Phrae 2-Day Plan
Cafes + Old Town

Phrae is a city made for slow walking. Antique teak mansions line the inner old-town streets, while a new wave of cafes has moved into those same old wooden buildings and shophouses -- usually just a few minutes stroll apart. This plan is built for cafe fans and heritage-architecture lovers, with an hour-by-hour timeline across 2 days, covering places that are actually open.

Phrae 2-Day Plan Cafes + Old Town

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Phrae's charm is scale: everything fits. The inner old town is ringed by an ancient moat and walls, with Kham Chao Luang, Baan Wongburi, and several old temples clustered within a 10–15 minute walk of each other. Cafes slot into teak houses and original shopfronts along the same streets. This plan alternates between 'heritage walk' and 'sit and have coffee' so you don't wear yourself out -- good for anyone who wants strong photos and a relaxed pace.

Before You Go

Most heritage houses close around 17:00, and some shut on Mondays. Start a little earlier than you think you need to. If you can time your trip to Saturday, you will also catch the Kad Kong Kao walking street market, which runs Saturday evenings only.

Day 1 — Inner Old Town & Teak Mansions

Day 1 keeps you inside the old-town walls. The heritage houses and temples are close enough that you can park once and walk the whole loop, with a single cafe stop in the afternoon to rest your feet.

Day 1

Heritage Houses, Old Town Walk & Afternoon Coffee

08:30
Start at Kham Chao LuangA century-old mansion blending Thai and European architecture -- carved gingerbread wooden fretwork, hip roof, the whole look. Open roughly 08:30–17:00, entry costs a few tens of THB. Come early for good light and fewer people.
09:30
Walk to Baan WongburiA pink gingerbread-style teak mansion from the Rama V era. Inside: antique furniture and family heirlooms on display, and photo angles in almost every direction. Entry around 30 THB.
10:30
Wat Pong Sunan + old city wallsA temple inside the old-town ring. Continue walking to Pratu Chai gate and along the old moat. Short distances -- good for soaking up the neighbourhood pace.
11:30
Lunch: Khanom Jeen Nam NgiaoThe rice-noodle curry that Phrae locals actually eat. Plenty of spots in town, starting from 30–50 THB a bowl. Have it with crispy pork crackling and fresh vegetables.
13:00
Afternoon coffee in townHead to Charlotte Hut Coffee & Tea Bar -- a popular in-town cafe with a good interior for photos. Coffee and pastries run 45–70 THB. Open roughly 08:00–17:00.
14:30
Baan Prathapjai (The Hundred-Pillar House)An entire house built from teak, with over a hundred original teak columns. Slightly outside the inner old town toward Amphoe Long. Open 08:00–17:00; entry for Thai nationals around 15 THB.
16:00
Wat Chom Sawan — Shan/Burmese woodworkA teak viharn in Shan–Burmese style with intricate carved ceilings and woodwork. One of the most architecturally interesting temples in Phrae -- do not skip it if you care about craft.
17:30
Kad Kong Kao evening market (Saturday only)Phrae walking-street market, open roughly 16:00–21:00 on Saturday evenings only. Local street food and handmade goods. If your visit is not on a Saturday, swap this slot for a local restaurant dinner in town instead.

Straight Talk on the Night Market

Kad Kong Kao only happens on Saturday evenings, and it is fairly small. If you are visiting mid-week, do not count on any walking street -- plan a proper sit-down dinner at a local restaurant in town instead.

FAQ

How many days do you need for Phrae cafes and old town?

Two days, one night is the right amount. Day 1 covers the heritage houses and old-town temples; Day 2 is temple-then-cafes and the Cho Hae pillar. With only one day, you can still do the inner old town and two or three cafes comfortably.

Do Phrae cafes stay open late?

Most do not. In-town cafes typically open in the morning and close around 17:00. If you are planning to visit several, start before 10:00 and budget about an hour per stop.

Is Kad Kong Kao open every day?

No -- it is a Saturday-evening-only walking street market, running roughly 16:00–21:00, and it is fairly small. If you are visiting on a weekday, skip the expectation of a night market and book a restaurant instead.

Is entry to Phrae heritage houses expensive?

Not at all. Most charge in the tens of THB per person -- Baan Prathapjai is around 15 THB for Thai nationals, Baan Wongburi around 30 THB. Very accessible.

Can you walk the Phrae old town, or do you need a vehicle?

The heritage houses and temples inside the inner old-town walls are all walkable from each other. But Wat Phra That Cho Hae and Baan Prathapjai are outside town -- you will want a car or rented motorbike for those.
