If you have got four days off and want to go north without fighting for a parking spot, the Phrae-Nan corridor is the answer. Phrae is a town most people drive straight through on their way to Nan, but there is a full day of things here -- century-old teak mansions, indigo workshops in Ban Thung Hong, coffee in the old town. Nan itself is nature and culture running in parallel: Wat Phumin in the city centre, then paddy terraces and mountain villages out toward Pua, Bo Kluea, and Sapan. This itinerary starts in Phrae and works north, so the last days are spent with mountain views all around.
Route and Getting There
From Bangkok, driving to Phrae takes roughly 7-8 hours via Nakhon Sawan, Phitsanulok, and Uttaradit -- enter at Amphoe Den Chai, then turn onto Highway 101 into town. The Phrae-to-Nan leg runs entirely on 101, about 118 km, taking around 2 hours. The final stretch winds up into the hills but the road surface is good and not difficult to drive.
- Own car -- By far the most practical option for this route. Many of Nan's highlights (Pua, Bo Kluea, Sapan) are outside town and public transport does not reach them conveniently.
- Fly into Nan, rent a car -- Daily flights run Bangkok-Nan Nakhon Airport. If you do not want the long drive from Bangkok, fly in, rent a car at the airport, and run the itinerary in reverse from Nan down to Phrae.
- Bus or van -- Coaches run from Bangkok to both Phrae and Nan. But once you arrive, you will still need to rent or hire a car to get around, especially for the mountain villages.
Before You Head Up
Fill up on petrol before the Pua-Bo Kluea-Sapan stretch -- stations are far apart and mobile signal drops out in places. Download offline maps before you leave.
Book the activities in your Phrae trip ahead
Booking online ahead on Klook or GetYourGuide is usually cheaper than the gate and skips the queue. Pick only the experiences you actually want β prices and availability are shown live on each site.
Day 1 -- Phrae Old Town
Walking Phrae Old Town -- Teak Houses and Temples
Day one is about resting your legs after the drive and taking Phrae at a gentle pace. The town gets warm during the day but cools quickly, so the evening hours are when the atmosphere really comes alive. Do not miss khao khaep (Phrae's crispy rice crackers) and kao nom jeen nam ngiao -- the northern-style rice noodles in rich pork-tomato broth, sold around the morning market.
Day 2 -- Indigo Village, Then Up to Nan
Phra That Cho Hae -- Indigo at Ban Thung Hong -- Drive to Nan
Day 3 -- Nan City, Then Up to Pua-Bo Kluea
Wat Phumin -- Pua -- Bo Kluea -- Stay in Sapan
This is the most driving-heavy day, but also the most rewarding. You get Nan's cultural side in the morning and its mountain landscape in the afternoon. The Pua-Bo Kluea-Sapan stretch is what people come back for -- partly because waking up to valley fog is exactly as good as it looks in photos, and partly because the drive back down in the dark is not fun. Staying overnight in Sapan is the comfortable choice.
Booking Sapan Accommodation
Homestays and view rooms in Sapan and Bo Kluea sell out fast in cool season (Nov-Jan). If you are timing the trip for morning fog, book weeks ahead -- riverside rooms and mountain-view rooms go first.
Day 4 -- Morning Fog, Then Head Home
Catch the Morning Fog -- Streamside Cafe -- Drive Home
No need to pack the last day with activities -- the mountain descent takes time and focus. Take in the morning fog, have a slow coffee by the water, then ease your way back. If you drove up from Bangkok, budget for another long stretch of driving in the afternoon: Nan and Phrae to the capital is still several hours away.
Adjust the Plan to Your Time
Only 3 Days / 2 Nights
Trim Phrae old town to half a day and push straight up to Nan. Focus on Wat Phumin, Pua, Bo Kluea, and one night in Sapan.
Want to Go Slower
Stretch to 5 days -- two nights in Phrae to really cover the cafes and old town, then move up to Nan without rushing.
Fog Season Trip
Nov-Jan brings the coolest air and the best morning fog around Sapan and Bo Kluea. Peak season, though -- book accommodation well in advance.
