What makes Phrae great for families is that everything sits close together. You can walk between the sights in the old town, while Phae Mueang Phi and Cho Hae are only 10β15 km from the center, just a few minutes by car. That's a big help for little ones who can't handle long drives. We've arranged the plan to alternate: cultural sights in the morning when it's still cool, then save the activities where kids burn off energy for the afternoon.
Before you set out
Many of the teak houses are old buildings with wooden floors and steep stairs. Bring shoes that slip off easily (some houses ask you to remove them before going up) and keep a hand on small children. At Phae Mueang Phi the midday sun is strong, so pack a hat and drinking water.
Day 1 β Old town, teak mansions, then a kid-friendly cafe
Old town + teak mansions + kids' cafe
Day one stays mostly in town. The walk between Khum Chao Luang, Baan Vongburi, and the restaurants is very short. If you have a stroller you can push it along the sidewalks, but some stretches are uneven, so it's easier to carry younger kids part of the way.
Book the activities in your Phrae trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want β prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 2 β Phae Mueang Phi, Cho Hae, then a farm cafe
Nature + temple + farm
Day 3 β Indigo dyeing, souvenirs, head home
Crafts + souvenirs
What the kids loved most
Phae Mueang Phi
Earth pillars and cliffs in strange shapes, like a movie set. Kids love exploring it, the entry is cheap, and it doesn't take long.
The Pool Sky
A water park with a slide where kids can play all afternoon while parents sit at the cafe and watch up close.
The Phrae Farm
Open space, fruit gardens, and photo spots that let kids run around and burn off energy.
Mo hom dyeing workshop, Baan Thung Hong
Kids tie-dye the cloth themselves, design their own pattern, and take home a keepsake.
Easy foods for kids in Phrae
Khanom sen nam ngiao (clear broth / coconut broth)
Phrae's nam ngiao isn't heavily spiced. Order it with clear or coconut broth so kids can eat it, and keep the chili on the side.
Khao soi gai (chicken khao soi)
Noodles in a coconut curry broth, milder than other dishes. Order it without the roasted chili paste for kids.
Khao kaep
Thin, crispy rice crackers, a local snack. Kids love the crunch, and they make a good souvenir too.
Sai ua and pork rinds with sticky rice
Fragrant grilled herb sausage that's easy to eat with sticky rice, and kids can pick it up themselves.
Phrae-style noodle soup
A mild clear-broth noodle soup that's easy to order when kids don't feel like trying anything unfamiliar β a safe bet.
Tips for a smooth Phrae trip with kids
- Start early, do the outdoor spots before noon β the sun is strong at Phae Mueang Phi and Cho Hae midday, so going early is more comfortable for kids and adults alike.
- Plan no more than 3β4 stops a day β Phrae's sights are close together, true, but little kids tire fast, so leave time to rest and nap.
- Pack the essentials β a hat, drinking water, wet wipes, and snacks in your bag for waits in line or when the kids get hungry on the road.
- Your own car is the most flexible β Phae Mueang Phi, Cho Hae, and the farm are outside town, and public transport isn't convenient for families. Renting or chartering a car gives you more freedom.
- Check the kids' cafe opening days first β some only open SaturdayβSunday, so call or check their page before you set out so you don't miss out.
