Phichit-Phitsanulok 3-Day Trip
Temple Hopping in Lower Northern Thailand

Phichit and Phitsanulok sit about 70 km apart, roughly an hour's drive, so they pair up easily into a temple-hopping trip across lower northern Thailand. Day one you base yourself in Phichit, pay respects to Luang Pho Phet, then swing by the Chalawan legend at Bueng Si Fai. After that you cross over to Phitsanulok to bow before Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, which many people call one of the most beautiful Buddha images in Thailand. Here's a 3-day, 2-night timeline that's realistic to walk on the ground, with no rushing.

Phichit-Phitsanulok 3-Day Trip Temple Hopping in Lower Northern Thailand

πŸ”„ Updated 21 Jun 2026

The Phichit-Phitsanulok route is an easy one for anyone who loves temple trips, because the two towns sit on the same line. Highway 117 runs straight for about 70 km and takes a little over an hour from downtown Phichit to downtown Phitsanulok. If you drive your own car or rent one it's a breeze, and if you don't have a car, northern-line trains pass through both provinces every day.

We've slotted day one and the morning of day two on the Phichit side, ticking off Wat Tha Luang, Bueng Si Fai and the Old City Park, then shifting base over to Phitsanulok for the last two nights. Phitsanulok town has more choice for hotels and restaurants, and you can do the Wat Yai temple cluster at an easy pace without driving back and forth.

Day 1 β€” Phichit: Luang Pho Phet + the Chalawan legend

Day 1

Phichit: Wat Tha Luang Β· Bueng Si Fai Β· Old City Park

09:00
Arrive in Phichit town, start at Wat Tha LuangThe town's signature riverside temple on the Nan River, home to Luang Pho Phet, a bronze Buddha in the Maravijaya posture seated in the diamond cross-legged pose, Chiang Saen style, several hundred years old. Phichit locals hold it in deep reverence. The ordination hall opens around 06:30-18:00.
10:30
Walk the temple museum and the riverside pavilionWat Tha Luang hosts the traditional long-boat races for the royal trophy in early September. If you happen to come during the event it's especially lively.
12:00
Lunch β€” local Phichit eats in townTry Phichit's old-recipe noodles, or a restaurant along the Nan River. Around 40-70 THB a plate.
14:00
Bueng Si Fai + the Phaya Chalawan sculptureA large freshwater lake of the central region, with a nearly 40-metre Phaya Chalawan crocodile statue as the landmark, drawn from the Krai Thong-Chalawan legend. Stroll the lakeside garden, feed the fish, and stick around for sunset.
16:30
Phichit Old City ParkRemains of the city wall, moat and old chedis set in an arboretum. Shady and relaxed, easy to wander and take photos to close out the day.

Day 2 β€” Cross over to Phitsanulok for Phra Phuttha Chinnarat

On the morning of day two, pack up and leave Phichit, drive north on Highway 117 for about an hour and you reach Phitsanulok town. The highlight is a cluster of three temples beside the Nan River that sit next to each other within walking distance: Wat Yai (Phra Si Rattana Mahathat), Wat Nang Phaya and Wat Ratchaburana. It makes for a very worthwhile half-day temple trip.

Day 2

Phitsanulok: Wat Yai Β· Wat Nang Phaya Β· Wat Ratchaburana

09:00
Leave Phichit, drive up to PhitsanulokHighway 117 runs straight, about 70 km, roughly 1 hour.
10:30
Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat (Wat Yai), bow before Phra Phuttha ChinnaratPhra Phuttha Chinnarat is a Maravijaya-posture Buddha that many consider one of the most beautiful in Thailand, housed in Phitsanulok's signature viharn. Open for worship around 06:30-18:00 every day.

Good to know

Photography inside the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat viharn is allowed, but dress modestly β€” no shorts or spaghetti-strap tops. On religious holidays and around New Year it gets very crowded, so allow extra time to find parking.

Day 3 β€” Wat Chulamani + Chan Palace before heading back

On the final day, tick off the historical sites around Phitsanulok that aren't far out before you drive back. If you started from Bangkok or the central region, you can head south back through Phichit and it lines up nicely.

Day 3

Phitsanulok: Wat Chulamani Β· Chan Palace

09:00
Wat ChulamaniAn old temple predating the Sukhothai era, about 5 km from town, with a Lopburi-style prang. This is where King Borommatrailokkanat once ordained as a monk. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful.
10:30
Chan PalaceA historical site that was the birthplace and residence of King Naresuan the Great, back when Phitsanulok was a frontier city. There's a shrine to King Naresuan to pay respects at.
12:00
Lunch + Phitsanulok souvenirsPick up Bang Krathum dried bananas and moo yor (Thai sausage), the famous local souvenirs, before you head home.
13:30
Set off homeIf you're heading south back through Phichit, you can stop to restock on food or pay your respects to Luang Pho Phet one more time before getting on the road home.

Getting around and where to stay

  • Self-drive β€” the most convenient. Phichit to Phitsanulok is about 70 km on Highway 117, roughly 1 hour, and the temples within Phitsanulok town are all close together.
  • Northern-line train β€” trains pass through both Phichit and Phitsanulok stations every day, good if you don't have a car. Use local hired transport once you're in town.
  • Where to base β€” we recommend the first night in Phichit, then moving to Phitsanulok for two nights, since Phitsanulok town has more hotels and restaurants to choose from.
  • Phitsanulok hotel location β€” near Wat Yai or near the train station, handy for walking to the temples and finding food.

You can tweak the plan

If you only have 2 days, drop day three and roll Wat Chulamani and Chan Palace into the morning you head back instead. Or if you want to focus on Phichit alone, check out the 1-day and 2-day, 1-night Phichit plans for more options.

FAQ

How far apart are Phichit and Phitsanulok, and is the drive long?

From downtown Phichit to downtown Phitsanulok is about 70 km along Highway 117, a little over an hour by car. That's close enough to pair them into an easy cross-province trip.

How many days is right for a Phichit-Phitsanulok temple trip?

Three days, two nights is just right. Day one covers Phichit (Wat Tha Luang, Bueng Si Fai, the Old City Park), day two crosses over to Phra Phuttha Chinnarat and the temple cluster in Phitsanulok town, and day three covers Wat Chulamani and Chan Palace before heading back. If you're short on time, 2 days and 1 night works too.

What hours are Phra Phuttha Chinnarat and Luang Pho Phet open for worship?

Both are open for worship every day, roughly 06:30-18:00. On religious holidays and around New Year it gets very crowded, so morning visits mean fewer people and a better atmosphere.

Which town should I stay in, Phichit or Phitsanulok?

We suggest the first night in Phichit after paying respects to Luang Pho Phet, then moving to Phitsanulok for two nights, since Phitsanulok town has more hotels and restaurants and sits close to all the main temples.

Can I do this trip without a private car?

Yes. Northern-line trains pass through both Phichit and Phitsanulok stations every day, so you can take the train across the provinces and use local hired transport in town. But if you want the flexibility to stop at several spots, renting a car to drive yourself is more convenient.
