Ask anyone in Phichit what's for dinner and the most common answer is som tam and grilled chicken. Isan spots are scattered all around town, from pushcart stalls in front of petrol stations to air-conditioned Isan cafes out past the city limits. What the favourites have in common: papaya salad pounded fresh one mortar at a time, fragrant fermented fish, and chicken grilled dry until the skin crisps up, eaten with hot sticky rice. We ate our way through a fair few and kept the ones with genuinely good word of mouth that are still open.
8 Phichit Isan spots locals actually eat at
Je Jit Som Tam
An old-school som tam shop that's been part of Phichit for years, over on Pracha Uthit Road. The tam sua loads up on crab and rich fermented fish, the chicken is grilled dry with crispy skin, and the tom saap with soft pork ribs is sharp and tangy. It packs out in the evening — this is the one Phichit locals think of first.
Tam Charoen
An Isan spot done up cafe-style with an air-conditioned room, where you can pick your spice level. Tam Charoen pounds it fresh and full-flavoured, with bold larb and mixed yam salads. Good for families or anyone who'd rather not sit in the heat. It's out in the Pa Makhab area, about 10 km outside town.
Krua Lang Baan "Nong" — Som Tam, Yam, Larb
An Isan spot in the Dong Pa Kham area with a full lineup of som tam, yam, and larb. They do group sets that feed 4–9 people for just a few hundred baht. Bold and well suited to spice lovers, open from late morning to evening — good for a meet-up with friends or a family meal.
Som Tam Yam Tua Taek by Je Som
A som tam shop in the Dong Pa Kham area known for its yam tua taek, piled high with toppings and seriously sour and spicy. The tray-style tam and the fermented-fish papaya salad are rich and savoury. Open midday to afternoon — a good stop for a spicy lunch.
Pa Daeng Som Tam (in front of the Esso station)
A legendary pushcart stall in front of the Esso station in town. Pounded fresh and fast, with classic Thai-style som tam and a moreish fermented-fish version, plus grilled chicken you can take away. Cheap and cheerful — the go-to takeaway for people in the area.
Som Tam Sut Saap Nua (Ruam Charoen Market)
A som tam stall in the Ruam Charoen Market area, bold and savoury just like the name promises, with rich fermented fish. There's grilled chicken and grilled pork neck to go with it. Good to grab while you're wandering the market or to take away, and friendly on the budget.
Som Tam CK Phichit
A som tam shop that's popular in Phichit's online review circles. Pounded fresh with new ingredients and several recipes to choose from, bold and satisfying, with a comfortable space to sit. Good if you like trying newer spots in town.
Isan Khanan Tae
An Isan spot that leans into traditional flavours — larb, nam tok, koi, and a full-on tom saap. Bold, genuinely Isan-style cooking for anyone missing those countryside flavours, eaten with hot sticky rice.
Tips for ordering well
Be clear about your spice level when you order. Plenty of Phichit spots pound it genuinely hot, Isan standard, so if you can't handle that, ask for "prik noi" (less chilli). If you're after that deep savoury kick, try ordering "pla ra phoem" (extra fermented fish) for a fuller flavour. And order the grilled chicken when you first get hungry — the popular places grill it fresh skewer by skewer, so it takes a while, but it's worth the wait.

Isan dishes worth ordering the full set
If it's your first time at an Isan spot in Phichit, order a spread so you get the full range — something pounded, something grilled, something larb-style. You'll quickly see why people around here eat Isan food at nearly every meal.
- Som tam with crab and fermented fish — the heart of every shop. Sour, salty and savoury from the fermented fish, pounded fresh one mortar at a time, with adjustable heat.
- Grilled chicken — grilled dry until the skin is crispy and the meat stays juicy, dipped in jaew sauce and eaten with hot sticky rice.
- Larb / nam tok — bold with toasted rice and herbs, spicy and sour with a springy bite. Don't skip it if you love heat.
- Tom saap with soft pork ribs — slurped hot, sour and spicy, a good palate cleaner mid-meal.
- Grilled pork neck — fragrant, tender and a little fatty, eaten with jaew and fresh vegetables. The grilled partner to som tam that many shops nail.
In town vs out of town — which to pick
In town, quick and convenient
Je Jit Som Tam, Pa Daeng Som Tam, and the stall in Ruam Charoen Market — good for a fast bite or takeaway, close to accommodation in the centre of town.
Isan cafe, sit and relax
Tam Charoen in the Pa Makhab area — air-conditioned, nice atmosphere, pick your own spice level. Good for families or a long meal, just a short drive out of town.
