Phichit Nature Trip Bueng Si Fai, the Nan River & Pomelo Orchards

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

A lot of people drive through Phichit on the way to Chiang Mai or Phitsanulok without stopping, even though the town has plenty of easygoing nature spots that fit a short weekend. The main draw, Bueng Si Fai, was recently renovated and now has a long cycling track that loops the whole lake. The Nan River, which cuts right through the center of town, has lovely riverside spots for an evening walk. And just outside town you'll find the orchards that grow Tha Khoi pomelo, which carries a GI mark. We've laid this plan out so you can actually follow it — no rushing, with room to rest and take photos.

The 2-Day, 1-Night Plan at a Glance

Day one stays in town — Bueng Si Fai in the morning when the air is nice for cycling and feeding the fish, then out to the Nan River in the evening for the sunset. Day two heads just outside town to the Tha Khoi pomelo orchards near the old city and Pho Prathap Chang, with a stop at the old-city park before heading home. Having your own car is the most convenient, but you can still reach plenty of spots around town by bike.

  • Day 1 — Bueng Si Fai (cycling + feeding the fish + freshwater aquarium) → lunch → Princess Mother Park → evening on the Nan River, Wat Tha Luang
  • Day 2 — Tha Khoi pomelo orchards, taste and buy some to take home → Phichit Old City Park → grab local treats before heading back

Day 1 — Bueng Si Fai + the Nan River

Bueng Si Fai is a large freshwater lake in the center of town that doubles as both a public park and Phichit's main check-in spot. It's open every day from before dawn until evening, with free entry. Early mornings are cool and pleasant — a good time to cycle or walk for exercise before the sun gets harsh.

Day 1

Bueng Si Fai & the Nan River

06:30
Cycle around Bueng Si FaiThe Saranchit Mongkhonsuk cycling track runs roughly 10 km around the lake. Early on the air is cool and the view across the water and open sky is wide and clear. If you didn't bring a bike, there are rentals on site, plus pedal boats.
08:00
Feed the fish + visit the Bueng Si Fai freshwater aquariumThere are tons of fish in the lake — buy fish food by the bridge, which kids love. The freshwater aquarium nearby is small but a relaxing walk-through.
09:30
Stroll Princess Mother Park, photograph the giant crocodileThis 170-rai commemorative park sits right on the lake, with shaded pavilions, lotus flowers, a pier reaching out over the water, and a large statue of Chalawan the crocodile, the town's symbol.
12:00
Lunch in townHead back into town for lunch — there are plenty of made-to-order shops and old-school noodle places around the market. The midday sun in Phichit is fairly strong, so rest in the shade for a bit.
16:30
Walk along the Nan River + Wat Tha LuangThe Nan River runs right through the center of town. In the evening the riverside walk catches a nice breeze. Stop by riverside Wat Tha Luang to pay respects to Luang Pho Phet, the Buddha image that's a symbol of Phichit.
18:00
Watch the sunset by the riverFind a spot along the Nan River to sit and watch the sky change color — the calmest, prettiest part of the town's day.

Tip

If you come in the hot season (Mar–May), skip walking around Bueng Si Fai at midday — it's exposed with little shade. Cycling in the morning or evening is far more fun. Bring water and a hat.

Day 2 — Tha Khoi Pomelo Orchards + Old City Park

Tha Khoi pomelo is an heirloom variety from Phichit, first grown around Ban Tha Khoi in the old-city subdistrict more than a hundred years ago. The fruit is round, with pink-tinged flesh and a sweet-tart flavor, and it carries the province's GI mark. The harvest mostly runs from around October to April, so come in that window and you can eat it fresh from the orchard. Off-season, you can still find processed versions and souvenirs.

Day 2

Pomelo Orchards & the Old City

08:30
Head out to the Tha Khoi pomelo orchardsThe orchards are spread around the old-city subdistrict and Pho Prathap Chang district. Some open for visitors to look around, taste, and buy. We'd suggest calling ahead to check that they're open that day and have ripe fruit — especially off-season.
10:30
Buy pomelo and souvenirs for the roadBuying straight from the orchard or a roadside stall gets you a better price than the mall. Pick fruit with taut skin that feels heavy in the hand — that's how you get firm, juicy flesh.
12:00
LunchFind a place in town or a roadside spot near the old city to refuel before carrying on.
14:00
Phichit Old City ParkThe old city sits about 7 km from the present-day town, with a moat, earthen walls, and traces of the ancient settlement. The atmosphere is shady and pleasant — an easy walk and photo stop to cap off a nature-and-history trip.
16:00
Pick up souvenirs before heading homeBeyond pomelo, Phichit has local treats like sweets and regional snacks. Swing by a market in town before you set off.

FAQ

How many days do you need for a nature trip in Phichit?

Two days and one night is just right. Spend the first day at Bueng Si Fai and along the Nan River in town, and the second heading out to the Tha Khoi pomelo orchards and the Old City Park. If you only have a single day, focus on Bueng Si Fai in the morning and the Nan River in the evening.

Is Bueng Si Fai free to enter, and what are the hours?

Bueng Si Fai is a public park with free entry. It's open every day from roughly 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with a cycling track of about 10 km around the lake, fish feeding, and a freshwater aquarium to walk through.

When can you eat Tha Khoi pomelo fresh at the orchards?

Tha Khoi pomelo mostly fruits from October to April. Come in that window and you have a good chance of tasting and buying it fresh from the orchard. Off-season, call the orchard ahead to check whether there's fruit to pick.

Can you do a Phichit nature trip without your own car?

In town it's easy, since Bueng Si Fai, the Nan River, and Wat Tha Luang are all close together — you can cycle or grab a ride around town. But the day you head out to the orchards outside town is much more convenient with a car.
