Prachinburi–Bangkok Day Trip
Herbal Shopping, Temples, Back by Evening

Prachinburi sits only about 130 km from Bangkok, an hour and a half to two hours by car, which makes it a great one-day round trip. The most popular route is to tour the yellow Abhaibhubejhr building and shop for genuine herbal products in the morning, then swing out through Chachoengsao on the way back to pay respects to Luang Pho Sothon. It's a merit-making and healthy-living trip that wraps up in a single day. We've laid out the route as a loop so you never double back, leaving Bangkok early and easing back into the city by evening.

Prachinburi–Bangkok Day Trip Herbal Shopping, Temples, Back by Evening

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

This trip is built for anyone who wants a short break close to Bangkok with good souvenirs and a temple visit to lift the spirits. The main stops are in Prachinburi — the Abhaibhubejhr building and the genuine herbal shop. On the way home you don't drive straight back to Bangkok; you loop out through Chachoengsao to stop at Wat Sothon first, so you hit three provinces in one day without backtracking. It works best if you drive yourself, but there's a way to do it without a car too, which we'll get to.

Why pair Prachinburi and Bangkok like this

Prachinburi and Bangkok are close enough for an easy day return, and there are good things to stop for along the way. The main route is Motorway 7 (Bangkok–Chonburi), then turning onto Highway 359 into Prachinburi. On the way out you drive straight to the town of Prachinburi first; on the way back you drop down Highway 304 through Chachoengsao to stop for Luang Pho Sothon, then loop back into Bangkok via Bang Na–Trat. It forms a neat circle, so you never retrace the same road.

  • Distance Bangkok to Prachinburi is about 130 km, roughly 1.5–2 hours of driving; the return through Chachoengsao adds only a little.
  • Good for the spiritually inclined who want to pay respects, plus health-minded travelers who want genuine herbal products, and anyone with only one day to spare.
  • When to go this herbal-and-temple trip works year-round; it doesn't depend on the rainy or dry season.

Leaving early pays off

If you leave Bangkok around 7 a.m., you'll reach Prachinburi before mid-morning and can walk the Abhaibhubejhr building while the sun is still mild, with enough time left to stop at Luang Pho Sothon on the way back before the temple closes at 5 p.m. Leave any later than early afternoon and you may have to cut one of the stops.

Full-day plan — morning in Prachinburi, afternoon temple, evening home

One full day

Bangkok → Prachinburi → Chachoengsao → Bangkok

07:00
Leave Bangkok, take Motorway 7Head toward Chonburi, then turn onto Highway 359 into Prachinburi, about 130 km. You can stop for restrooms at gas stations along the way; traffic is still light in the early morning.
09:00
Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr building at Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr HospitalA yellow Baroque-style building from 1909, on Prachin Anuson Road (Highway 3069), about 2.5 km from the town center. Open daily 08:30–17:00. Walk around and photograph the old architecture, then head upstairs to the Thai Traditional Medicine Museum; entry is free.
10:15
Shop genuine Abhaibhubejhr herbal products at the hospital shopThe herbal-products shop is open daily 08:30–20:30. Best-known items are inhalers, balms, skincare creams, soaps, brewing teas, and herbal toothpaste, all at fair prices. This is the source, so you'll find a fuller selection here than in Bangkok.
11:30
Walk the herb garden + a healthy lunchThe herb garden has signs listing each plant's name and properties. Inside the hospital there's a herbal restaurant and a self-serve point at roughly 35–40 THB a plate, mild and health-focused — a good fit for an herbal-themed trip.
12:45
Leave Prachinburi, take Highway 304 toward ChachoengsaoOn the way back you don't take the same road; use Highway 304 through Phanom Sarakham down to Chachoengsao, about an hour and a bit of driving. The route runs past open rice fields.
14:15
Pay respects to Luang Pho Sothon at Wat Sothon Wararam WorawihanThe revered Buddha image of Chachoengsao, enshrined in the ordination hall beside the Bang Pakong River. The temple is open 07:00–17:00. People commonly come to ask for blessings on work, finances, and health. Dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering the ordination hall.
15:15
Walk the market in front of the temple, buy Chachoengsao souvenirsAround the temple there are markets and souvenir shops with Chinese pastries, processed mango, and snacks. A good spot to pick up another round of souvenirs before heading home.
16:00
Drive back to Bangkok via Bang Na–TratFrom Chachoengsao into Bangkok via Bang Na–Trat Road, about an hour and a bit. Leaving before evening helps you dodge the late-day traffic, getting you home around early evening.

Plan for the 5 p.m. temple closing

Both the Abhaibhubejhr building (closes 17:00) and Wat Sothon (closes 17:00) shut around the same time in the evening. If you leave Bangkok late, flip the order — visit Luang Pho Sothon first in the morning, then head up to Prachinburi in the afternoon, since the herbal shop stays open until 9 p.m.

Where to buy Abhaibhubejhr herbs in Bangkok

If you don't have time to go up to Prachinburi, or want to restock after you're back in Bangkok, genuine Abhaibhubejhr herbal products do have a few outlets in the city. Can you go without a car?

This Prachinburi–Chachoengsao loop is easiest if you drive yourself, since it crosses three provinces in one day. Without a car you can still do it, but you'll have to split it across days. Take a van from Mo Chit or Ekkamai to Prachinburi for a day's herbal outing in town, out and back. As for Luang Pho Sothon in Chachoengsao, it's very easy by Eastern Line train from Hua Lamphong — get off at Chachoengsao Junction, then take a songthaew to the temple in under ten minutes. That can easily be its own day.

  • Prachinburi — vans from Mo Chit/Ekkamai to the town center, then grab a hired motorcycle or rent a scooter to Abhaibhubejhr Hospital.
  • Chachoengsao (Luang Pho Sothon) — Eastern Line train from Hua Lamphong, get off at Chachoengsao Junction, take a songthaew to the temple; doable as a one-day round trip.
  • If you have a car — combine both stops in a single day as a loop, the best use of time and fuel.
