First, it helps to understand Prachinburi's geography a little, because it shapes the whole trip. Prachinburi town (Mueang district) is home to the Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr building and the herbal medicine museum. Kaeng Hin Phoeng sits in Na Di district, bordering Khao Yai. Si Mahosot Ancient Town and the Sa Morakot site are in Si Maha Phot district, and Kabin Buri is another district that serves as a transport hub for the southern part of the province. Each spot is 30–60 kilometres from the next, with no direct public transport linking them. So if you plan to visit several places, having your own car or a rental is by far the easiest way to go.
How many ways are there to reach Prachinburi from Bangkok?
It's about 130 kilometres from Bangkok to Prachinburi town. You can get there by car, bus, minivan, or train. The main pickup point for public transport is Mo Chit 2 bus terminal in Bangkok, while trains run on the Eastern Line via Chachoengsao Junction.
Self-drive / car rental
Take Highway 304, or Motorway 7 then Route 359, and it's roughly an hour and a half to town. It's the most flexible option for hitting several districts in a single day, since the sights are far apart with no public transport linking them.
Minivan / minibus from Mo Chit 2
Air-conditioned minivans and minibuses run into Prachinburi and Kabin Buri frequently all day — some routes leave every 45 minutes. The drop-off is conveniently in the town centre, so this works well if you're travelling solo or don't drive.
Air-conditioned coach
Large buses from Mo Chit 2 are the budget pick, starting around 75 baht. They're more comfortable than a minivan but stop to pick up and drop off at several points along the way, so the journey takes a little longer.
Eastern Line train
Departs from Krung Thep Aphiwat Station (Bang Sue), passes Chachoengsao Junction, and stops at Prachinburi or Kabin Buri station. Fares are very cheap, but services are limited and some trains are slow. Good if you enjoy the ride and rice-field views from the window.
Which should you pick?
If you're only visiting one spot and staying in town, a minivan is convenient enough. But if you want to tick off Kaeng Hin Phoeng, Si Mahosot, and Abhaibhubejhr in one trip, drive yourself or rent a car — chaining together rides within the province is a hassle and costs you more time than you'd save.
Can you rent a car in Prachinburi?
Honestly, Prachinburi isn't a major tourist province, so there aren't many car-rental outlets in town — mostly local operators or airport transfer services. That's why most people rent a car back in Bangkok (Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi airport) and drive in. A sedan rental starts at around 1,000–1,500 baht a day, plus fuel. If you're staying at a hotel in town, ask them about car rental or a private driver for the day, since many have local connections.
- Rent from Bangkok — the easiest way to find a car. Pick it up at the airport or in the city and drive into Prachinburi yourself. Good for longer multi-day trips.
- Car with driver — some resorts and local tour companies offer a car hired by the day for around ฿1,800–2,500. Ideal for groups who'd rather not drive and plan to cover several districts.
- Motorbike rental — available in town and around Kabin Buri. Fine for short runs within town, but not recommended for Kaeng Hin Phoeng or Khao Yai, where the roads are long and some stretches climb into the hills.
Check before you take the car
If you rent from Bangkok, inspect the tyres, brakes, and air-con carefully — the final stretch to Kaeng Hin Phoeng is a winding mountain road that gets slippery in the rainy season, so drive slowly and take extra care.
Getting to the Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr building in town
The Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr building and the Abhaibhubejhr Thai traditional medicine museum sit within the grounds of Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital on Prachin Anuson Road, Tha Ngam subdistrict, Mueang district — less than 3 kilometres from the centre of Prachinburi town. It's the easiest of the province's main sights to reach.
- From town — take a songthaew or motorbike taxi from the market or bus terminal in town. It's a short ride, with fares in the tens of baht.
- Self-drive — there's parking on the hospital grounds, so it's easy to leave the car. Entry to the building and museum is free.
- Stop by the Abhaibhubejhr shop — there's a herbal products shop and a café in the same area, so you can walk straight over without moving the car.
Time it well
The Abhaibhubejhr building is mainly open during office hours, so come from morning to early afternoon and move on to other spots afterwards. Arrive too late and the museum section may already be closed.
Getting to Kaeng Hin Phoeng in Na Di district
Kaeng Hin Phoeng is a popular whitewater-rafting spot inside the Prachinburi side of Khao Yai National Park, in Na Di district. The rafting season is the rainy months, roughly July to October, when the river runs full and high. There's no public transport in — you'll need to drive yourself or go with a package tour run by a local resort.
- Driving route — from town, take Highway 33 (Suwannason) toward Kabin Buri and Na Di, then turn onto Route 3462/2041 heading for the Khao Yai ranger station Kor Yor 9.
- Walk the last stretch — park at the Kor Yor 9 station and walk in another 2.5 kilometres or so, about 45 minutes, to reach the rafting launch point.
- Go with a resort package — many resorts and camps around Kaeng Hin Phoeng offer rafting packages with transfers and all the gear included. It's far easier than arranging everything yourself and ideal if you'd rather not drive into the park.
What to know about the rafting
The 2.5-kilometre run has 6 rapids in a row and takes about 2 hours. You can only go with rangers or a licensed team, and you wear a life vest the whole time. Outside the rainy season the water is too low to raft, so always check water conditions with a resort before you travel.
Getting to Si Mahosot Ancient Town and Sa Morakot
Si Mahosot Ancient Town and the Sa Morakot historical site are in Si Maha Phot district, about 20 kilometres from Prachinburi town. It's a Dvaravati-era archaeological site with an ancient twin Buddha footprint and an old pond. Entry is free and it's open daily.
- Driving route — from town, take Highway 319 toward Si Maha Phot, about 20 kilometres, then follow the signs into the historical site. There's a parking area.
- No direct public transport — there are no buses that reach the site itself, so without your own car you'll need to hire a car or use a local for-hire service from town.
- Pair them up — Sa Morakot and Si Mahosot Ancient Town are close together and can be visited back to back in one go, taking about half a day in total.
Getting to Kabin Buri, the southern hub of the province
Kabin Buri is a large district in the south of Prachinburi and a transport hub that many people use as a transit point toward the Prachinburi side of Khao Yai or onward to Sa Kaeo. It has its own bus terminal and train station, making it easier to reach than the natural spots.
- Minivan/minibus from Bangkok — there are direct Mo Chit 2–Kabin Buri and Rangsit–Kabin Buri routes that run frequently, some departing every 45 minutes, taking about 3–3.5 hours.
- Train — Kabin Buri station is on the Eastern Line. You can ride straight through from Bangkok or continue from Prachinburi station. Nice scenery, but few services.
- From Prachinburi town — drive about 30 kilometres along Highway 33, or take the inter-district buses that run this route.
