Phrae With Kids
3 Days, 2 Nights the Whole Family Will Enjoy

Phrae is a small, easy town to get around. The distances between sights are short, so there's no long time in the car and the kids don't get fussy. This plan pairs the things grown-ups love, like the old teak mansions and Wat Phra That Cho Hae, with spots where kids can actually run around: the Phae Mueang Phi badlands, a farm cafe, and a water park. We fit it all into 3 days and 2 nights without rushing.

What makes Phrae great for families is that everything sits close together. You can walk between the sights in the old town, while Phae Mueang Phi and Cho Hae are only 10–15 km from the center, just a few minutes by car. That's a big help for little ones who can't handle long drives. We've arranged the plan to alternate: cultural sights in the morning when it's still cool, then save the activities where kids burn off energy for the afternoon.

Before you set out

Many of the teak houses are old buildings with wooden floors and steep stairs. Bring shoes that slip off easily (some houses ask you to remove them before going up) and keep a hand on small children. At Phae Mueang Phi the midday sun is strong, so pack a hat and drinking water.

Day 1 β€” Old town, teak mansions, then a kid-friendly cafe

Day 1

Old town + teak mansions + kids' cafe

09:00
Start at Khum Chao Luang (the Phrae city museum) in the heart of the old townA pale-blue European-style building that's easy to walk through, with a wide courtyard where kids can wander and the photos come out great
10:00
Walk on to Baan Vongburi, a pink teak mansion over 120 years oldOpen 09:00–16:00, entry 30 THB for adults and 10 THB for kids. The house is full of objects, so tell the kids to look but not touch
11:30
Lunch on khanom sen nam ngiao with khao kaep in the old-town quarterPhrae's nam ngiao isn't very spicy, so kids can eat it. If you're worried about heat, ask for the chili on the side
13:30
Head to Baan Pratabjai (the House of a Hundred Pillars), with over 130 huge teak posts under the floorOpen 08:00–17:00, entry 15 THB for Thais. Kids love walking among the giant pillars and there's plenty of room to run
15:30
Finish at The Pool Sky, a cafe with a water-play area for kidsWater play is 99 THB per person with no time limit, and there's poolside seating so parents can sip a coffee and watch the kids up close
18:00
Dinner in town, then back to the hotel to restKids who've played in the water all afternoon usually fall asleep easily

Day one stays mostly in town. The walk between Khum Chao Luang, Baan Vongburi, and the restaurants is very short. If you have a stroller you can push it along the sidewalks, but some stretches are uneven, so it's easier to carry younger kids part of the way.

Day 3 β€” Indigo dyeing, souvenirs, head home

Day 3

Crafts + souvenirs

09:00
Go to Baan Thung Hong, the indigo (mo hom) cloth district about 4 km from townMany houses let visitors try tie-dyeing the cloth themselves, kids can design their own pattern, and you take home a handkerchief or tote bag as a keepsake
10:30
Do the dyeing and wait for the cloth to dry, then browse for mo hom shirtsAsk ahead which houses run workshops, since some take groups in set slots. The cost depends on the piece you make
12:00

Tips for a smooth Phrae trip with kids

  • Start early, do the outdoor spots before noon β€” the sun is strong at Phae Mueang Phi and Cho Hae midday, so going early is more comfortable for kids and adults alike.
  • Plan no more than 3–4 stops a day β€” Phrae's sights are close together, true, but little kids tire fast, so leave time to rest and nap.
  • Pack the essentials β€” a hat, drinking water, wet wipes, and snacks in your bag for waits in line or when the kids get hungry on the road.
  • Your own car is the most flexible β€” Phae Mueang Phi, Cho Hae, and the farm are outside town, and public transport isn't convenient for families. Renting or chartering a car gives you more freedom.
  • Check the kids' cafe opening days first β€” some only open Saturday–Sunday, so call or check their page before you set out so you don't miss out.

FAQ

How many days are right for visiting Phrae with young kids?

Three days and two nights is just about right, since the sights in and around town are close together and there's no long time in the car. Day one is the old town and teak mansions, day two covers Phae Mueang Phi and Cho Hae, and day three is the indigo-dyeing activity and souvenir shopping before you head home.

Is Phae Mueang Phi suitable for kids? Is it dangerous?

It's suitable for kids who can walk on their own; the path is sandy soil and easy to walk. Entry is 20 THB for adults and 10 THB for kids, open 08:00–17:00. That said, some viewpoints have fairly high edges, so keep a hand on small children and don't let them run near the edge.

Can grandparents make it up to Wat Phra That Cho Hae? Is the walk manageable?

It's easily manageable. Wat Phra That Cho Hae has a lift for the elderly and wheelchair users (20 THB), open 06:00–19:00, so you can take older relatives and small kids up to pay respects without climbing all the stairs.

Is there anywhere in Phrae for kids to play in the water or run around?

Yes. The Pool Sky is a cafe with a water-play area and a slide, around 99 THB per person with no time limit. The Phrae Farm is a farm cafe with open space where kids can run around. At both, parents can sit with a coffee and watch the kids up close.

Can kids handle spicy northern food? Which dishes are easy for them?

A lot of northern dishes are milder than you'd think. Khanom sen nam ngiao can be ordered with clear or coconut broth and the chili on the side; chicken khao soi and clear-broth noodle soup are also easy choices for kids. And the crispy khao kaep crackers are usually a hit and make a good souvenir.
