What makes Phrae so good for budget travelers is how compact it is. The old town's top draws — Kham Chao Luang mansion, Baan Wongburi, and several historic temples — all sit within a few kilometers of each other. The farther spots, Wat Phra That Cho Hae and Phae Mueang Phi, are easy day-trip rides by rented motorbike. This plan keeps costs to around 1,500–2,000 THB per person (bus fare not included). Share a room with a friend and it gets cheaper still.
Getting to Phrae on the Cheap
The cheapest option is an overnight bus from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal — about 8 hours, tickets around 470–550 THB. Operators include Pornpiritour, Bussarakam Tour, Sombat Tour, and BKSP 999. Most depart in the evening and arrive in the morning, which saves you one night's accommodation. From Phrae's bus terminal, hop on a songthaew or motorbike taxi into the old town.
Book Your Bus Ticket in Advance
Buses fill up fast on long weekends. Book online through sites like busonlineticket or busx to secure your seat — prices are sometimes lower than buying at the counter.
Book the activities in your Phrae trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.

Getting Around Town Without Spending Much
- On foot — the old town is very walkable. Kham Chao Luang, Baan Wongburi, and the historic temples are all close together, so you barely need to spend on transport.
- Rented motorbike — a few hundred THB per day. The best option if you're heading out to Cho Hae and Phae Mueang Phi. Easy riding, low traffic.
- Songthaew (shared truck) — runs around town and to the bus terminal. Ask your guesthouse about stops and fares.
- Motorbike taxi — available at the bus terminal. Handy when you have bags or need to reach somewhere the songthaews don't cover.
Estimated Total Budget
Here's a rough 3-day, 2-night breakdown (bus fare to/from Bangkok of around 940–1,100 THB not included): accommodation for 2 nights runs roughly 1,000–1,400 THB (half that if you share a room); food comes to about 200–300 THB per day; motorbike rental plus petrol for one day is around 300–400 THB; all entrance fees combined are under 100 THB; add a little for small souvenirs. Total: a 3-day Phrae trip is very doable at 1,500–2,000 THB per person.
Squeeze the Budget Further
The two biggest savers are sleeping in a hostel dorm and splitting the motorbike rental with a friend. Food in Phrae is already cheap — no need to skimp on that.
