a large Chalawan statue that serves as the symbol of Bueng Si Fai.
