Phrae's charm is scale: everything fits. The inner old town is ringed by an ancient moat and walls, with Kham Chao Luang, Baan Wongburi, and several old temples clustered within a 10–15 minute walk of each other. Cafes slot into teak houses and original shopfronts along the same streets. This plan alternates between 'heritage walk' and 'sit and have coffee' so you don't wear yourself out -- good for anyone who wants strong photos and a relaxed pace.
Before You Go
Most heritage houses close around 17:00, and some shut on Mondays. Start a little earlier than you think you need to. If you can time your trip to Saturday, you will also catch the Kad Kong Kao walking street market, which runs Saturday evenings only.
Day 1 — Inner Old Town & Teak Mansions
Day 1 keeps you inside the old-town walls. The heritage houses and temples are close enough that you can park once and walk the whole loop, with a single cafe stop in the afternoon to rest your feet.
Heritage Houses, Old Town Walk & Afternoon Coffee
Straight Talk on the Night Market
Kad Kong Kao only happens on Saturday evenings, and it is fairly small. If you are visiting mid-week, do not count on any walking street -- plan a proper sit-down dinner at a local restaurant in town instead.
Book the activities in your Phrae trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want — prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 2 — Cafe-Hopping + Wat Phra That Cho Hae
Day 2 is mostly cafes, bookended by the town's most important temple first thing in the morning. After that, it is a slow, coffee-fuelled loop through heritage wooden buildings and old shopfronts.

Cafes in Phrae Featured in This Plan
All of these are in or very near the inner old town -- short walks or quick drives between them. Prices are approximate ranges based on standard menu items and may vary.
Charlotte Hut Coffee & Tea Bar
The most popular in-town cafe among Phrae locals. Small but well-styled, with coffee, tea, and pastries. Signature drinks and matcha options are the highlights. Good photo corners throughout.
Ho: BAKE & CRAFT CAFE
Set inside a vintage wooden house with a classic Thai feel. Focuses on house-baked pastries. The atmosphere is photo-friendly and genuinely relaxed.
Je Bar Coffee & Pastry
Coffee and pastry shop with house-baked bread. Quality is consistently good. The kind of place where you sit longer than you planned.
Le Gong Kao Cafe de Phraeris
A wooden-house cafe in the Kad Kong Kao neighbourhood, with drinks and desserts on the menu. Works well as a cafe stop during an old-town walk.
On The FENCE
A small cafe set among wooden buildings, with a quiet and shaded feel. Good for anyone who wants to avoid the busier spots.
Cafe-Hopping Tips
Most Phrae cafes close around 17:00 -- this is not a late-night coffee town. If you are planning to hit several places in one day, start before 10:00 and budget roughly an hour per cafe.
Heritage Houses & Temples in This Plan
Kham Chao Luang
A century-old Thai–European mansion covered in gingerbread wooden fretwork. The main photo landmark in Phrae.
Baan Wongburi
A pink Rama V-era teak mansion with antique family heirlooms displayed inside. Every room is a usable photo angle.
Baan Prathapjai (Hundred-Pillar House)
An all-teak house with a large number of original teak pillars. A short drive outside the inner old town toward Amphoe Long.
Wat Chom Sawan
A Shan–Burmese teak viharn with intricate carved ceilings and woodwork. Essential for anyone interested in architecture.
Wat Phra That Cho Hae
Phrae's sacred city temple and the Tiger birth-year pillar. About 9 km outside town -- go early for a comfortable visit.
Getting Around & Good to Know
- Your own vehicle is easiest -- the heritage houses in the inner town are walkable from each other, but Wat Phra That Cho Hae and Baan Prathapjai are outside town and need transport.
- Rented motorbike works well -- available in town, good for solo travellers or pairs. Distances within the old town are very short.
- Time it to Saturday -- if you want Kad Kong Kao walking street, count the days carefully; it only runs Saturday evenings.
- Watch the 17:00 cutoff -- heritage houses and most cafes close around 17:00. Do not leave key spots for late afternoon.
- Come in cool season -- Phrae in November through February has genuinely pleasant weather; midday walks are comfortable.
